View Full Version : Remember Brad Johnson and Jeff George?
Gibbs for President

Remember in 2000 how it seemed most people wanted Jeff George(including Danny Snyder) to replace Brad Johnson and it finally happened. How that work out for them? Then also we had no defense and everybody blamed the QB. If this Defense would have even showed up at all this year we would be 4-2. This year and everything around it mirrors 2000. Overpriced not needed free agents, whiny fans looking a scapecoat, and underachieving players. You can not just buy wins!!!!

Except in 2000 we started 6-2 then choked in the final 8 games to go 8-8. So as of right now, we are behind the 2000 team.

with all due respect to them, this is a little different. Funny how Brad Johnson has the highest career completion percentage, and he's one of the only QB's to lead 3 different teams to the playoffs. I can see how Jeff George was such a solid replacement....

When did Jeff George take over that year? I still have images of Ekuban dragging him on the turf at Dallas and none of our players coming to his defense.

the one thing that goes unsaid about Brad Johnson is at what a terribly high cost he came to the Redskins. Casserly gave up #1, #2 and #3 draft choices for Brad to the Vikings. Johnson at that point was a 29 year old quarterback that had not had the kind of career progression and productivity that warranted that type of compensation.
And he had failed to remain healthy for the Vikings. A trend that continued here in 2000.
Jeff George always had the talent to be a top quarterback but never had the mental toughness. Teammates didn't respect him. Coaches wanted to get rid of him as quickly as the GMs brought him in the door.
Snyder was in love with his talent and there wasn't anyone in the Redskins organization left to give him an honest read on Jeff George when it came time to decide on whether to sign him or not.
Vinny Cerrato never had any independence and Norv was already on the out list. Only the 10-6 record and playoff berth in 1999 saved Norv from getting axed immediately by the new ownership.
This year the case is completely different. There are no bad apples at quarterback. All three quarterbacks have a good attitude and are positive teammates that players respect.
The clear issue is WHEN do you make a transition at the most important position on the field.
Gibbs is of the belief that you have to have a veteran to win with. Recent NFL history (as opposed to his experience from 1981-92) says you can win with a 24 or 25 year old quarterback. You don't need a 35 year old player with 10 plus years experience.
Gibbs also believes you don't give up on a season until all the games are played.
For all practical purposes, a loss against the Colts means the Redskins are sitting home in January.
With the competitive pressures in the NFC East, why not take advantage of that limbo status in getting Campbell, McIntosh and Co. on the field and get them the experience they will need to make an impact in 2007.

hindsight is 20/20. no one thought it was a dumb controversy at the time.
but now, my favorite phrase when a ball is thrown into the ground or 10 yards off is "he pulled a jeff george"

Uh, sorry friend. Your memory needs work. Our Defense was 4th in the NFL that year. Our offense sucked. Our pass defense was 2nd in the league that year.

It was so totally Jeff George's fault that the 2000 season went to hell in a handbasket.
Lets review.....Skins at 6-3 after losing to the Titans on MNF, then:
at Arizona: we lose when Stephen Davis fumbles in the end zone and its returned for a TD the other way, and Kris Heppner can't hit a key FG from inside 40 in the 4th (6-4). I don't remember the exact score but I think both teams were in the teens.
at St. Louis: we win a game which features George throwing a great TD pass to Thrash. (7-4) Unfortunately, Stephen Davis is injured during the game which leads to:
Philly: key point in this game is where we have six downs inside the 3 at a key point in the 3rd quarter and we can't get a TD because we're relying on Skip Hicks. Also, Eddie Murray misses a FG from around 45 which would've tied the game late (7-5). Think the score was like 20-17.
NY Giants: Brad Johnson makes his glorious return and proceeds to score zero points through 3 quarters. George comes in ans leads the Skins to a TD and puts them in position for a GW FG but once again Murray is short, and we lose 9-7. Skins are 7-6, Norv gets fired, team in disarray.
Yeppers......Jeff George and a poor defense were so much the reason behind the 2000 collapse.

Green retired at the end of the 2002-2003 season. Champs rookie year was in 99, the year before we signed Lavar and Samuels.

close enough, so we had the vet HOF Cb in Darrell and the future HOF second year guy Champ Bailey, i can see why our secondary was strong, imagine if we'd had Taylor then too....

And surely you remember the OTHER guy who was in our secondary....in fact, I vaguely remember him wearing the same number Taylor does now. I believe the guy also returned punts. I think Snyder paid him a little money for the one year he was here. Why can't I recall his name??

Its no secret that Green took Bailey under his wing and helped his development into a premier corner.
Just wish we had someone to do that with Rogers, Wright, Rumph, etc. Springs is good but he doesn't hold a candle to Darrell Green in any way.

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/was2000.htm I stand corrected. I think the other points are true though. All the team really needed was a kicker. How many games did we lose in 99 and 2000 because of no kicker. You know all the bad years since 91 melt together for me sometimes. Thanks for correcting my memory.

Yea the difference is Bailey had a lot more raw talent than Wright or Rumph you cant teach that. I think the verdict is still out on Rogers.

With some decent kicking that year (and some decent holding the year before), we could have won a couple more.
But honestly, this is completely different from any Jeff George situation.

Yea...washed up vet versus untested rookie.
Or above average QB in prime of his career versus talented cancer/coach killer that every teammate on every team in his life has hated.

I'm a bit biased as I have to admit I still have a #14 Brad Johnson jersey in the dresser at home. However, put me down as someone who was very disappointed to see him go. In fact, for the past couple of weeks I've had this recurring thought about how different the past 6 years would have been if Danny hadn't run him out of town.

I remember the 2000 Philly game when Eddie Murray missed the 44 yard FG. I remember him being 44 and saying, I guess I can't kick my age! I was actually on the sidelines for the Philly game, and was told by the person I was with, that, since we would miss the FG and lose, I should run ahead into the tunnel and watch Snyder put on his angry face to greet all of the players as they returned. It had to be the funniest thing I had ever seen. Snyder stood outside the locker room door with his arms crossed, beet red face, and gave a dirty look to all the players who HAD to walk past him to get into the locker room. He would do this after every loss. Something tells me that Gibbs doesn't let Snyder do this anymore.....Ah the good old days of 2000

Amen, put Darrell Green back on the payroll as the cornerback coach!! Please!! Also, for the record, I was NOT a fan who wanted Jeff George to Brad Johnson. As I recall, Brad had the same problem that Ramsey did; he had weak protection and found it difficult to throw from the horizontal position. I'm not saying Ramsey is as good as Brad Johnson, but that our pass protection hasn't gotten much better over the last decade, causing all of our QBs to look worse than they really were/are. :2cents:

I didn't believe it until I saw it with my own eyes. It's VERY hard for me to say this, but it ALMOST made the loss worth it so that I could experience it. I used to be a HUGE Danny hater, cause of things like this, and many more. But at this point, he's done what we asked. He brought back Gibbs, and got out of the football part of the business.
