IRVING -- Bill Parcells has talked about his Cowboys building a strong foundation of confidence.
It will be tested coming off the team's worst loss of the season.
Parcells admitted Monday his team lacked focus, preparation and was feeling too good about itself in the 42-17 debacle to the Saints on Sunday night. All the excitement and momentum built off the four-game winning streak crashed at Texas Stadium.
"When you take a bad beating, you have to get it back and you have to be quick to recover," Parcells said. "We don't have that luxury."
The Saints loss capped a week that included Terrell Owens throwing a birthday party for himself in Hollywood and players fighting in practice and in the locker room.
All in the same week, Parcells was trying to get his team focused on what championship teams need to do down the stretch.
One of Parcells best teams -- his 1996 New England Patriots -- took a late season beating before a Super Bowl run. The Patriots lost at home against Denver 34-8 in November and went on to Super Bowl XXXI.
With the Giants in 1990, Parcells' team was blasted 31-13 at Philadelphia in late November, but won Super Bowl XXV.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones experienced his own late-season blowout in a Super Bowl championship year. In 1995, the Cowboys lost 38-20 to San Francisco at home in November before finishing 12-4 and defeating Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XXX.
All three of the previously mentioned teams had losses in December.
"I can give them several stories of teams that got their tales kicked and won Super Bowls that we've been apart of," Jones said. "It can happen to you in the National Football League."
No T.O. reaction
Bill Parcells rarely talks in depth about controversial receiver Terrell Owens.
So it was no surprise he didn't want to talk about Owens' recent comments on ESPN about feeling betrayed by the organization and having a lack of focus on the field.
What was Parcells' reaction to Owens' comments?
"I don't have one," he said.
Still confident in Gramatica
Despite missing a 43-yard field-goal attempt, Bill Parcells remains confident in kicker Martin Gramatica.
Gramatica barely missed wide right against the Saints in the second quarter.
Since joining the Cowboys, Gramatica has made four of six field-goal attempts. He made a 24-yard kick in the third quarter against the Saints.
Parrish gets look
Free safety Tony Parrish, who was picked up off waivers from San Francisco, will get a close look this week.
Bill Parcells wanted to bring in a player with experience who wouldn't take away practice repetitions from rookie Patrick Watkins. Parrish, a nine-year veteran, has 30 career interceptions.
Parrish could provide help to a struggling position that gave up big plays against New Orleans. Parcells didn't know if Parrish could move into the starting lineup.
"I don't know that yet," Parcells said. "I'd have to take a look and see him in practice. I really don't know where he is."
Injury report
Fullback Oliver Hoyte (knee) left the game against the Saints, but Bill Parcells said he should be available for Saturday's game against Atlanta.
[Edit for puke fans: Yes, the Skins suck this year. Carry on.]
