Cross your fingers for me folks. :wish: Looks like the space shuttle is gonna pay my town a visit.

I was a kid when it landed here the last time (1982) and it was very cool. Today if they choose the early landing time 3:27 mst, it will fly directly over my house at a pretty low alititude...ie visible. I am so hoping that it does. I get some pics, and put them here later if I can.

"But it became more and more apparent Thursday that White Sands Space Harbor may be the place where the shuttle touches down.

If the shuttle does land at White Sands, it could touch down at 3:27 p.m. or 5:02 p.m. today. If it lands at 3:27 p.m., its descent path could pass directly over Las Cruces."

Awesome, I hope you get to see it. The only problem with White sands is that its just a runway in the desert. There aren't good facilities.

Regardless, I hope it happens for you!

There's a lot more out at WSMR than people think including 2 nuclear reactors. It's a very high tech facility. I was out there about a month ago quail hunting and we drove right by the Space Shuttle training facility. It fairly impressive.

The only real issue is money and time because they have to ship the crane that lifts the shuttle and puts it on top of a 747 that they use to fly it back to florida. The issue with the dust and brakes that caused trouble in '82 has been mitigated.

LOL...my uncle is gonna be ticked if that happends. Both my aunt and uncle worked at the space center out at WSMR for years (my aunt was a secretary for one of the big wigs, and no idea what my uncle did...I was always told "don't ask") and just moved to Virginia 2 years ago...and NOW the shuttle may land there

It feels like you're on another planet wandering through the desert out there. Oh, and there are these crazy black beetles that burrow in the sand and come out at night ... the girl I was with was not amused.

It was cool waking up to stealth fighters flying around though - definitely a cool place to visit.

Well they scrapped Florida #1 things are looking up for us. Here's what Houston was singing to the astronauts...

"Flight controllers in Houston, trying their hand at holiday songwriting, sent the Discovery crew in their daily messages lyrics to their version of the song, "Let it Snow."

"Oh, the weather at KSC is frightful. But at White Sands, it's so delightful. And since we have to land. Land White Sands. Land White Sands. Land White Sands," it said."

I wonder if the guys radioed back "Houston, YOU have a problem. With those lyrics".

I am totally stoked, got my camera and I'm driving as close as they'll let us get the second I get outta work.

Those are called "stink bugs" :D. And they do. Definetly erie out there at night. On a full moon, it's bright as day.

I've got some buddies that have those "don't ask" jobs.

I spent the night in LC on a trip from LA to Jacksonville via I-10 in '90. couldn't tell you anything about it though

California 1 just scrapped...COME ON RAIN IN FLORIDA!

Small desert city. Nice people, no traffic things are pretty inexpensive. Missing some things, but there are big cities reasonably close for those. Probably similar in lifestyle to your beloved Carolina mountains.:)

sounds like you like it there. If the skins play in Arizona, are you going? That's a out of town game i would attend.

st. pete is a small town too with enough culture to satisfy. I'm done with big stinkin' cities. so much so that I won't visit them in foreign countries as a tourist either. I've seen (and built) enough man made **** to last several lifetimes, natural scenery is far more impressive. there is something about being in the woods that soothes. must remind me of partying down by the potomac

I went to Phoenix for last years game. Great time!

Couldn't agree more about scenery. Mother nature flat out kicks our ass when it comes to making pretty ****. You'd be amazed how soothing the desert can be with a million stars all around (cheap eagles reference) . Plus, I have the mountains and forest pretty close too. I've lived in NY, LA, DC and Albuquerque. I'll never live in a big city again. Don't mind visiting on occasion though.

CRAP. Always rains in Florida when I'm on vacay. :(

4:20 p.m. - In Mission Control, Houston, the poll has been conducted and the Flight Team has given the go for deorbit burn.

"Believe it or not, we're going to give you the go for the deorbit burn," said Capcom Ken Ham to Mark Polansky and his crew aboard Discovery. "We have worked this one as hard as we can and we are pretty confident we are going to keep you clear of clouds and rain."

So after an afternoon of very dynamic weather conditions, Discovery will indeed be returning home to Kennedy Space Center. Deorbit burn will take place at 4:26 p.m. and landing is set for 5:32 p.m.

that sucks for you, guess I'll go outside listen for the sonic booms, hopefully there won't be any cigarette boats tearing up the intercoastal and I'll be able to hear them
