I was watching a Summer League game 2 nights ago and the announcers were talking about how Gilbert should be the role model for all of these 2nd round picks as far as how to succeed in the NBA. Then the other announcer said, "Don't get confused though - Gilbert Arenas is a real talent, a real athlete."
He goes on to tell a neat little story,
"In fact when I was doing the summer league in 03 when Gilbert was drafted Lute Olson, the head coach of Arizona, came to me and told me 'You know Gilbert is going to be the best player in the summer league.' I said, "Sure Gilbert is talented, but there are a lot of talented players here."
Lute Olson continued, "No you don't get it, Gilbert is going to be the best player in this summer league and he is going to be the best player in this draft. You want to know something? Remember that last game in the NCAA tournament Gilbert shot 5 for 25 in? He had a broken collarbone in that game. Gilbert didn't want anyone to know, he didn't even tell me. Gilbert is going to be the best player in this draft, trust me."
Pretty crazy that his college coach would go out on a limb like that, but obviously he knew things that we were yet to find out!
Gil is crazy - I remember that game and Gil stinking it up, I had no idea he had a broken collarbone in it though, that is hard core.
