Just wondering Im a Hearts (Heart of Midlothian) fan they play in the Scottish Premier league (2nd last year and won the Scottish Cup).

I picked the Redskins as my NFL team as like Hearts they play in thier nations capital city and in the same colour.

What about you guys who do you root for ? http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=tbn:r4zkv5r98rMgfM:www.football.co.uk/shared/images/teams/hearts.jpg

Same here. My select soccer coach back in the day played for them. So I've always followed them since I felt I had some sort of tie to them.

I don't have a team yet... I'm just starting to follow what's going on over there. It seems like Tottenham is a very popular pick ever since Simmons chose them too (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/060719). Probably an interesting article for my friends across the pond to see how a high profile american sports fan chose an EPL team. Unlike Simmons, I'm actually a huge fan of the sport, but I am just not sure who to root for right now.

If anyone has suggestions, I'd love to hear it (and why). I think I am likely leaning towards Newcastle, Aresenal, Liverpool, Tottenham or Chelsea.

I'd love to choose some of the underdog clubs (Man City, Everton, Fulham, or West Ham), but I want to at least seen some of the games of my team, so I think I've got to stick to one of the top teams whose games will actually be televised over here.

Sorry Aberdeen, that kind of strikes out the scottish teams, they don't get any play over here. I will keep my eye out for a game with the "Hearts of Midlothian", I would love to see a "skins"-like team. If they start getting some time, I would love to root for them.

LOL - yeah, of course I'm a united fan - but aberdeen was asking about European clubs...

PS - looks like Aberdeen's Hearts and DC United now have something in common... a win over Celtic this season! Congrats Aberdeen.

yeah...cause you know me....The thread is what European club do you follow. If you don't follow one...don't respond. That simple. I love DC United, been a fan and follower of them since their first season. I have autographs from about 20 different players, have hung out with Eddie Pope. I am far from being a Eurosnob. All I did was answer the thread. All you have to do is check my post history to see I am not a Eurosnob, but a soccer fan. But if you want to make blind statements with nothing to back them up, go ahead.

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm a lifelong soccer fan, but haven't really followed Euro football (mainly because I never got any premium channels that follow it). I'm going to try to follow the EPL this season, as I plan on getting FSC and GolTV soon. I've always liked Arsenal, I've seen a couple of their matches over the years on ESPN (Champions final) and Fox Sports Net (Wed. morning EPL replays), so I'm going to annoint them "my team". They actually wear a similar color to the Skins now for their home kits, and they play in the capital of England, so they have that going for them too.

And I'm a DC United fan, as well, though I admit I haven't followed the MLS much until the last 2 years or so.

And this is the best reason ever not to support a football club:

Charlton -- From a reader: "Do you like the Detroit Lions? Good, this is your team."

Close 2nd:

Sheffield United -- A reader described them like this: "Ladies and gentlemen … your 2005 Atlanta Hawks! It's gonna be ugly."

Some interesting responses I never thought Tottenham would be a popular choice. Dont know if many of you have noticed but Man Utd have loaned out Howard thier American keeper to Everton.

Well noticed BrownCL That Hearts beat Celtic yesterday that was a huge win for us we hae AEK Athens coming up in the final qualifying round of the Champions league we are the first Scottish club outside of the big 2 (celtic and Rangers) to qualify for the champions league.

I dont really have an English team either but I like the logic of sticking to colours and capital citys though so it could be either West ham or Aresnal for me this year depends if I want to see Grit or flair.

Yeah, I knew during the world cup that I was going to have to go ahead and finally get the soccer channels (Gol and FSC). I wish there was more, but it has been nice. For me it was just an extra $5, so well worth it!

Far better than the offical fa premier league site is the BBC site http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/default.stm

It gives great up to the minute news and has all the best interviewers there is also links to all the clubs and fans forums so you can ask any questions you want.

Its a good way to keep up to date and on match days it has a videprinter which flashes up every goal scored in Scotland and England.

hope its of use

Aberdeen,

You'd be surprised on the passion over here on Euro temas followed.I know in the Washington DC area the local team (DC United) has played several squads.I show them play the Spurs two years ago.

Tonight they play Real Madrid in Seattle of all places. That's like Rangers playing Unter in Greece or something.

Celtic was here a few weeks ago.The weather hurt the attendance, but the supporters were there.

Is it spread throuout all groups or is it still mainly hispanic/europeans that are in to soccer or are Americans getting in to it to ?

Thanos get a team entered in the fantasy league you know you want to !

"Americans" are getting into it as well (not just the hispanics and Euros over here). We were suprisingly interested in the World Cup this year. Interest in the sport has really been growing now for 10 years, I think all it will take is another unexpectedly good finish in the world cup, and the scene here will take off.

Americans are very finicky. We love the sports that we love and we love to win. As I see it, only two things can bring a sport from the fringe to mainstream:
1 - Winning when it counts. If we were to make it into the quarterfinals or semis (and beat one of the powerhouses on that run) the sport would take off over here.
2 - media exposure - The more exposure the sport gets, the more people will get into it. The fact that the MLS just signed a deal with ESPN is HUGE!!!! 10 years after the league got started, a network finally agreed to pay for the rights to broadcast the games. Now MLS has a partner with a vested interest in its success. ESPN will now give it air time, it will have a more prominent role on Sportscenter, the announcers will be better and the quality of production will improve... It was a huge announcement last week that most people didn't even notice, but I think it will pay great dividends for the sport.

Good to hear, If you to ask the average American in the street to name a soccer player would most prompt for Mia Ham (sp?) or do folk know of Tim Howard, Landon Donovan etc ?

NFL is well known over here but not many people could explain the rules sadly the best known teams are the dolphins (due to Floridas populartiy as a holiday destination) 49'rs and the Redskins are probably the best supported by people who have been in to the game since it first started getting media exposure over here iin the early 80's

If you were to ask the "average american" to name a "soccer player," most people would throw out Pele or Beckham. If you were to ask for an "american soccer player", I would guess maybe 50% could get Donovan or Hamm (who is retired). Interestingly enough, I think more girls than boys could name a soccer player. Hamm is a real hero to a lot of young girls over here - and lots of girls have some serious crushes on the likes of Donovan and Beckham, so they are far more familiar with the names than most guys.

Sadly, most of our best players couldn't be named or recognized because they play in the european leagues. Howard was a rising star when he was with Chicago, but I think the average fan has forgotten about him and likely thinks that he got injured or something and is just no longer on the team. The fact that he was on Man U and is now on loan to Everton, VERY few know. Guys like Reyna, McBride, Lewis, Onyewu, Cherundolo, Beasley, Berhalter, Bocanegra, Keller, Convey, and Friedel are "out of sight, out of mind" - I would say most americans don't know ANYTHING about any of those guys.

Tottenham here too. I just recently chose them as my favorite team. I've watched the EPL forever but never really had a team. I just liked the players they had. I'm a huge Davids fan. Plus I like Ghaly, Lennon, and Ekkoto's game. Plus, my friend's an Arsenal fan. Glad Mido came back.

i follow reading and man city (solely because of the american contigent). used to follow milan fan because of gullit, chelsea (hate them now because of terry's 9/11 actions and drogba) because of ruud (and it was my 'local' in london), and any team w/ kasey keller (who is a god).

but now, i tend to just support DC United, a few national teams, and watch EPL and Champs League for fun.

but i do have a soft spot for hearts (also lived in edinburgh) and dundee (because they had my all time favorite player caniggia.

Looks like your Hearts are doing well Aberdeen! Congrats.
i've continued thinking about it, and I this year it appears that Everton is actually the team that I am trying to follow the most - so I will formally claim them as my team now. They aren't one of the REALLY expensive superstar teams (Arsenal, ManU, Chelsea) but they are fun to watch and seem to have a great attitude - they seem to be the underdog that are suprising people this year.

Cahill and Neville are on my fantasy team (out of luck, I had no idea who they were at the start of the season), but I have especially enjoyed watching Cahill this year. I think he is my favorte player. Also, having Tim Howard (an American) helps me enjoy watching their games (even if he is only on loan).

Aberdeenredskin
October-16th-2006, 04:52 PM
Everton are a decent side but live in the shadow of Liverpool as they play in the same city, Cahill is an Aussie who made his name with Millwall but Everton have a proud history having had more seasons in the top flight than any other club

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everton_FC

If you want to take it to the next level they have a fan club in the US http://www.efcscna.com/

EPL - Man United - Cristiano Ronaldo & Wayne Rooney, fastest and hardest players that I have ever seen play.

La liga - Barcelona - Rhonaldino, Messi & Deco.
