Ex-49er Parrish a safety net for Cowboys

07:25 PM CST on Thursday, December 7, 2006

By TODD ARCHER / The Dallas Morning News

IRVING – The Cowboys' contingency plans continued Thursday when they claimed veteran safety Tony Parrish off waivers from San Francisco.

Parrish started the first five games for San Francisco and has 17 tackles this season. He was inactive the last three games before he was cut. Parrish shattered his right fibula last year and reports out of San Francisco said he had lost a step. In nine seasons, Parrish, 5-11, 210 pounds, has 30 interceptions, including two last year against the Cowboys.

Coach Bill Parcells has expressed concern most of the season about the free safety position, although Parrish has not played there regularly since his rookie year in Chicago in 1998. Keith Davis has started the last five games at free safety, and rookie Patrick Watkins started the first six games.

If Parrish, 31, sticks on the roster for the rest of the season, he will earn roughly $470,000 as part of his $2 million base salary. He will be a free agent when the season ends.

To make room for Parrish, the Cowboys waived Skyler Green, but he could be brought back to the practice squad.

Parcells has a history of making late-season acquisitions of veterans. In 2003, he added kick returner Michael Bates with one game to play. With New England, he added tight end/fullback Keith Byars and cornerback Otis Smith after the midway point of the 1996 season that ended at Super Bowl XXXI.

Julius Jones fresh for stretch run: Like any running back, Julius Jones would like more carries.

"But the situation that we're in, we're winning, so I can't complain," Jones said. "It's selfish to want more playing time."

After opening the season with at least 17 carries in the first five games, Jones has eclipsed that figure only three times in the last seven games. He is on pace for 1,169 yards, which would be a career high and the most by a Cowboys running back since Emmitt Smith had 1,203 in 2000.

With the strong play of Marion Barber, who leads the NFC with 13 touchdowns, Jones is fresh as the regular season approaches the final month.

"I'm healthy, and [Parcells] has been talking about resting me or whatever, but I'm good and I'm ready to go whenever he needs me," Jones said.

NFL honors Romo: Parcells does not want to consider Tony Romo among the NFC's best quarterbacks, despite Romo's league-leading 102.4 passer rating, but the NFL recognized the Cowboys' quarterback for his work in November, naming him the NFC's Offensive Player of the Month.

In four games, three wins, Romo completed 85 of 117 passes for 1,124 yards with nine touchdowns and one interception.

He was named the NFC's Player of the Week twice in November after throwing for a career-high 308 yards and two touchdowns at Arizona on Nov. 12 and his career-high five-touchdown effort vs. Tampa Bay on Thanksgiving.

In November, Romo led the NFL in passer rating (124.7) and completion percentage (72.6) and led the NFC in touchdown passes and was second in yards.

Briefly: Parcells said one of the contingencies the Cowboys are looking at is possibly adding a third quarterback to the active roster over the final month. Parcells said he has liked the work of Matt Baker, who is on the practice squad. ... The Cowboys' college scouts are in town this week for meetings, awaiting the bowl season.
