View Full Version : Why do we suck in shootouts?

Well, so far on this roadtrip we have 3 of 4 points, so I guess there's not much to complain about. Except, of course, that we CAN'T WIN A FREAKING SHOOTOUT! I mean, the sheer odds of it would have us winning one by now. Honestly, I think Hanlon needs to consider taking AO off of it for a couple of weeks. He's thinking too much, and most of his shots are either hitting the post or missing the net completely. Have we even scored 2/3 on a shootout yet this year? Any thoughts?

I don't know what the **** is going on! We may not have the most explosive offense, but this team should dominate shootouts. Kolzig has to be PISSED!

Last year SO was our forte. It'll come back - we just need to win one, and then we'll be ok.

Going along with Ovechkin's struggles, I just think he needs to get one, and then he will become automatic on SO's like he was last year.
His last SO against Vancouver just hit off the post, so at least he is making progress....

I agree. He's our best shooter, let him play, and he will shoot himself out of this... Taking him out for a while isn't going to relax him. There's a chance it would have the opposite effect.

What a shock. We drop another one in a Shoot Out. We are officialy 0 for 12 (scoring-wise) in the shootout. Yep, that's right, we've had 4 SO's, and couldn't score a SINGLE goal. We might as well just pack it in at this point if we get through overtime. Semin plunks it right of the goalie's pad, AO does a dink move and goes to his backhand (goalie had it read the whole way), and Pettinger...well, not really sure what he was doing, but he missed. This is so frustrating.

They should try Mikko Koivu's move, he Fakes going to the glove side by moving waist and shoulders, goes to the blocker side and shoots. Works every time for him
His older brother Saku Koivu did the same thing, worked like a charm.

I think this is mostly just bad luck. Getting a point is good. The law of averages will catch up.

Ovechkin said they are having bad luck in the shootout and he and Semin are going to practice it more.
I hope so because it's costing them a lot of points.

unfortunately, the shootout is more about handling pressure than simply stickhandling and shooting alone per se.
the reason the Caps players are failing to score consistently in the extra session in my opinion is strictly inexperience. these guys are YOUNG.
Hanlon is sending out Ovechkin (21), Semin (22) and Pettinger (25) for the shootouts.
Even though they may be the club's best snipers (Pettinger has been hurt but scored 20 plus last year), it might behoove the club to add a veteran or two to shake things up.
Zednik took a couple of turns early in the season, so I am thinking more of a guy like Chris Clark or even a defenseman like Jamie Heward, who has excellent offensive skills.

Who sucks now herrmag?!?!? That's right, we're 1-5!!!!
(meant to post this after our shootout win on Sunday - in the longest game I've ever watched thanks to the 4 'glass' delays).
edit - oops, forgot to check last night's boxscore. We are now 1-6. :(

This is NOT something I wished for. :( But, apparently the law of averages is NOT going to catch up with this team. Their shootout and powerplay units straight up stink, and have the whole season. I can't even imagine how many points we've lost because we don't have a consistent PP.

I cant believe nobody has said this yet. I was listening the Caps Show or whatever it's called on 980 and they said that we don't practice penalty shots. I'm sure most if not all the other teams do. Hanlon said that we are going to start practicing it....

I heard the Skins haven't practiced field goals in 3 years. Oh and the Wiz haven't practiced free throws in 4. This is so retarded it's funny.
Pre-emptive EDIT: I wonder if they are ever going to fix the quote feature in this forum.
