I have missed you guys. I've been stuck on a roof of an abandoned Iraqi school for the last 60 hours, observing um stuff. Breaking all sorts of protocol, I radio to the rear to see if someone could give me the Eagles Cowboys score. They come back an hour later and tell me its 24-24 in the fourth quarter. I am dieing inside, trying to keep my mind right. I radio back an hour later and someone chews my ass for asking for such a thing. Since Sunday, my mind has wandered about how that goddamn game wound up. I just found out about 2 hours ago.
Having 2 hours to read as many articles as possible online and even peruse the gamethread on ES, it's time we just admit the obvious boys.
-The Philadelphia Eagles have the best offense in football because they have the best QB in football. All offseason, when Eagle fans said McNabb dominated the East with average WRs, we were mocked and told how it's all different now. Looks like more of the same to me.
-The WRs are very good. I'd take Stallworth, Brown, and Baskett over any WR trio in the NFC East. Pssst, Baskett has as many receiving yards as ARE and LLoyd COMBINED. Not bad for an undrafted rookie.
-23 sacks, 21 from the defensive line through 5 games. Seriously, who was that guy who said YOU CAN'T BLOCK THE EAGLE'S DEFENSIVE LINE?!!?!?!?
-TO can't run past CBs anymore. He is above average at WR, but nothing else. I said this in the preseason.
-I've read some other threads and have seen the delay game has begun in full force. tr1 keeps repeating how he had the Eagles at 7-1 after 8 games, trying to write off anything that happens through week 8. If ANYONE can find me one instance of tr1 predicting the Eagles at 7-1 BEFORE THE SEASON, I'll wear a signature of your choice for a month. Don't waste your time, there is no such quote. Revisionist history at it's finest.
-Is the Eagles schedule REALLY that tough over the second half? This is the last saving grace for NFC East fans, right? This ridiculously hard, mythical schedule which will slay the Eagles!!! Maybe its me, but Dallas, NY, and the Skins don't scare me much; even on the road. I guess we'll wait and see. I'm sure we will move from the schedule talk to appointing teams that Eagles surely have no chance against. I've seen that one thrown around already. Tick, tick, tick....
-Eagles lead the league in rushing TDs....but they can't run the ball.
-Last week, McNabb was just above average, and it was the level of competition that was making the Eagles look good. Now the Eagles smack around a top 5 defense (a team the Skins dropped a 3 spot against) and um, I don't know; do we have anything ready now besides "It's only week 5!"?
-Bubba is sure going to have to start throwing away a lot of big plays if he wants to keep winning arguments regarding the Eagles offense. We'll count all the plays that count....unless they were long tds.
-dock gets so pissed when talking about the Eagles. Sometimes I think he wants Westbrook to get hurt so he can say I told you so and "Screw the Eagles FO".
Thanks for your time, I'll be around for the next day or so.

Maybe we should just cancel the season and all hail the Eagles as SB champs. It will be different when the Beagles play 3 consecutive conference games on the road later this year. Besides the Eagles are no different from any other team , one or two key injuries away from mediocrity.

That's kind of funny since you have played two of those teams at home and are 1-1 in those games. In the other one Dallas had a 1st and goal to tie the game with less than a minute to go. The other 3 wins were against teams that combined for 10 wins total last year.
The Eagles have been favored in all 5 games and have won 4. None of those 5 teams have a winning record. They have given up 24 points or more in 3 of the 5 games. The Eagles have done exactly what they were expected to do.....except they lost to the Giants.
If you look at the schedule like a golf scorecard the Eagles are sitting at 1 over par with the Giants game being a bogey. Here are the division standings based on this system:
Giants -1 (Eagles win a birdie, underdogs in Indy & Seattle games and favored in Skins)
Cowboys E (Favored in Skins and Titans, underdogs Eagles & Jags)
Eagles +1 (Favored in all games, lost to Giants)
Skins +1 (Favored against Texans, home against Jags, lost on the road to Dallas, Giants, bogey for home loss to Vikings.
So in effect, there are two games so far this season that didn't go according to plan. The Giants-Eagles and Skins-Vikings games. Win a division game on the road and you can start to brag.

Let me see if I can re-phrase a little.
The Eagles, so far, are the only team in the East that hasn't played a division road game. They are also the only team in the East to lose a division home game.
Seeing as every team plays three division games at home and three on the road eventually, the win-loss records are a little skewed at this point, but they should even out by the end of the season.
But at least you beat the Cowboys, so I'm good. :)

Yep. I don't see anyway anyone other than Chicago gets homefield in the playoffs. They are going to be a tough team to beat. It will be interesting to see how Rex does in a playoff game though.

Basically, I consider the Giants game a game the Eagles should have won. They didn't and there is nothing that can be done about it now. The way I look at it, the more wins the Eagles rack up during this "easy" part of the schedule, the less likely they'll falter in what appears to be the "hard" part. I didn't say that. You guys have had a cake schedule so far, and it's to your credit that you've come out of it 4-1. Unfortunately (for you) that 1 was a home game against the Giants. You'll probably have to make that up somewhere. The last six weeks of the season will give you ample opportunity to do that.
The Redskins are in a similar situation. We've lost a game we shouldn't have (Minnesota at home.) Add to that the fact that we are simply rolling over against the division opponents and ours looks like a far more uphill battle than yours.
The team I'd look out for if I were you is the Giants. Theire losses were against tough opponents (Indy at home and Seattle on the road) and both of their wins are division wins. They are only a game behind you in the loss column and have more cake games ahead of them than you do. Plus you still have to play them in New York.
Dallas isn't going anywhere until they replace Bledsoe. That's just my opinion.

That's cool. I'd be happy if I were you too. :)
I'm just thinking back to last year, when we were 7-6 and the Cowboys were 8-5. Now, 8-5 is better then 7-6, but they had to come play us in our house to maintain their lead over us, because we stole the game in Dallas earlier in the year.
So even though they had a better record we were in better shape.
The same may be true for your Eagles this year. Honestly, it's too early to say. But then again I wouldn't be gloating too much just yet if I were you, which is of course the entire purpose of this thread.
Just sayin.

Does that factor in the games already played this season? Because the Giants opponents to this point were 42-22 last year, compared to the Eagles opponents at 28-52.
That is, if you consider 2005 records valid anymore.

I do not believe that the second half is as hard as has been said all along though. As I've said, playing three division games on the road doesn't scare me as it does some. I feel we can come out at 2-1 from there and be just fine. And if the Eagles keep doing what they doing, we're not going to have to worry about the division standings so much because they should come out at least 1 game ahead on the overall record.

The Eagles rushing offense is 11th right now, which is really good considering they're only 21st in attempts. So far they have shown they can run the ball effectively, even if it's just effective enough to take some pressure off McNabb.

I am awake and refreshed from a good nights sleep. Where do we begin???
-I'm just glad we are to the point where we all have to think of reasons to excuse the Eagles dominant play, thus far. During the offseason, even suggesting that the Eagles would be smacking everyone around was grounds for being banned.
-How I miss the offseason. We had day after day of threads dissecting the offseason moves of each NFC East team. Remember when we all had a good laugh about how cheap the Eagles FO was while Snyder was signing the AREs, Lloyds, AAs and Carters of the world? Howard and Stallworth. Next year, when the Skins sign every has been, never been, big name FA, I am going to respond with simply Howard and Stallworth. Drafting well and adding a key piece here or there is the best way to build a team.......reading the Stadium today, I think a lot of Skins fans are starting to agree.
-Lito Sheppard surprised me. I personally thought he stunk for the last two years. He has a big play capability no one on the Eagles does. He defended SEVEN PASSES Sunday.
-On the schedule....if the Eagles start out 7-1 like tr1 keeps insisting.....they could go 4-4 over the second half and win the East. That is the worst case scenario. I still think they go 6-2 and challenge Chicago for Home Field. We'll see. Lucky McNabb is from Chicago and has a history of great games at Soldier Field. :D

UH OH!!!!!!
FIVE REASONS WHY ?
-the Eagles could very well end up having a say in which is the best team in the NFL, even though the Bears merit that distinction for now:
-McNabb is playing perhaps the best football of his career.
-The offense has quick-strike capability from Stallworth and Hank Baskett, to go along with its usual short and intermediate effectiveness.
-Reid is doing the best coaching job in the league.
-Jim Johnson is the smartest defensive coordinator in the league.
-Brian Westbrook provides a dangerous, multi-talented force in the backfield.

Of course it makes sense. He's hanging an argument that the running game is effective on the amount of TD's the rushing game has produced. What he fails to mention is that 3 of those TD's were produced by the QB, not any rushing game.
And when teams throw for a lot of yards, it's usually early in the season when the weather is better. McNabb has been throwing a lot of long balls so far. That'll slow down in the winter whether you believe so or not. When the weather sets in, you running game will show it's heart. In other words, you'll fail again.

Yeah. Tony Kornheiser made a joke about it, saying we should all get on the Superbowl Bandwagon. He was being sarcastic. But then we kept on winning. :)
That 5-0 record included three home games, two of which were division games, that the Redskins won by a combined score of 102-0. It also included a road division win.
And even then our local columnists were making jokes about calling us superbowl winners too soon.

Look, I said before the season that the Eagles were the team to beat in the NFCE. I still believe that and I still believe they've got the right formula; dominant and deep on both lines, best QB in the NFC, excellent secondary. Now, that being said, you guys haven't even played that well. You're 1-1 in home division games and almost gave away the second one, saved only by the egregious stupidity of Drew Bledsoe. Other than that, well, you've beat 3 teams Georgia Tech could probably beat. I still think the Eagles, more likely than not, win the NFCE but you have question marks. Like the fact that you wear out your own defenses and always keep the opposition in the game by never running the ball successfully. That WILL bite you sooner or later. Basically, congratulations on one real win, a suspect one at that, and come back when you've played some real teams. Wins against GB, Hou and SF don't impress me much and you should be 5-0 if not for a supreme choke job at home.

If people were on here saying the bears D is overrated (look at who they played!!!, etc. etc.), I would jump in and say the same things. 90% of the conversations on here are about the Eagles, and 90% of the time skins fans here don't give them their due. Just sayin. :whoknows:
A Saints fan constantly helping an Eagle fan rub our noses in their early season record wonders why I'm puzzled? Go figure.

"-Reid is doing the best coaching job in the league."
Thats the funniest thing I've ever read. The Eagles win inspite of Reid's awful playcalling and decisions... not because of him. It's third and inches. What do you call? Well in any normal scenario a QB sneak or a run up the gut. Nope. Let's call a pass to the tight end in a 3 step drop.

Wow Westbrook.. you sure came up with a lot of good points. I'm impressed with your football knowledge. Just not at all impressed with your spelling. Once again you have proved just how intelligent Philadelphia fans really are....You can babble all day long but when it is crunch time....you FOLD... use spell check or buy a freaking dictionary

I'm not doing any gloating. I don't care about the rivalry. Just giving a really good team the credit they deserve.
A lot of arguments around here are really stupid, spun from the loom of homerland. As a (rather) objective observer, it's pretty funny. I can't help but chime in.

Ah, just spreading Truth, Justice and Objective Intelligence to messageboards everywhere. Thanks for gracing us with such altruistic sacrifice. :)
FYI, you have been throwing your hat in with a guy who's spent years here as an enfant provocatuer (http://redwing.hutman.net/~mreed/warriorshtm/enfantprovocateur.htm). For someone who doesn't care much about anything save intelligent debate you've sure been choosing some odd company to keep.

Nah, just this one and the saints board I frequent. Sableholic showed me this board a couple years back, helps kill the time.

Given the alternative, I'm ok with it for now. :silly:

Do you REALLY want me to post McNabbs stats comparing December to September, for his career? I know for a fact he is a hot finisher, just like the Eagles. Again, when someone has nothing but straws to grasp at, they just ignore convenient little facts like how McNabb has played in December Philly winters for 7 years now...
You missed the point entirely.

When the 91 Skins started out 5-0, did anyone say they were a good team at that point? :silly:
Well since we bet the 12-4 Lions 45-0
we bet the 11-5 Cowboys 33-31 (road)
we bet the 10-6 Eagles 23-0
in that 5 game stretch instead of a bunch of division AA teams..... a wee bit different (we also shutout the Cardinals on the road 34-0 for 3 shutouts in the first 5 games)
the 6th game we beat the 11-5 Bears 20-7 (road)

Man, I don't have any idea where thespaniard is coming from...he could just as easily defend the pukes...why the Eagles when he's a Saint's fan?

Well, I often find myself defending you guys outside of the internet.
Example : This past Monday, me and my boys sat around playing cards. Everyone was drinking and blowing the Eagles horn about how they are head and shoulder above the rest of the NFC East. Out of nowhere, I went on a 10 minute tirade defending the Skins as the only true threat left to the Eagles. Not only did I play the Shawn Springs card, but I also used stats and trends. God, I felt like Bubba had transported himself into my soul that evening.
So to answer your question, regardless of your passion for your team, common sense normally overcomes homerism, that is if you have any common sense to begin with.

It's true.....at one point I said....
" Sure, we can run up the score on the also rans of the league, but trust me, when Gregg Williams has his full unit playing like they can, watch out. We ain't gonna put up 35 points against thouse boys. Sean Taylor won't let it happen."
I felt like peeing in my own mouth at that point, so I grabbed a bottle of vodka and sat in the corner until my senses came back to me.
