Gibbs' Press Conference - Sunday 8/20/06

by John Pappas

Ashburn, VA. - Don’t tell Joe Gibbs it is only the preseason.

After last night’s second poor outing by his Washington Redskins this preseason Gibbs was visibly upset, describing himself as “very concerned” with the overall progress of the team. Today’s assessment was not much better. “Just overall for us it was disappointing for sure. We’re a long ways off and we got a lot of work to do,” said Gibbs during his press conference in Ashburn Sunday.

In summarizing the game Gibbs was critical of all phases of the team, “Special teams, offense, defense have a long ways to go.” Despite the stiff criticism Gibbs did speak to some positives. “Were there some things we did well, some individual things we did well? Yes,” Gibbs said.

Gibbs was particular critical of the Special Team play citing three penalties that cost the team 50 yards in field position and performances on return coverage by some individuals as “disappointing.” On the positive side Gibbs praised Derrick Frost for his kickoffs and punting.

Gibbs was less critical of the defense, citing a low 2.9 yard pass average, four forced fumbles, and an overall average of 4.4 yards per play allowed against the Jets. “Our defense has gone in, in tough situations and played good,” he said. Additionally Gibbs pointed out that the starting defense knocked the Jets out of field goal range twice. On the negative side Gibbs said the team gave up three big runs and 216 yards rushing. Additionally Gibbs pointed to penalties as a major contributor to the 11:58, 25-play Jets drive in the third quarter. Of the five third down conversions by the Jets, three were a result of penalties.

Offensively Gibbs referenced the three turnovers and a poor 3-for-11 third down conversion rate as reasons for the poor performance. On the positive side, Gibbs pointed out a 3-for-3 conversion rate on short yardage plays and 100% goal line effectiveness. “We had a good two-minute situation and pass protection,” Gibbs said. Gibbs also said that the rushing game improved. When asked for specific reasons for the poor showing offensively Gibbs pointed to turnovers as the main culprit. Gibbs expressed frustration with the offense’s lack of improvement saying, “You’d like to explain things, work on things, and coach things and show improvement the next week. We didn’t do that.”

Summarizing the game, Gibbs said, “We wanted to play good at home, we didn’t. We’ve had two weeks where we just flat lose ballgames because other people played better than we did. The only way I know to fix that is to come back and go to work.”

Does anyone know what a "grade one anckle sprain" is? Is it serious?

I think it goes form 1-3 with three being the worse. so while I believe 1 is the least severe, I dont know exactly how bad it is.

Head Coach Joe Gibbs

On last night’s game in general:

"I think as we reviewed this I’ll take it by segments. Overall for us it was disappointing and we’re a long ways off but we are all together on it. All three phases, special teams, offense and defense, we’re all in it together and we’re all disappointed. On special teams we had a poor showing and had three penalties which cost us about 50-yards in field position. On kickoff coverage we were really disappointed in some people there. With Derrek and punting he had a big role there and I think his kickoffs were pretty good. That’s one of the things we were looking at, punting and kickoffs.

Defensively we had some pluses there, no explosive plays and we held them to 2.9 per pass play. We had an 80% sudden-change which is really good. On the first two drives we did a really good job on knocking them out of field goal range and we caused four fumbles. Like the early part of last year, we’re causing the fumbles but we’re not recovering them. We had 4.4 yards per play allowed and we have only given up two touchdowns after our turnovers. Our defense has gone in on tough situations and played pretty good. On the negative side, we gave up three big runs and we gave up 216 yards rushing and had no takeaways. We need to better on third down.

Offensively what you would like to do is explain things, coach things and work on things and then get better from the next game. We didn’t do that. We turned the ball over three times again on two interceptions and a fumble there’s a reason for those things happening. The fumble to be truthful, guys were laying flat on the ground. We think that should have been overturned but we couldn’t get instant replay on that so there’s part of the game. But you still can’t let the ball out of your hands no matter what. We had three turnovers again and our third downs were 3-for-11 which is very poor. Rushing picked up some with our average and short yardage was 3-for-3. Our penalties on offense have been good and we are 100% on goal-line situations. Four different times we are behind the 18-yard line and we brought it out of there and had a first-down and our two-minute was good as well as our pass protection.

Capsulizing the whole thing for us is this, we wanted to play good at home – we didn’t. We’ve had two weeks in a row where we just flat lose ballgames because we get outplayed. We have a long ways to go. It’s a sobering fact for all of us here. The only way I know to fix it is to come back and go to work. We have two more weeks and two more games before the regular season. This has us all concerned."

On the players development in the offense: "Offensively you have to have everything working together. It may be one guy there or one guy here but you have to have it all together. We stepped up in some areas but one of the biggest things is turning the ball over. If you turn the ball over three times, you’re less than ten percent as far as winning the football game. It’s that one category if nothing else. When your defense doesn’t get it you turn it over on offense, there’s not much chance for you to win the ballgame. We may look at the time the groups are playing maybe to get them in longer to get a groove. But I don’t think it is scheming or ‘getting it’ it’s just playing it and making plays."

On his mood after last night’s game:

"I don’t like how we talk and work all week and I thought we would get a great effort and play well at home and we play a game like that. It does a number of things to you. You get upset and concerned about it because there is no reason to play like that in front of our home crowd. If there is good news out of this it is that we are all together, all three parts. Maybe there is something I can do for everybody to get better."

On the team’s play despite the high expectations:

"To me, we’re starting over every year. Do I think we have a good football team? Yes. Did I talk early in the year about expectations? For me, that past does not get us anything; we have an extremely tough division and schedule. You have to earn it every year. I felt we had a great off-season and I have a really good feeling about our leadership and everything there. Certainly I think this is a team with excellent leadership so it concerns you when you play two games like that."
On Cornelius Griffin:

"I didn’t see the play it occurred on. We hadn’t gone through that portion. But I think that he will be fine and it’s just a sprain. From an injury standpoint we don’t have any major concerns coming out of the game."

On John Hall’s preseason due to the offense production:

"We would definitely like to score a bunch of points and get John work but we’re not. He’s been around for while and is a real seasoned veteran. We’ve gotten him a lot of work in practice. We’d like to put ourselves in position to kick field goals and score points."
On the punting game:

"Derek punted extremely well last week. But I don’t think any of us are where we want to be right now. Derek is very dedicated he’s actually in here watching film right now as a matter of fact. So we will continue to work on that."

On kickoffs:

"We want good hang time and good distance. Then you look at with the wind or against it, all those things play into it. It’s our first chance to have him (Frost) do both so we’re looking at that."

On the quarterbacks play in the preseason:

"Mark hasn’t played much, I think 13 plays in each game. For all of our guys there have been some things we like and some things we’d like to get back. We know what we have at quarterback. Collins will go second this week."
