View Full Version : Do Dreams Mean Anything?

I remember back when I took psych 101 and we talked many different times about dreams and how they are related to our past, subconsciousness, present state of mind, etc. Personally I think they mean something, especially when their significant and lately (for the past couple months) I have been remembering my dreams nearly every night. Last night however I had an extremely vivid dream, very real.

I was swimming in a pool, at the bottom to be exact. I couldn't rise up above the surface however to get air, as if I was being held down I was stuck at the bottom of the pool...not really even swimming but more like crawling. Just as I was about to pass out from no air I pulled myself up over the side of the pool. I woke up drenched in sweat right after. It was very surreal. First off, what does this mean!!!?? Ha, and secondly I thought this would be a cool place to post weird/significant dreams anyone else may have...also to give insight as to what dreams might actually mean.

Remember when Mountain Dew did that under the cap game during the final four where if you got a "wild card" underneath the cap you get the team basketball jersey you wanted? I bought Dew every day at school because I wanted a Juan Dixon jersey.

One night I dreamt I opened one up and the school said Arkansas Pine Bluff - a school I know I never heard of - and the next day at school, my cap was an Arkansas Pine Buff cap - does that mean I shouldve gone there for college? Haha, well the next day I got the wild cap and I got my Dixon jersey!

I think dreams are just reflections of our thoughts and our lives. I don't necessarily believe in prophetic dreams, though some people did seem to have that power. I mean, I've had dreams where a friend of mine was trying to shoot me with a pellet gun just for kicks, and when I told them that later, they said "ehh, you prolly deserved it". My dreams tend to be pretty random overall, though sometimes they are inner desires of mine (job, family, life, women, whatever).

i had a dream once where i was watching this guy fight vampires. and then this other one that had to do with zombies at some school. and another one which somehow incorperated both sonic the hedgehog and the egyptian pyramids (seriously). dreams are just images recycled by the brain to keep us from getting bored at night. sometimes theyre weird things like that, and sometimes theyre just something youve been thinking about really hard all day.

Dreams aren't prophetic, that's silly. My dreams usually include what's on my mind (job, family, life, women, whatever) + random nonesense.

I wish I had more lucid dreams though

I wish I had more lucid dreams though

I'm not so sure if I would like that.

I've had several dreams where I've been pissed off for whatever reason and have actually caught myself cursing, kicking, or punching. I woke up once with a very sore hand from punching the wall next to my bed.

And yea...the ones that stem from libido...yea...well, they're nice...but I get pissed off because I seems I always wake up ...well, you know... during the good part.

dont dismiss your dreams, its how you process your gut feelings. Especially if you dont believe in God, I think he still gives you those anyways. For the most part though, I think alot of the meaningless gut feelings come from your brain processing all the information in your life while you sleep.

I always go through stretches for like week where Ill remember my dreams every night. But they are always extremely random. Never really anything I could take as a sign. But then after that I wont remember my dreams for another month. So Ive never really taken much meaning from any of my dreams, I mostly assume its just my slightly skitzoid mind messing around with me.

On a related note: Anyone else ever dream they were someone else? I had had a dream a little while ago that I was Torry Holt. (and the dream had nothing to do with football) Tell me what the hell thats supposed to mean.

The dreams I hate the wors are the dreams that are so real that you expect them to be true when you wake up. Every once in awhile (not so much lately) I will dream that I found a $100 bill. That **** is so real, I wake up expecting to have a $100 bill waiting for me...I'll wake up in a panic because I think I lost it... I've went around my room searching for it before, because the dream was so real!!

Late congrats on 13k, jrock.

The one dream I had that pissed me off more than anything was this. I dreamt my parents bought me a 3D holographic football video game that sat in the middle of the floor. When you played it, you were controlling fully animated actual players, etc. It too was one of those that was so realistic, you just couldn't imagine you were dreaming.

When I woke up and remembered no such game existed, I was pissed.

I still question whether deja vu is the brain's one side catching up to the other...... I'm convinced I relive stuff weekly. I'm convinced I'm going to die in a plane crash as well, but I'm not afraid of planes......What was the topic of this thread again? I'm going to bed. :)

You will crash on a plane but you wont die, but will live with about 30 other people on a small island in the middle of nowhere, and will become LOST, to you, and everyone else.

Is it a dream or are you really LOST? :D

footballhenry~ My first thought about your not being able to breath, was that it was REAL. Dreams can be physical. You said you woke up drenched in sweat. It could be nothing, or it could be something else. You may have had the covers wrapped around your throat. You could have sleep apnea. Or you might have had an asthmatic attic in your sleep. Something.
Can't hurt to get it checked.

As far as dreams go, in general, I love'em. Even the nightmares. It's like getting to watch TV while sleep. I've had some doosies too. I'll have to come back later and post 1 or 3 of them.

Lucid dream:
I was at the intersection on RT 188 and RT 12 in Connecticut. It was night and I was in my old Buick Skylark. For some reason, I realized I was in a dream. One part of me said "Hey! I'm dreaming." and then there was the other part of me said "No you're not. Prove it." So I pulled into the center of the intersection, stopped and got out. I walked to the front of the car and started to walk away from it. As my back was turned to the car I said " When I turn around, my car will be gone." I stopped and turned, and the car was gone! "Wow!" I said to myself. Then I turned back around to walk down the road, but when I did I was back in Oxen Hill near our old townhouse. There were a few people on the neighbors steps, and when they saw me they acted as if they knew me. I knew who two people were, one was the first girl I kissed, Stacie. The other was boy I used to play with, Brian. Everyone else was a stranger. They asked me what I was doing there and I said I was having a lucid dream. "No way" ...most of them said. Then Stacie asked "Can you fly?" "Yes. Watch" And then I started floating up and over the crabapple tree in the yard. But as I got higher and higher, I got scared, and started saying out loud, "Wake up Wake up, Wake up..." Which his what happened. When I woke up my heart was racing a bit, but otherwise I felt pretty good. Still tired, I went back to sleep and dreamed nothing I could remember.....
This happened when I was 18. I have only had two other lucid dreams since.

I've had this recurring dream since I was maybe 3 years old, before I saw any Sci-Fi or war movies. I'm floating over this post-apocaliptic landscape, there is nobody there but me. Nothing else happens, it's just an eerie dream that I've always had.

I've also seen girlfriends cheating on me in my dreams. At some point later, they've come up to me saying she was sorry and that she cheated on me. I would then say,"I know, I saw it in my dream." One time, I knew exactly who it was with, the other time, I knew the name of the guy.

I also have your typical deja vu where I've dreamed that I've been somewhere and then a week or even years later, there I am.

I sure hope dreams don't mean anything. Cuz last night I dreamt that I crashed my Bronco into a giant pile of sand after losing control, than I had to walk 200 miles home. Than for some reason my wife decided to take a mortgage out on a Winnebago (which I don't think can be done) that Bill Parcells was selling.

Can anyone interpret this dream for me?

When the Redskins hired Norv Turner from the cowboys staff I had a nightmare that my Redskins were being poisoned with cowboys. I dreamt that Art Monk was pushed out the door (he later was) and that Norv brought cowboy players with him (Alvin Harper was later signed) and that the Redskins sank into losing ways for many many years (they did).

Ok well maybe I'm a freak but I seem to have prophetic dreams, I dreamed 9-11 and if you all remember the death at Kings Dominion a few years back, and of course Columbine...those are a few of the more important dreams.

I also swear I see glimpses of beyond this life in vivid dreams; and yes I know that sounds absolutely impossiable but I have talked to certain people who have passed away and they'd tell me to tell someone something important. And what's even crazier sometimes the families who are to be told the information I'm recieving sometimes doesn't even know the person has passed away.(Please keep in mind that I'm not insane.) I.E. I had taken a nap, and was met with a vision of my friend's father; which in itself was crazy. He told me to tell his family that he loved them and not to worry about him because he's in a better place and a few more personal things; well long story cut short...I wake up in a cold sweat and proceed to call my friend. He then proceeds to inform me he had found out that his father was just killed in an automobile accident.

Long story cut short, I am a very firm believer in dreams

Actually, you are spot on in dream recognition. Knowing a bit about what FH has gone through the past few months, this is exactly what his dream was telling him.

There are many different interpertations from dreams, and nothing is 100% foolproof, but this analysis makes complete sense. If you REALLY want to delve into dream analysis, I would suggest picking up Jung's "Modern Man in Search For a Soul". It begins with psychoanalyzing dreams and decoding their meanings. It is a GREAT book if you are into that sort of thing. I think R2R nailed it thought, great post.

To dream that you are swimming, suggests that you are exploring aspects of your unconscious mind and emotions. The dream may be a sign that you are seeking some sort of emotional support. It is a common dream image for people going through therapy.

To dream that you are swimming underwater, suggests that you are completely submerged in your own feelings. You are forcing yourself to deal with your emotional difficulties.

For me, I never remember my dreams unless I wake up too early in the morning, before my alarm goes off. If I'm able to fall back asleep and the timing is right (usually 1-2 hours) then I'll have a very vivid dream. Other than that I never recall them.

I've had it since i was little... And other dreams about fighting like i was underwater but the other is a little slower, I like those.

LOTS of sex dreams that never ever go the distance... its worse than not having them at all..

I think dreams definitely mean something, but our lives (and our dreams) are usually too complicated to figure out exactly what that meaning is, in most cases.

There certainly are different “types” of dreams, including those of somatically (responding to neurological signals of sensory input processing while asleep) prompted. I first studied Jungian, Freudian, and Gestalt dream analysis techniques early on, but these days dreams are a lesser-traveled road in research and applied psychology.

I also worked in sleep-study clinics briefly, studying problems resulting from apnea and other sleeping disorders and yes, everybody without serious brain damage has what measures as dream states whether they remember their dreams or not. Dreams seem to serve many purposes, including problem solving, venting, processing information, rehearsal, and then of course there are spiritual and existential propositions made about some dreams, too. I came to find and experience that the vast majority of people can actually begin to regularly remember their dreams after only a few weeks of specific efforts.

I later did some further intensive study including keeping a dream journal and actually being taught to develop lucid dreaming which is exceptionally fascinating, though I only achieved it a couple of times during those days. I came to fin all of this a much broader and fascinating side-area of interest than I expected with a great deal of value. One to the best books on the topic for laypeople and still very knowledgeable is Our Dreaming Mind by Robert Van De Castle, PhD, a psychologist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center. It's really a fun and insightful area of interest.

Did I say attic? I thought I said addict. :silly:

First dream I remember: Grandma took us all to the drive-in to see Mary Poppins. The cartoon they showed before the movie, was a Tweedybird cartoon. The impact that that giant yellow bird (not everybody dreams in color you know) had on me at the tender age of 4 was quite remarkable. I had Tweedybird nightmares for years. So you KNOW I was hoping Sylvester would catch and eat the little fowl ****er.

As of late, I've noticed some of my dreams being influenced by noises in the room. A week or so ago, I was dreaming I was in a room and there was a fire alarm going off. I remember moving towards the door to escape, and awoke to my alarm clock sounding off.

It seems to happen just prior to waking up. The other mornng I was dreaming I was playing paint ball war games with the sound of the guns fireing. I awoke to the sound of a nail gun being used by a roofer working on the house going up behind my place.

It's happened a bunch of times with all different noises. I've also have had some very real nasty dreams lately. The one I rember as clear as day is........

I'm at the gas pumps, and there's a guy pumping gas onto the ground. I walk towards him and yell WTF are you doing. He turns and soakes me with gas, and as I stand there shocked for a second, he throws a lit match at me. I burst into flames and then woke up.

I only remember my dreams if I wake up and specifically go through what the dream was. If someone wakes me or I speak one word before going over the dream then all is lost.

Most of the time my dreams are worse case scenarios for things that are going on in my real life. After I got a DUI I dreamed about driving drunk and either getting into accidents or being pulled over. I would wake up in a cold sweat pissed off at myself for making the bad decision and then realize it was only a dream. I've only been able to fall back asleep and continue a dream a couple times.

One thing that hasn't been in this thread is drug induced dreams. My dentist gave me vicodin after a root canal and I only took them the first night. That night I had the worst dream of my life. I was driving drunk down 95 South near Richmond swerving all over the road scared out of my mind. All of a sudden before something bad was about to happen all I saw was bright white and I thought I was awake. I kept trying to wake up but couldn't. First time I had ever had a dream inside of a dream...**** painkillers from now on I'll take the pain.

Climbed aboard the dream weaver train
Driver take away my worries of today
And leave tomorrow behind

(chorus
Ooh dream weaver
I believe you can get me through the night
Ooh dream weaver
I believe we can reach the morning light
Fly me high through the starry skies

Maybe to an astral plane
Cross the highways of fantasy
Help me to forget today's pain

(chorus again

Though the dawn may be coming soon
There still may be some time
Fly me away to the bright side of the moon
And meet me on the other side

I sure hope they don't mean anything. About a week ago, I dreamt the Redskins were losing by 4 to MN in our first game. We were on there 20 yard line, 4th down with a few seconds left. Lloyd was in the end zone standing all alone and Burnell threw him a bullet in the numbers which he juggled and dropped. I woke up right after. Now that was weird.

I have a dream that was a bit depressing and odd once that I actually enjoyed once I woke up and had time to remember/interpret it.

I was 15 or so and I was in my backyard playing on the porch area and i see my brother collapse to the ground from a gunshot wound...he was dead. I look around and I see the Joker from Batman. Old school joker. Yea, it was wierd. Even wierder, he was in my backyard in a military tank. I guess it wasn't much of a nightmare, maybe more of a hero story because Joker was in the tank with his upper body out of the top of the manhole/hatch on top. He was under the large tree in my backyard and I ended up reaching the tree and swung around a branch that was perched perfectly above him (swinging in a complete circle like a ferris wheel) and totally dropkicked the hell out of the joker. I think I decapitated him, but I don't remember if I really did or not.

I love my lucid dreams that involve sex though. Hells yeah.
