View Full Version : Art Monk Should NOT be in the Hall-Of-Fame

Greetings,
For my first post ever on extremeskins.com I wanted to talk about Art Monk and why he should NOT be in the hall of fame.
It is this perception - perceived dominance over a period of time - that certainly adjusts people’s radar about a player. Swann versus Monk comes to mind here - because while I LOVE Art Monk, in his prime Swann seemed to make the big catch at will and was raised to a level of stardom that his stats don’t reflect (rightly or wrongly).
There is a huge list of these types of guys. Perception is a valuable asset for a wanna-be HOFer in the NFL.
Swann’s had flash on that one touchdown scored in XIII he didn’t even need to go down! His catch in X was incredible. However, Monk, no flash 3 rings, but no big highlights on biggest stage. Art Monk was a steady WR, not a star.

So, long story short, Monk deserves the HOF in the most ridiculous way..ask anyone who actually played and coached against him.

I think the argument, begins and ends with DjTj's blog: http://artmonk.wordpress.com/
And really, you think this first post on a rival's board with your username isn't (close to or in fact) trolling?
And you really haven't refuted any of the real reasons why Art should (or shouldn't) be in the HOF.
Statistics are great--but they don't fully reflect Art Monk.
I'd try a little harder if you want to ingratiate or dare I say, convince people on this Board.

I don't think that someone should be denied enshrinement into the Hall of Fame because of things off the field unless its very serious. I think that with some of the really serious allegations about Michael Irvin he has quite a bit that he should answer to.
Maybe the other selectors don't like Dan Snyder and they think that keeping Monk out of the Hall of Fame would be a way of sticking it to him. I don't know the situation but its a theory that I have. Its interesting though given that Art Monk never played for the Redskins while Snyder owned the team.

Let us not get worked up by these backwoods retard rejects from Texas who want to come in here and shat on some of our greatest players of all time. As for Art Monk, he absolutely deserves the Hall of Fame...he was a leader, he could always be counted on. Before Jerry Rice started dominating the scene, Art Monk was getting alot of the props. Look up the receivers who are in the Hall of Fame...alot of great ones, but Art Monk absolutely deserves to be in there with all of those gentlemen. Monk may not be the best ever, but he undoubtedly is one of the best. I love stats and here are the ones that matter most...Postseason record with Monk is 10 wins, 5 losses. Super Bowl Championships with Monk....3!!!!!!!!! 3 rings in 9 years!!!

Okay, let's look at the other WRs in the HOF from the modern era.
Charlie Joiner -- Never led the NFL in receptions, receiving yards or TDs.
Steve Largent -- Never led the NFL in receptions, or TDs. Led in yards twice.
Lynn Swann -- Never led the NFL in receptions or yards, tied for lead in TDs once.
John Stallworth -- Never led the NFL in receptions, yards or TDs
James Lofton -- Never led the NFL in receptions, yards or TDs
Fred Biletnikoff -- Never led the NFL in yards or TDs, led in receptions once.
Raymond Berry -- Never led the NFL in TDs, led in receptions and yards once, both the same year.
Don Maynard -- Never led the NFL in receptions, led in yards once and tied for NFL lead in TDs once
Tommy McDonald -- Never led the NFL in receptions, led in receptions and yards once, both the same year.
Charley Taylor -- Never led the NFL in yards or TDs, led in receptions twice
Paul Warfield -- Never led the NFL in receptions or yards, led in TDs twice
Lance Alworth -- Never led the NFL in receptions, yards or TDs. Led the AFL multiple times however.
Bobby Mitchell -- Led in receptions once, yards twice and tied for TDs once.
These are all the receivers in the HOF in the modern era. All of them!!! Looks like Art Monk stacks up fairly well to me.

Let's attack this "good argument" of yours. Initially, you say that Monk doesn't deserve to be in Canton because he only led the league in receptions once, and never led it in receiving yards or in receiving TDs.
OK, Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, and Charlie Joiner are in the Hall of Fame. This cannot be disputed. How many times did John Stallworth lead the league in receptions, receiving yards, or receiving TDs? Answer: zero. How many times did Charlie Joiner lead the league in receptions, receiving yards, or receiving TDs? Answer: zero. How many times did Lynn Swann lead the league in receptions, receiving yards, or receiving TDs? Answer: Once (TDs in 1976).
So, COMBINED, those three Hall of Famers lead the league in receptions, receiving yards, or receiving TDs a grand total of once. Monk matched that by himself. In fact, Monk has more catches than Swann and Stallworth COMBINED.
That completely debunks your argument right there, and I didn't even have to call you a troll to do it.

It's not our resposibility to answer every so called attempt at discussion, in this case trolling. However, it is YOUR responsibility to use the search feature. If you did that you could find 50,000 different views on the Art Monk HOF topic.

Great next you are going to rationalize that Michael Irvin should be in the HOF ... I think the numbers that you posted speak for themselves. There is something to be said for consistency. In a time where the running game was all important, I think those numbers are outstanding. Art Monk is and was a class act. I think the HOF needs Art Monk more than he needs the HOF.

Monk went over the middle, blocked, didn't come out of the game, and did all of the things that don't necessarily show up on stat sheets. And he did his job with quiet professionalism and dignity. Irvin, on the other hand, was a loudmouth crackhead.

You've finally joined Extremeskins.
How's about you take a minute to read all the other 10,000 post on the site about Art Monk?
"How do I do that?" you ask?
Well, there's this handy feature at the top of the page called "Search"
Type in "Monk" and "Fat ass" and everything related to you and Art will pop right up

Hard to make an argument when your first two categories include Monk in the top ten of all time
That's like saying someone isn't gay, yet they wear pink flip flops, sport a fanny pack, drink Zima, and their favorite team of all time wears silver and blue....wait....that someone is YOU
Nice post pal!
I suppose you could make a case why Irvin should get in though right? He'll never get in. Apparently the only other person that smokes more crack than #88 is you and Peter King. Enjoyed your read, have fun here at ES.

found this little piece on wikipedia on some of the people who support Monk for the Hall of Fame..."Monk also has numerous supporters in the media including Washington Post sportswriter and ESPN personality Michael Wilbon [1], his former coach Joe Gibbs [2], Sirius NFL Radio Host and former New York Jets Director of Player Development Pat Kirwan [citation needed], Indianapolis Colts President Bill Polian [3], and current Dallas Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells [4]. One factor Kings cites is that Monk only made the Pro Bowl 3 times in 16 seasons.[5] On June 6, 2006, King announced that he was going to consult with Joe Gibbs, re-think his position on Monk, and consider voting in favor of enshrining him into the Hall of Fame.[6]"

First off Roy doesn't rock he horse collar tackles. Secondly Moss rocked Roy not once but twice, IN THE SAME GAME!! :dallasuck Secondly based upon your logic, you have to be tops in all to get into the HOF? Art didn't have to be tops in this, remember we had PLENTY of other talant, Gary Clark, Clint Didier, Don Warren just to name a few. Art was CONSISTENT and never complained nor seeked to be the #1 reciever. Let's not even bring into the equation our running attack with Riggins, Byner, that Art was able to still have his numbers high in all the catagory's you mention is alone reason to be enshrined. Why is Fred Bilintnikoff in the HOF, he never was top in recieving either. Instead of worrying about Art, worry about your new problem child TO and how much of a problem he will be for you and worry about how many times your boy Roy will get smoked like a fine Cuban Cigar! Remember Man Tit Parcell's even admitted he is 1 biscuit away from a Line Backer, yeah he hits hard, however you can't hit what you can't catch! :2cents:

Greetings,
For my first post ever on extremeskins.com I wanted to talk about Art Monk and why he should NOT be in the hall of fame.
While I like your breakdown here, can you answer me this. Monk is on all of those lists. Irving is not. Irving is being considered a shoe-in for the HOF. Monk is not. Can you please explain your educated theory to me now?

some highlight quotes...
Ronnie Lott, HOF inductee
"Art Monk was an example for Jerry Rice. That's what Jerry always told me."
"There's nothing negative to say. He has the numbers, the catches, the championships." "You have a Hall of Fame for all it represents. I know he represents all that it's about. Integrity, love and passion for the game, community, what he gave back. Look how he conducted himself. Nobody I know deserves it more."
Bill Parcells, 1995
"Monk is headed to Canton downhill on roller skates"
"THE" Joe Gibbs, HOF inductee
"I can't see how a receiver could be more valuable to a team."

Evreyone here thinks Art Monk should make the Hall of Fame, easily. Art was a class act. He made more clutch and drive saving catches than most wideouts that ever played the game, that deserves the Hall. He is best remembered by his calm demeanor and lack of arrogance, something lost on most present day players. He tossed the ball to the Ref when he scored, he did not try to draw attention to himself. Art was a class act, and he has the numbers to back it up. If you don't see that, imagine if Art had been a Cowboy, now your seeing it. :point2sky

Here is a fact for ya Roy boy (Or should I call you Santana's Ho?)
You said Monk never showed up on the big stage in the Superbowl huh?
You must be 16 years old or something.....Why you might ask?
Cuz Monk had a 7 catch 113 yard day against the Bills in superbowl in 91.
I guess that is not big enough. He would have scored if I can remember, but they called his touchdown back on a penalty.
Against the Broncos he didnt have to have a big day cuz RICKY SANDERS HAD A SUPERBOWL RECORD DAY along with Timmy Smith!!! (9 catches 193 yards and 2 TD's before Jerry Rice broke it with 11 catches for 215)

Greetings,
For my first post ever on extremeskins.com I wanted to talk about Art Monk and why he should NOT be in the hall of fame.
I think most peoples' point to you here is that this argument has been debated for years here and there's really no reason to post the debate against a post who is so obviously pro-Peter King's side of the story.
Stats are only part of the story. Art Monk was a team leader. People threw away from him. People put their best corners on him. He was a leader on and off the field. Stats are only numbers and aren't the only criteria for the Hall of Fame.
But his numbers, in HIS day, were some of the best. He shouldn't be judged against more recent players who play in more west-coast type offenses.
"nuff said.

You are making a case FOR Art Monk with your stats. 5th all time in receptions. Don't forget he broke that record that was once held by Hall Of Famer Steve Largent. 9th all time in yards receiving. Why does this not qualify Art as a Hall Of Famer???
Your opinion is your opinion, but is my opinion that you started this thread because you are a Cowboy fan. Redskins fans are smarter than Cowboy fans. Not only do we know that Art Monk BELONGS in the Hall Of Fame, most Redskins fans believe that Michael Irvin deserves a spot as well. His numbers bear that out.

Greetings,
For my first stupid reasoning ever on extremeskins.com I wanted to talk about Art Monk and why he should NOT be in the hall of fame.
You have every right for us to  at you.
It is this perception - perceived dominance over a period of time - that certainly adjusts people’s radar about a player.
Like Michael Irvin? Oh wait a minute... he's only shown once on your copy/paste list and he's below ART on that one. Doesn't matter though, because my perception perceives him to go in also. Oh, sorry again, your radar is blipping on Swann...
Swann versus Monk comes to mind here - because while I LOVE Art Monk, in his prime Swann seemed to make the big catch at will and was raised to a level of stardom that his stats don’t reflect (rightly or wrongly).
So your point is Monk should NOT be in because Swann IS? They BOTH are deserving. Get a clue. Better yet, watch football sometime.
We're talking busts here... not stars on Cantons walk of fame.

Excellent job with the stats. But a problem with your point is Art was a great receiver and a role player. Largent had some better stats (and in the HOF) but how did he do with his Super Bowls highlights?
Swann had lessor stats and made it to the Hall of fame with many of his teammates and coach. They won 4 superbowls, the Redsikins went to 4 won 3, how many Redskins players are in the HOF from those years (1)? Monk belongs in the HOF period:doh:

Also in his prime, he had the other great receivers there turning big numbers too, none of the other guys on the lists of leaders had that going on and still turned huge numbers. He was a team player to the hilt. He turned big numbers in every game, and when it counted. He also acted with class and was an example of a human being to emulate. He was the leader of argueably the best threesome of receivers to ever play the game together. He also had Riggins there just beating the literal sh** out of the other team and hogging the ball. Hence the name Hawgs. hehe.

Sorry if this has already been brought up, but I only see Michael Irvin's name on that list once, and the one time he is BEHIND Monk. So I guess Michael Irvin doesn't belong in the HOF either.

What are you like 19 or something?
I don't think you ever watched the Redskins play a single game that monk played in. What do you know about Art Monk that isn't on paper?

Not even a good attempt at trolling.
Monk, even years after he has retired, during this pass happy era, and having had to contend with 2 other great pass catchers, is 9th in yards all time, and 5th in receptions.
So unless you want to make the case that only 7 WRs in NFL history should be in the hall of fame, you kind of killed your own point.
