'Tis the season to celebrate -- but beware! One too many glasses of eggnog at the office holiday party, or a bit more bubbly than you anticipated on New Year's Eve, and you're likely to find yourself feeling less than cheerful the day after.
Want to prevent a hangover from dampening your holiday spirits? Read on to discover tried-and-true remedies that work, new methods meant to halt hangovers before they strike, and why too much alcohol causes so much misery in the first place.
Hangovers Explained
If, while nursing a horrific hangover, you've ever asked yourself, "How a couple of seemingly harmless drinks could have led to such misery?" consider this: "Alcohol is poison. The hangover is your body recuperating from being poisoned by alcohol and its metabolites," Aaron White, PhD, assistant research professor at Duke University Medical Center, tells WebMD. Symptoms vary, but can include one or all of the following:
Raging headaches. "Alcohol intoxication seems to produce dilation of the blood vessels that surround the brain, which may contribute to the headache in some people. Alcohol also has an effect on some neurotransmitters, increasing levels of serotonin or histamine that may trigger headaches," says Bruce Hetzler, PhD, psychology professor at Lawrence University.
Dehydration. Ever wake up after a night of heavy alcohol consumption and wonder why your tongue is stuck to the roof of your mouth? Dehydration, also partly to blame for headaches and nausea, is the culprit. It causes excess urination by stopping the release of a hormone that helps the body hold on to fluid. Also sweating, vomiting, and diarrhea that sometimes accompany excess drinking can cause a person to become dehydrated. The signs of dehydration can be dizziness, lightheadedness, thirst, and weakness -- symptoms that are felt during a hangover.
Fatigue. The day after a night of drinking and revelry, you're probably wiped out. That's because alcohol disrupts sleep. Alcohol can work as a sedative to help promote sleep. But alcohol has an effect on sleep quality. "People who drink alcohol tend to have sleep maintenance insomnia -- you wake up too soon and then you can't get back to sleep," White says. That's not the only problem.

A Hangover is withdrawl from alcohol. The only way to effectively "cure" one is the drink more...and ween off of it.
Treating the symptoms will only do so much...

Only drink the highest quality vodka and mix with fruit juice preferably oj and you shouldn't get a hangover, but if you do: take vitamin B complex and C and a quart of water before going to bed. In the morning more B&C vitamins, and drink OJ with a raw egg (for the cystine). I also had success with taking tylenol before going to bed

The only real way to ensure a Hangover free holiday has already been mentioned.... DON'T DRINK. That's the policy I tend to go with and I'll tell you it's been effective 100% of the time that I've tried it.

Ouch! Tylenol and booze are a definite no no. They're both bad for your liver. At least one of em makes it worth it. :) Seriously though, you should never combine the two. I quite taking tylenol years ago. Ibu's work just fine.

You're correct that I am not a proponent of any chemical that causes an altered state of mind. As I've said before, the feeling of being drunk, and my understanding of the feeling of being high (if it's anything like what certain prescription pain meds do) is one that I do not care to indulge in. In fact it generally puts me in a place where I tend to start panicing, thank you very much.
As for my "bitterness"... it has nothing to do with failing to be drunk or high on a regular basis hog. It's causes are much broader and not as easily cured.

Amen to that, my brotha!
But, for those of you who must imbibe, drink water before you go to bed. From what I understand, it will counter the effects. But, it probably would be in your best interest long term to avoid it altogether and just drink water or soda.

Thank you, stwasm. I've just never really understood the apparently great enjoyment some people seem to get from drinking to excess. Especially since I have never really found much alcohol that tastes very good to me. I tend to prefer soda or something else sweet and/or fruity over the vast majority of the alcohol available at most parties.
Now if somebody has a really nicely aged mead, that might be a different story; but I haven't find that at many parties these days.

I haven't decided if I am going to drink any this weekend, so don't know if I'll need a hangover remedy, ( though being the old bartender I am, I've always recommended a little hair of the dog. So to speak).

Hahaha.
My weekend is going to shake down like this:
Friday: Drank b/c its Friday.
Saturday: Drinking during the late Skins game and UFC fight
Sunday: New Years Eve party
Monday: Full day of bowl games including my alma mater in the Gator Bowl. The fun starts at 10 am. Yes, on a Monday. :)
Tuesday: Rest. Rehydrate.

I tend to drink a ****ton of water before I do any major drinking. It's also a good idea to drink plenty of water afterwards, too. But I like to do so before, because sometimes you're too drunk to remember to drink water after the fact.

i just thought it was kind of funny that somehow the word abstinence has become synonymous with sex but the definition actually uses the word alcohol.

You know...the only thing worse than a bad drunk is someone who doesn't drink, but takes every opportunity to lord their choice over everyone else like it somehow makes them superior. You don't drink, we get it.
