"Does not possess the sexual characteristics of a woman" ... they chose these words rather than "possesses the sexual characteristics of a man", so this is probably not a male competing as a woman, but that the competitor had genetic abnormalities.
The International Amateur Athletic Federation and International Olympic Committee have debated this issue for years, as due to genetic factors females can show Y chromosomal material. Gender testing started in the 60s, but the Sydney Olympics stopped the practice.

How about a simple question, can you make a human sundial? Could you bear children? Can you, if you wanted to, piss upwards?

Yup ... there used to be more to gender testing than examining the 'naughty bits'. But the Olympics no longer perform the genetics test because it wasn't reliable.
"At the Atlanta Olympic Games, apparently 1 in 400 females failed the gender test, but with further testing were "reinstated" as females."

didn't read the article  is this a dna test? if so, a sex change operation wouldn't change the dna? wouldn't it be the sex at birth that counted?
can't see how going from man to woman would be benificial if it somehow removed testosterone? I think I'm getting sick now :puke: (misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=26#)
