View Full Version : Brunells Arm Strength

Ok, does Brunell have arm strength or not?
I see it in passes that he made against Dallas last year, then the pass to Lloyd against the Titans.
Then he makes some ridiculous passes deep against the Cowboys this year, then against the Titans at the end of the game.
If he can throw deep, why not more routes where Moss just sprints down the sideline and catches it midstride? Not many DBs can stay with Moss stride for stride...if Lloyd is covered then Randle El etc.
I just don't know if arm strength is an excuse or what, cause he shows flashes of a strong deep ball, just not consistently.
Plus, if he lifts weights hard each offseason, why would his arm strength be an issue? Hes 36 years old, not an age where you should lose any type of significant muscle.

I think that the O-Line doesn't give Brunell or the receivers enough time to do their job effectively...I think he still has the strength...

there are tons of theories that saunders has held back the team because of "brunell's ol' noodle arm", but i really doubt that his arm is as terrible as a lot of people say. he's older, yeah, but he can still zip the hell out of the ball.
as 2004 showed us, when he's hurt, he's can play pretty poorly.

Brunell has arm strength when he has a clear path and can wind up and throw (with a follow through). The problem has been, that he seems to be afraid to throw like that unless there is no one anywhere near him.
In addition, there are many times when the #1/#2 options are obviously downfield, but then Brunell checks down to the back or TE. So technically it's not arm strength, but rather not chosing to throw deep.
One possibility is Brunell not feeling comfortable with the downfield adjustments that are required in Saunder's playbook. Unless the reciever and Brunell are on the same page in how they read the defense, one of them might "misread" the adjustment and Brunell will end up throwing it right to one of the defenders. Just a theory....
On the whole, I have seen Brunell put some zip on the ball this year, so I don't think the issue is "technically" arm strength, but rather the decision making behind the throws....

Brunell relies on his entire body to throw the ball deep. He puts a lot of his lower body into his throws. This is entirely different than a guy like Carson P., Manning, or even Jason Campbell. When Brunell gets banged up, he doesn't put much on his throws hence the toenail effect or the knee effect. His throws get squirrelly if he isn't fresh.
One last observation: Watch the Jags game versus the last two games he's played in. There is a noticeable difference, to me at least. There are guys with naturally strong arms, and there are guys like Brunell, Brady, and Pennington. Brady has an pretty avg. arm but his height helps him accomplish things that a 6'0 tall qb cannot. Brunell gets in trouble when his lower body is banged up, or he gets spooked in the pocket. Ever notice how he ducks when he throws especially if he's been getting hit or hurried a lot in a given game? This ought to give you some insight on how far along or better...how NOT far along Jason Campbell is in this system. Brunell played horrible in the second half last week. Lord knows I would rather see the Brunell we saw in the first half versus the Brunell we saw in the second half.

I really think the coaches don't trust the O-line and therein lies the problem.

Enough with trying to defend this loser. He and Patrick Ramsey are the same. They both suck ass.

The main problem would be his happy feet and unwillingness to hold the ball long enough to go downfield without panicking first. He'll also only throw it deep mostly when someone is WIDE open. It doesn't seem like he has confidence to throw it in tight spots. Also, it really all depends on where Moss is going because the man just plain IS NOT going through reads right now. He just isn't.

Why must there always be a person who wants to turn a Mark Brunell thread into a "I hate Mark Brunell" thread. No one's trying to defend Brunell here. This thread is about his arm strength. Get over it.
BTW, I agree with loudmouth. Brunell's arm isn't that strong, but his legs and mechanics can make up for it.
