View Full Version : Whats The Deal With The Fans and Al Saunders

Why were there so many empty seats at todays game, if the game was sold out? The attendance bordered on pathetic.
Also, why has Al Saunders taken away what works for us...namely the power running game and smash mouth football. When we did run the ball we were pretty successful, especially with Sellers.
Saunders and Bugel are overrated IMO.

ditto. It's weird because the moments look so good, but everything is isolated. I would look to see more consistency though.

Perhaps they should consider making preseason tickets available to the general public instead of part of the season ticket package. If 47,000 of the unwashed masses show up for a scrimmage, they would most definitely have a better, more enthusiastic turnout for the actual preseason games.

I am a little worried that the fifty gut type plays the first two weeks have been consistently getting two yards. That speaks to man on man blocking as well as the rbs. The first teamers aren't providing push and the runnng backs aren't pounding the pile or finding holes.

Larry Johnson for KC last year was in Al Saunders Offense and SMASHMOUTHED his way to 1,750 yards or what Preist Holmes was doing before him.

How can you even question Saunders ability to run an offense considering his track record. Unbelievable.

it's preseason....I seriously get a laugh out of coaches like Mangini and Lewis, who pull every gadget play out of thier book, and try to make the Skins look bad....we all know by this point that Gibbs has a "vanilla" gameplan scheme going in the pre-season...this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone....the number of people who are up in arms over how we are playing so far during the preseason is shocking....where have you all been during the Gibbs regime? At this point, 1st team is trying to make it to 9/11 injury free, that is why you see guys tip-toing around pile-up, trying no to get a knee or ankle twisted....guys on the 2nd team are playing a little harder, trying to win that roster spot that is so coveted....don't worry guys, we will be alright...

Get a friggen grip please maybe we should open up the whole playbook so we can win meaningless games in fact did you notice all our starters were out of the game early?Playing our starters all game is something we should not get away from, it always brought us success just what is Saunders thinking of and why does Gibbs let him get away with it? Oh yea I know its preseason and were trying to evaluate talent.

Yet again, Riggo overreacts and opens up a thread as a result. Yet again, he gets pummled in response. Haven't learned yet have you? You must have a strong streak of narcissism or something in you. As has been stated, way too many times in just 2 preseason game, this is all vanilla stuff you're seeing. Al Saunders said it himself, ( and the guys during pregame even quoted him), this is what you're going to see. Time and again learned members have stated that this is a time when coaches are evaluating individual players, (so that they can figure out all that cutting and stuff). Saunders comes in as one of the top offensive minds in the league with the credentials, ( and stats), to show for it. Buges is top notch. Just watch the line from 2003 and now. Overrated? Hardly.

That's funny, because last preseason the offense was throwing the ball downfield like crazy...yet during the regular season the Skins offense was "power running and smash mouth football". So what that should tell you is that what this team does on offense during the preseason is most definitely NOT a harbinger of what it will be doing when it comes time to actually gameplan for an opponent. They use this time to work on certain elements that they want to test out in "live" games...little more.

I'm with Riggo but I'll take it a step further.
Razor wire around Redskin Park with armed guards around the dorms to keep the players there.
No more two a days. Four a days!!!
Maybe Snyder can cut a deal with one of the ephedra-diet pills like Xenadrine or Hydroxy cut and get Gibbs and the coaching staff hooked on them so they can work around the clock gameplanning.....No wait!! Get the players hooked on them too!!
Around the clock practices for all!!! We need the extra work to be sharp!!
It's time to buckle down. We need to win every practice, scrimmage, preseason game..everything!! We need wind sprints at the end of practice and if Moss doesn't win everyone of them..well...CUT HIM!! Send a message to the rest of the team: No losing,no matter what the contest, should be tolerated!!
Miss a tackle? Lose a finger. Lost all your fingers on one hand? Your off the team!!
Same with John Hall and the punters. Miss a kick? Lose a toe. Lost all your toes? That's right..OFF THE TEAM!!
We have to send a message to the team that if your lose, it brings serious consequences.
Now...Carry on......................:)

Riggo,
Did you ever stop to think that maybe Al Saunders and Joe Gibbs aren't scheming to win the games? I believe they've even stated that they go into each game planning to work on certain things. I believe (considering our running game was our strength last season) that they are attempting to work on our passing offense during these games. That's why you see Brunell dropping back to pass so often in the first quarter of these games.
Don't worry, we'll run the ball when we're actually trying to have a realistic gameplan.

I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say that was sarcasm, Diesel. As far as RR  , he's not taking away our power running game. It's just that the passing game is where we need to get the timing down and we need to see what Campbell and these new recievers have. We already know what our line and RBs can do and how they work.

Probably you thought that Spurrier was a very good coach when the Redskins won that preseason game against the 49ers in Japan and kept wining preseason games just to have one terrible season ones the regular season started, "o yea the ol'ball coach is gonna be great" on preseason games. is that what you o would prefer???

the answer to the question 'what's the deal?' is easy:
fickle Skins fans are unhappy Brunell, Moss, Lloyd and ARE haven't been able to exit their first quarter stints in the preseason having the team comfortably ahead 24-0 each week :D
we have very high standards for the preseason. after all under Spurrier we used to win these preseason games very easily using our starters for 3 or 4 quarters

It's preseason. It's a vanilla offense. The team is spending training camp getting ready for the Vikings. Gibbs is mad. He's in regular season form already. Good.

If we have all 5 of our starting linemen returning you'd think the line would be even better this year then it was last year.
If Portis can't get 100 yards against every team in the division this year like he did last year during our winning streak, it means the line has regressed and we should look for a new line coach.

I've been a Skins fan for about 20 years thank you. When Jansen is getting owned by a no name defensive end then there is reason for concern. When Betts can't get more then 2 yards on a carry theres reason for serious concern. When the defense blitzes and isn't prepared for trick plays theres a reason for concern. When our special teams absolutely stink up the joint there is reason for concern.

PRESEASON...enough said. I can't believe that people are really that down after a preseason loss. The team only won one game last year and people act like we are eliminated from the playoffs without the season starting. I wouldn't be surprised if we see the redskins come out bombing like the did in 91 against the lions and win a by a mile. People need to settle down. Football has been away for a while, but fans out there need to just settle down and take it down a thousand. If the team is starts the regular season terribly, then we need to worry. The coaches will handle whatever it is they need to, that is why they are paid the big bucks.

With the way that the game was structured, it doesn't seem fair to be so critical of the team. I agree the long yardage play was bad, but come on, when the team is solidified, then we will see the intensity and focus you know joe gibbs redskins teams have had in the past.

All Skins games are sold-out. Preseason games are part of season ticket packages. Landover isnt the easiest place to get to, and some of the less rabid fans arent to fired up about seeing our backups run a vanilla gameplan against the freaking Jets. (On the metro in, my buddies and I tried to name the core players the Jets can build around. We were stumped after 2  )
Thankfully, my boss didnt want to go, so i got his seats. 10 yard line, 6 rows from the field. :)

All he said at the press conference was that he was out head-coached and that he was embarrassed at how the team performed at home.
Is he going to correct the mistake and make the players regret playing the way they did on Saturday? That's the question.
