View Full Version : Tom Coughlin: What Will It Take To Get To The HOF?

I'm thinking three rings...in other words, it ain't gonna happen.
He's 5-5 in winning seasons alone.
And in light of the number of chances he's had in the playoffs, there's just no excuse for the drubbing the Giants took in their one playoff game after a bye-week last year.

Well yeah, he'd need to get fired and some how beat out GW for the job when Gibbs steps aside!

He will not get into the Hall of Fame, unless he really starts to have some extraordinary seasons and successes.
As a side note, once again, the Giants did not have a bye week before playing the Panthers in the playoffs last year. Not that it makes the loss hurt any less.

It's all about consistency......for example:
Cowher will probably make the HOF now that he won a Superbowl combined with the SB loss to Dallas and a few AFCC appearances. As long as the Steelers don't completely fall apart, he's eventually in.
Parcells also will make it b/c of his track record with the Pats and Giants (i don't count the Cowboys, being that he hasn't done that much while there).
Coughlin has gone to 1 AFCC game (correct me if I'm wrong) and a few playoff app.......
I doubt he'll make it, Reid will probably make it before him (based on their current track record).
But he's still a good coach and I feel he's done well taking over Fassel's Giants.

Did the Steelers have a bye week??? Either you have your **** together or you don't!
Coughlin in the hall? Nah, I don't think so. He would have to have one ring by now and the Giants aint going anytime soon. He's treading water.

:wtf:
Why even bring this up? Is it some sort of excuse? The giants played Saturday Dec 31st and then the following Sunday Jan 8th. Meanwhile the Skins played Sun Jan 1st and the following Saturday Jan 7th. Extra short week. In other words, the giants had two extra days of rest between games and still got blown out at HOME. So what's your point? Are you saying the giants weren't as good as the Redskins last year?

I don't think he was making an excuse, just pointing out that the Giants didn't have a bye week. Tr1 in his original post said that they did.

I don't mean to be argumentative, but I think two rings would do it for most coaches, Coughlin included.
Can anyone think of an eligible coach with two rings who isn't in?

Whoa, if you go back and read the initial post, he mentioned the Giants losing despite having a week off before the playoff game. I was merely correcting him, as I've noticed that many people seem to think that there was indeed a bye week.
I wasn't using it as an excuse at all. Calm down.
EDIT: Triptronic, I forgot to add you as a quote. Obviously my statement was mis-interpreted, hopefully it's clear now.

So that means Shanahan and Holmgren are gonna get in?
Perhaps so...

Well, Holmgren would need two rings as a head coach -- currently he only has the one. :)
Also, tr -- why would you start this thread?? I think its fairly obvious that Coughlin is not a hall-of-fame coach...but why start the thread? Its not like there are Giant trolls on here arguing that he IS or something...just doesn't seem like a worthwhile cause.
Stick to bashing the Eagles....I like that much better! :)

Apparently, tr1 has too much time on his hands. But, I don't care if he gets into the HOF, as long as he gets the Giants a SB win.

Not gonna happen with Coughlin...Gibbs, Fox & Lewis all will win SBs before Coughlin does. :2cents:

I find it difficult to criticize my fellow Redskins fans...
This thread, however, should be ignored by those who find it of little value.

Thanks for your sparkling insight...sorry about your recent visit to the Stadium...I'm sorry folks weren't more understanding of that borderline post over there...I'm sure your intentions were all good.
Anyway....
Coughlin is a coach whose technique wears thin with players as time goes on (e.g., Tiki).
It's obvious he's willing to sacrifice team unity for the egos of 'stars' (e.g., Burress, Shockey).
Norvis continually coddled his 'talent' and had no concept of 'team' dynamic...one of his biggest failures as a head coach.
It's a recipe for disaster.

No problem.
Anyway, personally I find myself questioning some of Coughlin's moves as a coach. I would think the ability to adapt your gameplan and strategies over the course of the season is key to getting to and winning the superbowl. With that said, I often wonder if Coughlin's sometimes stubborn attitude gets in the way of him becoming a greater coach.

I think most fans have questions about their coach along the way. When Gibbs stuck with Brunell for so long during the first year, I was having a hard time. Fortunately, he had the will to make a change...
Can Coughlin's 'bad-guy' image hold up if some players put him on ignore? If you ask me, it invites more malcontents.

the problem is that Coughlin is a coach whose approach wears on his players. He never will be a guy like Gibbs or Cowher that stays with one team for 14 years and finds success in that kind of stable environment.
his college rah-rah style is abrasive and while in the short run it can be effective in waking up a mediocre, complacent bunch as the Giants were under Fassel in his last 2 years in NY, in the long run players will tune him out and a number of the stars will leave in free agency.

Tom Flores never got in despite 2 SB wins with the Raiders. I think that's it.

that is it. Flores should be in. Despite his mediocre stint with Seattle following his tenure with the Raiders, he deserves to be in the Hall, I mean, come on, its Seattle....

Seifert has two rings. I don't think he'll ever get into the HOF.
Jimmy Johnson's been eligible for a few years and he's not in. Has me made the final cut yet?
Shanahan will likely get in, though I'd like to see him do something without Elway first. But that's probably just me.
I don't think Coughlin has a chance, unless he has a Belichek-like run. But stranger things have happened.

While Coughlin has a long way to go to be HOF worthy he has a pretty good foundation to build a HOF resume. He took Jacksonville to two AFC Championship games and has a good start with the Giants. If he can win a SB or two in New York he would be in in a heartbeat. Weeb Ewbank has a .500 career record and only 7 winning seasons in 20 years but his SB win with the Jets got him a bust.
Henry
July-19th-2006, 04:49 PM
Didn't Ewbank win a few pre-SB championships too? I'm pretty sure he won a couple in the 50s in addition to his SB win.

I don't see either one happening right now.
I may be wrong about the SB ring (the Gmen will have to prove that to me this year) but I don't think i'll change my mind on the HoF.

Flores will get in when Switzer gets in. He really wasn't that good. Seifert is will never get in because he followed Walsh. Than took over a bad situation in Carolina.

Coughlin's style isn't so much college "rah-rah" as it is college "hamburger drills until someone pukes or gets hurt and then we'll run".
