View Full Version : What Attracted You to ES?

Why did you choose ES? What was it that brought you to THIS site, rather than another 'Skins messageboard?

Just curious.

I found it back in 2002 as well. It was the perfect place to get my daily Redskins fix. I didnt get a chance to join until years later because you couldnt use a yahoo email account but I really didnt care. I was on here every day several times a day. I almost wish sometimes that the Redskins did not buy this team because we have so many posters on here now that dont bring much to the table. :2cents: Its the best sports site on the web.

Bang's Dallas Cowboy cartoon from back in the day (Hoedown, iirc) was my initial visit.

But when CrazyZeb started putting together videos of preseason games that I couldn't watch because I was in TN, that's when I became hooked. :)

I remember my early posts... basically getting smacked around by the vets, and rightfully so. It was an intimidating place back then. I wonder if the newbs still think it is?

I was always looking for Redskins news and information and stumbled across the site during Spurrier's tenure. At first, not being a big computer/internets/message board kind of guy, I just read for news. After a little while, I came to realize how many people were here that knew a ton more than I did about the Redskins and started reading the threads more and taking in as much info as possible. The features were nice, especially the Doc Walker interviews (I do miss the candid, non watered down interviews such as the Doc ones) but the people drew me in. After about 6 months of just reading, I got up the courage to start posting and once I discoverd the tailgate, too, it was all over, I was hooked.

I will say, as much as I miss a lot of the features like the content laden interviews, the ticker, ect, the people were what brought me here, kept me here and why I'm still here today. I can honestly say, even outside of the real life friendships I've made because of this community, my view point of the world has been enhanced by being here just by virtue of exposure to so many view points, backgrounds and different kinds of people. I've learned a lot here, made new friends and the ES tailgates are just plain crazy. You've never been tailgating until you've been to an ES tailgate.

I can honestly say, for all the bitching that goes around, for all the grandstanding, I still enjoy and appreciate the hell out of this place. :2cents:

Edit: oh yeah, Bangs cartoons helped a lot, too

I was searching redskins.com and found the community section, and then the message board. I liked the intensity, the brotherhood, and the level of expertise. I also liked the rules that encourage a competitive banter but restrict vulgarity. Basically, I understood this place to be much more "professional" than all the other dime-a-dozen message boards out there. I was right.

I came because skins4eva, a best friend from H.S. told me about this amazing Redskins mecca. And he was right...

I stayed because of Tailgate, the cast of characters, and especially because of Tony, Mark and John.

I like the 'Redskins a lot, don't get me wrong, but I love this place. The people here mean a lot more to me than the 'Skins per se. :)

<sigh> another drawback to the merger.Yeah, those crabcakes were to die for. Another thing I miss is the theme music going in the background, but I guess some people found it kind of repetitive...

In any case, Ignatius J. was my roommate in college and he had discovered Extremeskins in the early days. I mostly lurked until I was back in Virginia - I guess I felt like I had something to say when I could actually watch all the Redskins games on TV ... After the 2003 season, I got into political messageboards on some other sites, and that's probably what really sucked me into the Tailgate and got me completely hooked on the site.

I was in Argentina as a volunteer English teacher for a summer and, because it was Gibb's first season I NEEDED to listen to any snippet of news that came during the off-season. I chose Extremeskins because umm, it was the quickest website to load on a slow connection. If I had been to the internet cafes sooner, I may have chosen another site :).

The 2005 Annual Off-Season Hottie Draft:silly:

Actually it guess it was during this past off-season, all the FA signings and having it linked to Skins.com. It took a while for me to get it set up because of computer user error but I finally got it squared away.

Also as my name states where I'm at, I always have a great time at Fed-ex since I only get there once every couple years....I go to the Philly game every year and to get to see them play at home along with the Nation is great so I figured getting on the message board and being able to talk Skins with Skins fans is great.

Otherwise I'm stuck hearing how A.J. Feely was a better QB when he played well in McNabb's absence a couple years ago and now how Garcia is better than McNabb for their offense:doh: . I'm a fan of all the other Philly teams and it's just a sad, sad world for me up here....the birds being so good for so long and the other teams letting talent like Iverson get traded or letting them walk like a lot of Flyers.

For me, it was the level of discourse and the range of subjects back in the day. Back then we had threads on everything from Cold Fusion, to the Marx Brothers, to Politics, and everything under the sun. There was also a great deal of mutual respect that for the most part flowed across this board. That's what made this board my home for Redskins stuff more than anything. There was also a great sence of humor attached to the intelligence and an ability to laugh at oneself. Besides, once you got through the hazing period, learned the handshake (which for many took months and work with an OT), and proved you could sing Hail to the Redskins backwards and forwards in three different languages and in perfect pitch... man, have we lowered the acceptance standards.

Oh yeah and the food...

Its coming...lots of work. I have to send you some pics. We put in a loft, finished the insulation & vapor barrier, of course the wood stove is in, put 1x6 T&G on the ceiling of the front porch.

Lastly we scored Bruce hardwood floor for free from a friend who is building a house. I'm not sure we should have put that in considering the conditions up there but I think after we insulate under the cabin it should hold up. We are almost finished installing the floor and it was the hardest work so far. My back hurt for a week after driving in 2500 flooring nails. Next time I'm not using a manual floor nailer

Petey.... come on dude :) Back in the day.... it was both Art and I ripping on trolls. Heck, Art and I even got into a few ourselves. That's where I got some of my notoriety :)

Once I spent my time building ES.... the quantity of posting reduced significantly and it eroded my debating (and researching) skills. However, Art's role as a moderator didn't prohibit him from carrying on :)

In fact, I was probably the first Redskins "newshound" on the TSN board.... I believe Buddha then took over for me.... and the role has expanded as the torch has been passed from successor to successor.

I know Buddha has acknowledged me recently in a thread... and I meant to reply that it's funny.... I haven't thought about him in a long time (nor have I seen him post) but I did that day.... and a few hours later he replies to one of my posts.

I'm pretty sure it was less then a year when you opened up this bad boy, so it could have been when you were fed up with TSN, and working on this place. Remember, I was the guy always posting with the stoned smilies. ;) when we had them here. I see Buddha lurking from time to time. He was the best fact finder back in the day. I remember game days in his chat room with PCS, Blondie, OM, and a few other regulars. What a blast.

I miss all the old guys too, and the feel of the place from the first two years or so.

I spent 2 full years on TSN before I opened ExtremeSkins. Heck, I was unemployed for my first full year... I was online all the time :) Though when I began working on ExtremeSkins.. I didn't post nearly as much.

Actually, the timing couldn't have been better. I didn't aim to create ExtremeSkins as a refuge from the TSN wasteland.... I built it as an alternative :) The timing couldn't have been more perfect.

As despite being superior software... more graphically stimulating... and TSN falling into a hostile-troll takeover... I remember who reluctant people were making the switch from their old stomping grounds.

If it's one thing I've learned about the internets..... people are pretty loyal to their online communities.

Originally I was just looking for a Redskins board that got a lot of "action" meaning that people were constantly posting/replying. Once I was here I noticed the amazing features, and how every month or so something brand new and just as awesome would appear on the homepage. All the features left me with no choice but to recommend it to everyone I knew that was a Redskins fan.

That's great to hear. It was awesome creating those features.... you still can't get half that stuff on the internet right now.

Does anybody remember the automated NFL GM draft software we built and used for 1 season? I loved that software. It's a shame all of it is just sitting idle.

Yeah, I came to be the best butthead here but I have to work so hard now.

Seems the food was the biggest draw, though.

Blondie,

Still got one dish here but I guess you won't wash it now.

Oh, I will still wash.

It just costs you more now.

I was on redskins.com looking for highlights of the 9-7 win over the Bears and I saw the link and thought "oh what the hell, I post on so many forums, maybe this one will be decent"

That's right Iheart!!! I came because it was training camp 2004, I was stuck at a boring summer internship and I started surfing the web in search of the coolest Skins site I could find.

When I stumbled across this place, I was in awe...I still am.

ExtremeSkins just happened to be the first Fan board I came across. The people that post here got me hooked and kept me coming back (pre merger with the Redskins). Although I don't post much, and I don't have a huge post count, I still feel like part of a community even though I hardly know anyone here personally (but I feel like I do after reading a lot of your words, and stopping by the tailgate this year for the Dallas game.)

I think when it comes right down to it, Google got me here but it was the people/quality of posts/information that kept me here. I couldn't see myself anywhere else. :2cents:

Having spent most of the previous 10 years packing my stuff and getting shipped off to various parts of the world (usually the worst parts of the world), when I finally returned to a stable home in NC, I couldn't help but start pining for my roots.

And my roots meant Redskins football.

I'd spent the first 20 years of my life in Northern Virginia (Alexandria to be exact), same street, same house, and the Redskins were simply another constant of my youth. I vividly remember opening a Christmas present in 1968 (I was six) and bursting into tears because Santa had brought me a Green Bay Packers jacket, not the Redskins version I'd hoped for. My mom explained that Santa 'must have been out of the Redskins ones' :) Although it was my Dad who really got me hooked into the Sunday ritual of sitting down and watching the George Allen-inspired 'Ramskins' and 'Over the Hill Gang', my fandom soon surpassed his. By the time Gibbs came to town, it was me demanding we change the Sunday TV channel (and back then, trust, me, the DC area didn't have much in the way of programming - other than the Redskins, there was cheesy Channel 20 on most of the time, home of my other favorite program, the 'Sir Graves Ghastly' horror movie show.....). So Redskins football became a Sunday staple.

So when I got geographically close enough to start getting back into my Redskins, it was only natural that I stumble onto this place. All it took was a yahoo or google search, and BAM. Paydirt. I worked night shift as a critical care nurse around that time, so I had long stretches where I wanted to sleep, but just couldn't. This place filled the void. I pretty quickly found out, the place was damn cool. Before I knew it, I was hooked. One day, Die Hard was looking for some help with a project, I volunteered, and next thing I knew, I was neck-deep in this thing called extremeskins.

I've made a lot of friends here, and like a lot of folks will tell you, I've learned a lot too. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Theres probably no other medium anywhere that brings as diverse a group to a discussion as an energetic internet messageboard. Where else would old dudes like moi engage in meaningful conversation with 17 year olds? No where else. Thats just a simple fact.

Plus, I dig the chicks here.

It sounds trite. It sounds sentimental. Hell, it sounds ridiculous. But this place is more than a swatch of bandwidth on someone's server. Its got a life, a pulse, a feel, an internet soul all its own. Warts and all, I'm still proud to come here every day.

Hail to the Redskins, and hail to www.extremeskins.com

I was one of the guys who used to mock the cowpie fans on the old ESPN and tsn boards, it used to get pretty wild on there and one day a guy named Art told me about a guy named Tony (Die hard) who was building a board and he told me to go check out this message board they were starting where we could actually talk about football without having to deal with morons taking up the bandwidth. It turned out that Tony was playing football for ateam called the oakville longhornsa who played my team in a national championship. I was working in the bush as a GPS technologist so I was away a lot.

I got used to chatting with guys like our resident conspriacy theorist at the time INDYSKINS, our military guy, MICK and of course Art and Diehard.guys like buddha and blde who had a good fotball knowledge and in the tail gate we talked baout scince, politics and religion without getting into perosnla attacks. It was the best site ever. I played semi pro and used to get ideas for fundraising, music for psyching up and stuff here.

I have accessed this board from a mountain side via satelite phone and laptop from a northen alberta mountain and an island in the NWT, Ive accessed it from an Indian reserve in northwest alberta via snail net and Ive always loved this place because it helps me know whats going on with the skins and the NFL no matter where I am. I still like most of the people here even some of the really new ones and the tailgate has always been a great place to have debates(actually its the only place that HASNT changed all that much).

I love this place I just wish some of the newbs would show a little more restraint when posting.

anyway I just needed to edit to say thanks diehard.

Ah yes. The party at Buddah's. Wings, beer, water, ( Blondie),the poppers, ( long live those things indeed), and the shag carpeting with wood paneling on the walls. For the record books, it wasn't me who spilled and put the spot on the carpet. :paranoid: Place was a blast wasn't it? Good thing we always cleaned up after ourselves. :halo: :D

Utah showed me the place sometime in early 2001 and after many months of looking through the window, I walked in the door. Glad to have my old chair follow me around as the place grew and blew out the walls to make additions. :)

The chance to interact with fellow Redskin fans about a wide variety of topics, whether it be Redskin football in the Stadium or music, babes, movies and politics in the Tailgate. I definitely recommend this site for all the Redskins fans out there.
