I love Roberts, but I would make this trade in a heartbeat.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. // The Orioles have vowed to explore every avenue to acquire a middle-of-the-lineup bat and apparently that includes entertaining a trade offer for one of their most popular players.

According to several industry sources, the Orioles have had serious discussions about a deal that would send second baseman Brian Roberts and pitching prospect Hayden Penn to the Atlanta Braves for power-hitting first baseman Adam LaRoche and second baseman Marcus Giles.

The deal has "several hurdles," according to a source familiar with the trade talks, with a major one being Peter Angelos' preference to keep Roberts, who has long been a favorite of the Orioles' owner.

As of late last night, a club source said it's very unlikely that the deal would get approved.

Giles, 28, a year younger than Roberts, has only one year left on his contract.

I am in favor of this trade. Even though I don't want to see Roberts go, but it will give us a power-hitting 1b that we need. But the only problem we have is the Angelos won't allow that trade to happen.

I'd rather offer Penn straight up for LaRoche. It's likely that Atl wants to move him anyway. LaRoche tends to make mental mistakes on the basepaths and in the field on somewhat of a regular basis, and has drawn ire from Bobby Cox on several occasions.

I'm always skeptical of a platoon player like LaRoche (He doesn't hit lefty's) and especially after a career year when his trade value is at his highest.

Giles isn't the player that Roberts is, and he could end up being a one year rental anyway. Not worth the second most important poss player you have, even though some of their stats line up.

I'll pass.

As i said in another thread, I'd try to deal just for LaRoche. Penn and another player. I suggest Gibbons, I doubt Atlanta would bite though.

Tough call, but I'll say I agree with the decision. The deciding factor was Giles being a free agent after this year. Roberts would also leave a void at leadoff, even though Corey Patterson could fill that spot if he could cut down his strikeouts significantly
