I did a search and nothing specific came up
What can we expect next season with the return of Pierson Prioleau and his role as safety and special teams. Prioleau has always been a strong special teams player and is one of Greg William's players brought from Buffalo. My take is that Prioleauis not a permanent solution to our secondary but should we prefer him at Safety over Springs, Fox or Vincent?

He can play corner and safety. We need all the help that we can get.

Timely thread. Been thinking about this guy.
I'd not be surprised at all to see him start alongside Taylor. I have a funny feeling we were going to see a that THIS year, with AA used as a hybrid LB/S.
I think we'll know fairly early in FA if this is the case. With safety being such a glaring area of concern in '06, it would make sense the team would be targeting that position in FA right off the bat. If FA starts and a week or two go by and they do NOT appear in a big hurry to bag a clear starting-caliber safety, to me it will be a sign they may think they have that guy already on their roster.

but see, theyll need to know the status of springs injury. if its bad, then moving him to saftey wont be a good idea. if they know sooner than later, theyll announce hes gonna be a saftey, and if not, theyll have to fire up redskins one and go find the next big guy.

Losing PP, was just as devasting to our defense as losing Springs the first 5 games IMO
he did so many different things

I think Pierson Prioleau should be the starting Safety, with Fox coming in for some packages. I would also like to see a young safety added in the later rounds if they don't think Doughty can play in the league.

Springs to me isn't a viable starting safety at his age and with the injuries starting to pile up. I'd be shocked if GW has any real plans to move Shawn there.
And anyway ... we were talking about Prioleau. :)
As I said, I have a sneaking suspicion your "next big guy" may already be on the roster, just under the radar at the moment due to his freak injury on the opening kickoff of the opening game.

I was hoping to hear someone else say that. Can anyone give good insight on what his strengths and weaknesses are and maybe what he looked like in Buffalo. With Clark starting last year and the injury this year, I haven't been able to make an assesment.

I'd really like to see Pierson start at Safety along side ST. I think our defensive secondary would be pretty solid with this, and I'd also like to see Fox alternate with Prioleau. And... I think they should give Doughty a shot at a few packages on the defense against New York. It's stupid to not let him try, especially since his special teams play is getting much better. If he botches some plays than that will be a huge indicator of his role on the team.

no one is ever 100% the year after tearing an ACL.

It's good that he tore it so early though.

Carson Palmer doesn't do nearly as much running as Pierson will be inclined to do

Let's see how well he comes back from this injury then we find where he fits. Starter, backup or Special teamer.

Does anyone think that we should really be banking on a thirty-year old defensive back coming off a major knee injury?

I thought PP broke his leg.....maybe I am remembering wrong.
As I said in another post...Pierson was going to start at FS
Which he will do next year. With Nate Clements at CB
Clements, Rogers at CB....PP and ST at Safeties (smoot as a nickel
Done

Done.

couldn't agree more. pp provides excellent depth and the ability to start in spot duty, but is better suited to play on obvious passing downs as a cover s. i'd be very cautious to go into a season with him as our starter as it weakens our bench/flexibility.

Yes, I agree with this, and I've been talking about this quite a bit in the draft threads. I think PP is our best depth at safety and Vernon Fox may be the runner up to start if he is back. But, relying on guys like Troy Vincent or even flirting with the idea of Springs moving there I think is kind of scary. Troy Vincent got hurt in his third game (I think) playing in Washington. And, Shawn Springs got hurt numerous times and is now hurt again. Springs and Vincent are great, and I truley like those guys a lot, but they're old and too injury prone to be starting a sucha crucial position. I think addressing a safety need in the draft is something we MUST DO, especially since we aren't into giving Reed Doughty any shot what so ever.

imo, in the age of fa & the salary cap, a team has to judge and determine in which basket to place its eggs. the salary cap prevents teams from keeping viable depth at every position so there are some instances where the backup is someone that is not an nfl calibre player.
this is what bit us in the arse this season...it happened to new england a year or two ago when they were forced to use troy brown at cb...it happens...someone tell me who starts at qb if peyton goes down...yes, indy has put all of their eggs in his basket and would be rightfully criticized if he were to ever go down as their season would be over.
injuries are a part of the game. fa and the salary cap are also. what our fo needs to figure out (and every other fo is challenged by this crap shoot as well) is what positions are your strongest, where do you need quality depth, spread around cheap/young talent & keep your fingers crossed.

Is it just me, or will this be the FIRST year that we actually WANT silence when FA starts? I think this current team has more potential than any since the last SB.

If Prioleau can come back and regain his form from the first two seasons I expect good things. IMO, the guy is head and shoulders above Fox on any depth chart. Springs, Vincent, Prioleau, Doughty and possibly also Fox but doubtful IMO. Prioleau adds genuine QUALITY depth. We should be very deep at the position in 2007-2008.

Until we have some sense of how far along Pierson's recovery is, we can't make an informed judgment on what he might be able to provide in September. Neither can the team ... so they have to be prepared either way.
If they're convinced by the time FA rolls around that he'll be healthy enough to pick up where he left of in '05, perhaps the safety position isn't as desperate as many think, particularly given Fox as an emergeny guy.
If they are unable to make the call though, unless they are totally convinced Fox (or even Doughty) are starter material, they're probably going to need to find a legit starter earlier than later in FA. My guess is we'll know in the first couple days of FA how well they believe Prioleau is healing.

that's a bold statement my friend as, again, we'll be one injury away from relying on borderline nfl talent to start. please don't tell me you're counting on springs to be healthy for 16 games & please don't rely too heavily on prioleau returning to form so quickly...usually takes 1+ years to regain form...common knowledge & please, troy vincent is older than_____insert your own joke.

I think that PP will be fine once he gets back to gamespeed. He is a solid starter and fast. He is getting every rep at safety this week and with the addition of Landry we should still be disruptive. Applying pressure from the front seven and Rocky in coverage are bigger concerns at this point. I have confidence in PP. VT's FINEST!

Prioleau is good at best. He can't let receivers get behind him like he did against the Eagles. He has to hawk the ball better than that.
