Just curious.
I know many of you probably grew up as Orioles fans.
My problem is this.
If you live in the DC Metropolitan area, how can you not switch over to the Nats? If you are not from B-More you may not know this. Baltimore fans DESPISE Washington fans, the Redskins, and the Wizards, and the Caps. They are sellouts for the terps...which is not their team
How can you support these guys who despise us so much????

Baltimore Ravens fans hate the Redskins. Redskins fans (mostly) don't give a damn about the Ravens.
Nationals fans hate the Orioles. Orioles fans (mostly) don't give a damn about the Nationals. Although Nats and O's fans can agree on one thing. PA SUCKS!
As for myself. I grew up with Orioles posters in my room and have no intentions of switching teams. ever. I wear the classic Orioles cartoon bird permanently on my ankle. Loyalties simply don't wash away.

Honestly for me growing up, when it came to Baseball...it was the Orioles, AND NOTHING ELSE....But after almost a decade of losing, I have started to change the ways of my thinking...
See, I was born in Olney, raised in Columbia, and currently for the past 5 years have lived in B-More...Growing up, I was always around Baltimore more then D.C., but only because the city of bmore was 100 times more easier to access, from a traffic and convenience standpoint.
Anyways..I started getting interested in sports at a very young age..like 6...I remember watching the Skins with my dad, making an occasional trip to RFK with my pops, going to O's games, and watching the Bullets play on old wdca 20.
So there it was for me...The Skins, The Orioles, and the Bullets (in that order)...and that was it from then, to current day. I would never have ever fathomed EVER liking ANY other team, except for these 3. I would have never rooted for another team of the same sport as one of my favs....you get the point.
That is...UNTIL this past season...I dont know why...but it hit me, I was slow (like 8 season slow) to realize...My Orioles SUCK...and they have almost lost all interest from me...I still like them...but 10-15 years ago, I would have NEVER missed an O's gaming barring work or something else you cant get out of. Yet, I think I only watched a handful of games this year...like maybe 15? This is also the first year, that I didnt go to a single game...and I live right next to the stadium...
So I have come to the conclusion..I am also a NATS fan, screw it...why not? They play in different leagues, and play each other like 6 times a year, if at all...BUT...I will...for the first time in MY LIFE...root for two teams...of the same sport, and...the Orioles have slipped to third on my fav teams list...
I am sorry for this long drown out post...but I read the first post in here, and was going to just make a simple reply, but it all started flowing out of my brain...and I couldnt stop...But this is possibly the lowest point for me as an Oriole fan, and they need to do something...NOW...or the future might be bleek for the Orioles and I in the near future...
DAMN ANGELOS :redpunch: !!! DAMN HIM!!!! So sad, how he has ruined a once proud franchise... :(

Nope, Baltimore fans in general despise everything Washington.
And Nats fans don't hate the O's.
BS....
Baltimore was the team when I grew up, I have nothing against the Orioles, but why should I switch teams because some team moved in closer...
I grew up loving players like Murray, Ripken, Anderson, Erickson, Hoiles, Mussina(traitor), Milligan, and the like...
Being a baseball fan and a baseball player in my youth, my dreams were to play with the Orioles...
Watching baseball reminds me of my youth and therefore the team that I cheered for in my youth.
I am an Orioles fan, Not a Baltimore fan... I only love one baseball team...
and YES Nationals fans DO hate the ORIOLES. and YES, Orioles fans COULD CARE LESS about the Nationals....
Why should I switch... give me some kind of reason other than the fact that the Nats moved closer.... If everyone thought the way that you do every time then when someone who grows up in boston moves near baltimore then they should switch loyalties too shouldn't they? What about if someone who lives in DC and LOVES the Nationals and moves to baltimore... are they supposed to drop their Redskin and Nationals loyalties and become a Ravens/Orioles fan?
Geography is simply no reason to switch loyalties, becoming sick of an owner or because a team abandoned you (see the Browns moving to B-more or the Colts moving to Indy), or if you did't really care that much about the team but more about the sport to begin with...
See My uncle switched, and I have no problem with him switching because he rooted for the Orioles because they were close, but he grew up loving the Senators... so he honestly had good reason to switch to washington baseball because he was switching BACK to washington baseball....
Why is it that Nationals fans who switched over can't leave us who didn't alone?
I have a theory, its that our unflinching loyalty makes you feel bad about your choice to abandon your team. You changed and everyone else changing makes you feel better about changing, but others not makes you doubt your possition...
If my theory is correct then all I have to say is, Be happy with your decision, nobody is questioning you for switching over. You don't need my support to stand on your own 2 feet and stand up for your own decision. You made it, be proud of it.

And Nats fans don't hate the O's. Nope, they just hate Peter Angelos for sticking it to them in the T.V. side of it all.

I grew up watching the Orioles, the first game I watch was in Memorial Stadium when I was a little child. No matter where I am at in life the Orioles would still be my favorite team. Even though the Nationals has come to DC, doesn't mean that I should just changed teams. Yes I have gone to 3 Nationals game, and did not go to a Orioles game. The reason I went to the Nationals game because we got tickets for free. Some of my parents friends gave them to us.

Where is this assertion coming from? I know plenty of people who are Orioles/Redskins fans and you know why? Because when people my age (24) were young, the O's and the Skins were the only teams in town so they formed allegiences. Once you're firmly established as a fan, you can't stop no matter what options become available. That's the way I've always looked at it, anyway.

If your family is from baltimore and grew up in the colts era, but always were Redskins fans you are not typical. If your dad switched to the skins once the colts left you are in the minority.
I work in the baltimore area with baltimore bred people. They think we stole the caps and bullets, blame dc for not getting another team for so long...and despise everything baltimore. If you deny this you need to get out more.

Autograph collector, none of your logic makes any sense....
You say that we should become fans of the Nats because other Bmore fans hate the redskins, but you say that you understand not being able to switch allegiance....
Frankly not everyone that is a fan of a particular team is going to agree with all the other fans when it comes to other stuff, like say if a majority of Bmore fans leaned a certian direction politically then by your logic I should switch either from the team or my political alegiance.... Just like Politics has nothing to do with baseball, so does football has nothing to do with baseball....
My love of the Orioles does in no way associate me with being an @$$hole from baltimore in any way except that I cheer for the same team.. just because they want to be jerks about other crap doesn't mean that I should switch baseball teams...

I've switched. I'm disgusted on where this team is headed, and how Angelos wants to pocket some extra cash rather than win. All his players know they are NEVER going to win, and whenever they go for an elite player in free agency there always is a "limit". Hello?!?! There is no salary cap, there's going to be no penalties for bidding high for a player because you are far below the luxury tax.
When you look at the Nats they got: new stadium (2008), new owners, new coaches (TBD), a bonafide superstar, and a great city to play in. They're only going to get better.

I was born in a hospital in Baltimore does that count? Although I lived in Delaware most my life I'm still a Bird fan and always will be. Living in JVille I don't get to see them as often so I miss watching them on TV and Live.
Now I could not sit here and just switch teams like a light switch. The passion you have for rooting on a favorite team would not be the same (Not even close) So to tell others that they are being disloyal to the redskins because they are Bird fans seems to be a bit of a stretch.
Personaly I feel you started this post just to get a rise out of some peps.

Never could bring myself to like anything from Baltimore, so I lived life without a favorite baseball team until the Nationals came to town. I LOVE baseball, and played it for several years. I have almost as much passion for baseball as I do for football, but that still didn't get me to root for a *gag* Baltimore team. Just wasn't happening. But I think those who were fans of the O's and turned to the Nats weren't true fans, they were just casual baseball fans who watched the closest team they could find while waiting for a D.C. team to show up. Redskins fans who are O's fans, I don't fault you for sticking with your teams. That's what makes you a true fan.
I never had a team, but I'm so happy to finally adopt one as my own. It's a joy I kind of wished I had when I was younger, but I'm glad I waited otherwise I'd be stuck with the O's. I don't change teams easily. Going to stick with the Nats and Skins until the very end.
Oh, and are you saying that D.C. fans are the sellouts for rooting on the Terps? College Park is right outside D.C., buddy. Can't make the "well it's not inside D.C." arguement because Landover isn't inside D.C. either. As far as I'm concerned, it's Baltimore fans who are the sellouts rooting for a D.C. area team. Actually I don't really think that way, I really don't care either way about the Terps to be honest, my team is Rutgers. Just making a point though that it's a D.C. area team and not Baltimore (if that's what you were saying, perhaps you meant that Baltimorans were the sellouts)
Go Nats! Go Skins! Go R.U.!

I grew up in Virginia and at the time the Orioles were the closest team. I fell in love with them (though not as deeply as with the Redskins) and I'm sorry, I can't just "switch".
I live in Tennessee now. Should I just "switch" to the Titans because they are the local team? That's not something I can even begin to think about.
My loyalties run too deep and I'm not going to jump ship just because another team moves in. I couldn't care less what the people in Baltimore think about the Redskins. That has nothing to do with my love for the Orioles.
I may be delusional but I feel that someday my faithfulness will rewarded.
