Looks like Romo had some big numbers on the rookie...

SEATTLE - Kelly Jennings initially offered a routine, bland answer when asked how his first NFL game went, as if he had played 100 pro football games.

"It went all right," Jennings said late Saturday after he was part of the Seahawks' sloppy, 13-3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in their exhibition opener. "I've got some stuff I need to work on."

But his tone of voice suggested more. Then Seattle's No. 1 draft choice began sounding like the early college graduate and owner of two degrees that he is.

He also sounded like the rookie the Cowboys burned four times for 79 yards passing in the second and third quarters. Receivers repeatedly sprinted down the sidelines, stopped and then turned behind Jennings to catch intentionally underthrown balls from Dallas quarterback Tony Romo.

"I've got to work on the underthrown fade route," Jennings said, peeling off the veneer. "Instead of turning into the ball, I need to turn into the receiver and then find the ball, go through the man to get to the ball."

...

Coach Mike Holmgren said he was "disappointed" at the sloppiest exhibition opener he could remember in his eight Seattle seasons.

While I realize Parcells wanted to see what Romo could do.... but was it wise to keep him in the entire game?

1. If he is your #2 you don't want him injuried earlier either
2. Doesn't he want to see what the #3 can do? Just in case Romo gets hurt while playing entire preseason games?

IMO yes. I think Parcells thinks he might have something in Romo and wanted to get a sustained look. Sometimes you can't guage entire game management in a few series.

Clearly no, but he is only the #2 right now. I doubt any QB gets an entire game again.

2. Doesn't he want to see what the #3 can do? Just in case Romo gets hurt while playing entire preseason games?

Still 3 more preseason games to go. Henson will get his chance.

I'm sure this has been discussed ad nauseum here (sorry wasn't around much this weekend) but does anybody recall a QB playing an entire game this early in the preseason before? Just struck me as odd. Why the hell don't you put Henson in for at least a little work?

I think that Henson might be a total embarrassment to the organization...namely Jerry.

I thought it ridiculous that there was a rumor that Romo would be trade bait. After all, Henson hasn't proved that he can play the role of backup. Without Romo, the pukes would really be hurting.

It was a nice job by Romo, though.

Bill wants to see what kind of player he has in Romo, and also get him some experience. So, playing him would be the best way to do that. Theres 3 more preseason games, so I'm sure everyone will get a chance to play.

in 1992, oddly enough it was a Redskin QB, I forget who... but it was mentioned on NFL Network the other night after Romo did it

I think Kelly Jennings is a University of THE U graduate and player. That was drafted in the first round.

NO PITY FOR HIM.

Actually, I'm still kind of puzzled what Bill was doing with Romo.

Did he want the kid to fall on his face? Thus, they'd be early enough in to get a another qb during the pre-season?

Did he want Romo to excel, so he wouldn't have to really consider Henson?

I think Bill is stuck with Henson because of Jerry.

I'm just curious how it would have played out if Romo stunk.

What I thought was interesting in the game actually happened prior in the week. Parcells was asked about Dallas going to a 2 TE base set and his answer was that you have to be able to run the ball on the perimeter or teams will just stack up the middle and close off the run completely.

And when Parcells was first asked about Owens, his response was "he gives us more speed on the outside."

From watching this game I saw quite a few bootlegs more than normal and they were throwing the deep fade quite a bit. Supposedly they've been working on the deep fade a ton in practice. So apparently it looks like being more effective on the perimeter in the running and passing game is a priority for Parcells this year.

Yeah I wonder how he would have played with Glenn and Owens.

Sounds to me that Parcells wanted to play Romo so much because if you only play him for a few series, he may press things and that can cause some bad play. As far as playing the entire game, supposedly Romo got a little bit tired at the end of the game since he hasn't played a full game in years.

I've never bought into Jerry sticking Parcells with Henson. Parcells scouted him and talked extensively with Henson's former college coaches and for the most part, Parcells is the guy with the final word on personnel. Henson just hasn't worked out as planned. Can't roll 6's all of the time.

Maybe that's what it took to convince Jones that he has someone worthy of confidence there and another vet is not needed.

Why does everyone think that either Romo gets played the entire game or he only gets played a "few series"??...Um, he could play the entire half...or he could play for the first three quarters...there's no logic in saying he HAD to be played the entire game in order for Parcells to get a good look at him.
