So I got a new Compaq but I have two hard drives with a bunch of files I want to move to the new PC. The new PC is serial ATA except for the CD Drive. the old hard drives are IDE. One of my old hard drives is currently plugged into the IDE cable that's also going to the CD drive, but the PC isn't recognizing the new(old) drive at all. it runs fine but doesn't think the hard drive I plugged in exists. Do you think it could be jumper settings? The (old) drive was the master drive on my old machine, but I didn't mess with the jumpers at all when it was moved. If it was jumper issues, wouldn't it recognize the drive and try to run off it?

Make sure the jumper on the drive is set to CS (Cable Select) and give that a shot.

Each IDE interface can have up to two drives. One will be the master, the other the slave. CS doesn't always work.

Look at what the CD-ROM drive is, I would bet its jumper is set at master. Change your new (old) drive to slave and you should be good. You can also get another ribbon cable and put it on another IDE interface as well.

Go into the BIOS or CMOS and make sure the IDE controllers/devices are set to "auto"

More than likely, since you have a SATA drive by default the IDE's are "Off".
