SEC puts limits on rooster crowing at South Carolina
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2646733
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The rooster won't crow as much at South Carolina's Williams-Brice Stadium.
The Southeastern Conference has told the Gamecocks they can only play a rooster crow during timeouts, after a score, before the game, during halftime and when the game ends.
South Carolina had been playing the rooster crow before critical third downs and other times to pump up the crowd.
The SEC told the Gamecocks they were breaking conference regulations about when artificial noise could be played.
"We are certainly disappointed that we have to limit the Gamecock crow, as we know its a crowd favorite, but obviously we will comply with the Southeastern Conference rules and regulations," said Jeff Crane, the university's athletics marketing director.
Really? What is this world coming to? "Sorry guys you must ease up on the whole rooster crow thing. I mean really, people are trying to play football here. What do you think this is? Some kind of sporting event? Or maybe some kind of entertainment thats fun when everyone screams and yells. You crazy kids!!!"
I could understand if maybe USCeast played it maybe during the play, or just before the snap, but come on. Im sure the rooster crowing non stop is probably just as annoying as the Seminole War Chant non stop, but big freaking deal. Why don't we just all join hands and ban crowd noise in its entirety next!.
Excuse me, I will now step down from my soap box and you may continue with your day.

First of all, the limit is on artificial noise. That's entirely different from crowd noise, which requires an actual fan effort -- not just some schlub in the scoreboard operator's room pushing Play every 45 seconds.
Second, how often do you need to hear the rooster anyway? I mean, why not just put it on infinite loop for the entire game?
Isn't "...during timeouts, after a score, before the game, during halftime and when the game ends" enough?
NC State ought to have the wolf howl going nonstop, then. And imagine going to Bama and hearing the elephant all game long. Miami playing wind noise through the speakers. WVU with simulated musket shots over the PA, or Louisville with a vicious "CHEEP CHEEP CHEEP!"
You have to put a limit on these things. This seems pretty reasonable to me.
Other schools have been asked to curtail their post-score activities (cannons, etc.). That, to me, is silly. But it's reasonable to say you can't go playing some dumb thing through the PA every time the other team lines up for a big 3rd down. The artificial noise can affect the crowd, but shouldn't be an element of the game.

Well, i'm not disagreeing with what you say mjah.
There should be some sign of restraint. There definitely is a breaking point. And yes I know, artificial noise different then crowd and has governing regulations. And yeah, certain noises would certainly be annoying with over use.
But I think my point is that there are bigger concerns than for the SEC to issue such a mandate. Also, homefield advantage. So long as the noise doesn't disrupt the game or interefere, why not?
I would say a conference really should only act out publically on these things when the noise in question has a negative affect on everyone especially the home team's fan base. I don't think I've ever heard someone complain about too many rooster crows at USC. I've heard complaints about FSUs warchant. But big deal. Homefield advantage.
i would add crucial third downs to the list of times allowed to play a sound over the pa. I mean, wouldnt you, as Maryland fan, love to hear on a crucial third down to get the stadium fired up the mighty terrapin's......oh.... i see now.
You're just hating cause turtle's dont really make a noise. Maybe a hiss or a click. You just wish you could play a cool rooster crow, a gobble, an elephant, or gun fire. If you can't play a sound why should others, huh? All is clear to me now.
By the way, I meant for this to be a joke thread, I really couldn't care less about the USC rooster crow. Just trying to lighten the mood after the WVU-LU game last night.

Turtles don't make much noise, save for a throaty "COWABUNGA!" now and then.
Then the soft click of an unleashed katana blade, and now your head's off.
Then, silence.
Take FSU's advice and, starting at some point in the indeterminate future when we manage to get a reasonably skilled quarterback, once again begin to Fear the Turtle. Until then, better keep looking over your shoulder.
;)
Incidentally, the stadium was rockin' pretty hard against FSU. Got some compliments from folks who were down on the FSU sideline and couldn't believe how loud it was on the field. Not bad for a full house of fewer than 60,000 fans and a bizarre, open stadium layout.
What Maryland doesn't do, though, is pipe in artificial barnyard noises at pivotal moments of the game. Blaring rooster noises when the opposing QB is about to go under center is taking it too far.
A typical college football crowd has more than enough loud, obnoxious c0cks in it already. It baffles me that "USC" * finds it necessary to pipe in yet another loud, obnoxious c0ck on the PA.
* "USC" = "University of Southern California", strangely misappropriated in the southeastern US to mean "University of South Carolina"

I like MD's stadium. I went to the BC MD game last fall. Tough loss for the terps. The saddest thing however, is the Chevy Chase Bank Field thingy. Random donor names sound much better. See VT - Worsham Field at Lane Stadium. Chevy Chase Bank Field makes me think of Papa John's Stadium. I also like geographical relevant names like 3 Rivers Stadium or Beaver Stadium. It was also a sad day when it became Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium. I'd much rather stick with just Byrd Stadium.

I remember reading that South Carolina sued for the right to use USC as they were the first university to do so, and to my recolation won the lawsuit. But I can't find a supporting link, and could have possibly entirely made that up. But thats why I and some others reference them as USCe. You're right So Cal will always be USC no matter what.
Poor South Carolina, first the USC thing and now the crow. They do make great t-shirts though. "You can't lick our *****" and for when South Carolina played Navy they made a shirt that said "Our ***** will blow your ***** away." Ahh good times.

I remember that at Maryland, there was always one guy in each fraternity who would obtain and wear a "C0CKS" hat as a fun, ironic thing. You know, That Guy.
Did a double-take the first time I saw it. :D
