A few months ago I was accosted on my way home from work on a sunday morning at 6am, 4 vagrants attempted to steal my laptop and beat me up on the train platform. Its funny because as some of you know I am not a small man, I am about 6-4 and weig in at around 340 pounds. anyway long story short I explained the facts of life and demonstrated some physics to them and retained my laptop.
The next day I had to go to the hospital to identify two of them and I was informed that as one was a minor his parents would be pressing assault charges. I had camera eveidence from the transit people that they started the altercation by grabbing my laptop bag and throwing punches, 3 of them were punching me, I knocked one down with a punch and was kicking him while he was on the ground and then I literally threw one off the platform wwf style and his injuries were extensive so they claimed that I DEFENDED MYSELF WITH MORE THAN NECESSARY FORCE. key word was defending, nobody disputed that they were attempting to rob me or beat me up but simply that as their injuries were extensive I must have used excessive force.
after stewing about this for too long my lawyers finally threatened to file a civil suit and the parents of the druggie backed off bt the fact that I even had to go through this speaks volumes about our society. I culd not believe that the parents stuck up for their crackhead sonn when they found out he was injured in the attempted ROBBERY of a normal citizen!

Well, at least you got off. In the U.S., your wages probably would have been taken for ten years. For goodness sakes, will someone please think about the children!!!

You could retitle the thread "Only in California" or "Only in Massachusetts" and have it be the same thing.
Sorry to hear that dude. At least you're safe and have your laptop.

Thats funny cause I live in the same province as you and about 6 months ago I caught someone breaking into my car for the second time in a few weeks and I beat him silly and the RCMP simply said I was within my rights to defend my property and that was that.

lol I wrote about this the day after it happened on my blog, I worked as a security officer at the time and because of my background they were saying it was "unfair" I countered by asking what if this was a woman or smaller man? either way I am grumpy about feeling bad for defending myself. oh and on a side note a cop actually told me that I should have goiven them my laptop to avoid a fight! LOL
heres my blog entry
"So I'm on my way home from work this morning and as Im at the 1st street station, 4 guys walk up to me and start eyeing up my laptop case, these guys were dressed kinda grubby and were acting weird, talking loud and standing close to me even though there was lots of room on the platform. They were fairly large and looked to be well fed but dirty. There have been a few swarming attacks on Ctrains lately and a friend of mine was recently beaten up and had his PSP stolen so luckily I was prepared and paying attention if they had caught me by surprise it could have been a lot worse. They started whispering to eachother and got really close to me.
When the first guy reached for my laptop case I swung my backpack and hit him in the face, I then dropped my backpack and my laptop case on top of it, the other guys hesitated and I started kicking the first guy but turned so that I faced the other two with my backpack behind me. The one guy chrged toward me and I grabbed him as he went by and threw him off the platform onto the tracks, the thrid guy took the opportunity to punch at my head but only hit me in the chest and shoulder a few times and I turned back and threw a few punches of my own but the fourth guy managed to hit me in the side of the head a few times (thank god I have a thick skull) which pissed me off more than anything, it was kind of a blur for what I thiink was a few minutes and while the three of us were trading punches , the guy I threw off the platform got up and reached for my stuff, I thnk they hit hit me more than normal because I was trying to stay near my stuff on the ground. I stepped on my laptop bag and buddy let go because an intelligent person who I almost forgot to thank yelled out"oh **** its the cops" as the Train arrived. The Train driver announced that transit security and CPS had been called and were enroute and the losers all scattered, I had a bloody nose and some scratches to go with a swollen hand and some bumps on my head and some bruises but nothing major or disfiguring. The transit cops came and took my statement and that of the guy who called them on the help box but CPS didnt come.
I was tired, sore, and realised that I need to get back into shape, I almost ran out of steam halfway through and would have been beaten severely if I hadnt gone on the offensive. what galls me is that Transit cops know that train stations are unsafe early in the morning and yet I have never seen a transit cop in the AM downtown! somebody is going to have to be beaten or killed before something gets done. If I read one more story about the benevolent homeless Ill ****ing lose it."
then the next day I wrote
" So the final tally is some lumps bruises and a sprained or broken hand for Ryan, hospitalisation with unknown injuries for vagrant # 1 and 2 and I guess we will find out about the others soon enough. makes typing a serious ***** though. I got a call from a constable to come down and identify two of the individuals who possibly were part of the group who attacked me, they are at the lougheed, I think its probably the one I threw off the platform and the one I bootscrewed. I feel no pity or remorse, they asked and they receievd. I do have to thank them for helping me to remember why I hate vagrants so much. seriously I get so sick and tired hearing about homeless people and how decent they are, I work downtown and the crackheads have taken over, maybe there are some decent homeless but they are overshadowed by the aggressive scum now.
I am not realy comfotbale right now, my head hurts and my hand hurts but the look on the chumps face when I punched him was priceless. I too some pretty good shots but I gave some too, I will need a new work shirt though because my bloody nose stained up the one pretty good.
I still cannot believe that the advice I was given by law enforcement was to hand over my laptop! **** that maybe if the city was gonna reimburse me! seriously this city is going to hell in a handbasket, when people are afraid to go home on the damn train?"
funny I'm not normally a vigialnte type, i believe firmly in law and order and I try to always follow rules even when I dont have to, I always wait my turn in line etc etc.

oh and sean when I lived in Northern AB I hammered out a turd that was in the midst of stealing my buddies stereo and the Rcmp were the same, its just since I moved here to Calgary, seriously its like the vagrants have some sort of free pass.

The way you tell that story, I probably would be in prison by now because I would have attacked them when they were standing too close to me and whispering to eachother...hell give me a couple more months and I may have been carrying a 1911 colt .45 and pulled that on em. Luckily things like that dont happen often where I live in AZ.

6'4" 340 lbs and he calls himself a "normal" citizen.
I think if I'm them I wait for the next person to come along to try to mug them.
It's nice to know your criminals are as stupid as ours, and that you're OK, of course.

LOL, aside from a being a bit bigger than average I am pretty much a normal citizen, I don't use my size to push my way into the front of the line or stuff like that. I try to act correctly as that is the way I was raised. Honestly I know that being Bigger than average and being a trained boxer and athlete mean I have to be careful but my point is what if its just some other guy with no self defence traing or size? Worse yet what if its a woman?
I really couldn't believe that they were attempting to rob me either, as Rick james says "cocaines a hell of a drug." I was horrified that I felt a sense of satisfaction when the police recited the injuries I inflicted on the vagrants but I got over it when I realised that they would have done far worse to me if given the chance (there have been some swarming attacks here in calgary) I honestly could not believe that there would even be an inquiry let alone a possibility of jail time for me!
I also could not believe that those parents were charging me. they needed to thank me as their crack head son was forced to get help, and they wondr why their son is that way with such permissive parents "its ok to rob and steal but not to defend yourself" seriously when did the world get so strange?

Glad to hear you came out on top.
I think if it happened in the US though, those parents would have kept the case going. It's rediculous really in either situation.

Awesome Ryman....good for you. Someone decides to assault another individual, they get what they deserve. You taught them a very valuable lesson :)

Good going bro. Those idiots got what they deserved. And hopefully you will too...a lack of any prosecution.

Ryman, glad to hear you kicked the snot out of the losers.
I had an experience like this about 4 years ago. I was at a small town bar where I grew up with a bunch of buddies. When closing time rolled around this freakshowed who just moved into town tried starting something with my buddies. While I was holding one of my buddies back this dude pulls a knife on us and said he was going to kill us all. I turned around and the dude was a few feet away from me, and since I was drunk I tackled him on the sidewalk. Not a smart move by any means, but when I was on top of him I kept thinking this dude is going to knife me in the kidneys!! So I grabbed his hair and started beating his head in the sidewalk.
My buddies jumped on me to pull me off because they thought I was going to kill him. By this time the bar ower comes out with a .44 and fires a few rounds in the air, gotta love small towns, lol.
Well about a half an hour later the cops show up and take the guy to jail.
A couple days go by and one of the cops said I was lucky, I asked him for what? He said that I cracked the dudes skull and that if he had brain damage his family could sue me!!
So he pulls a knife I defend myself and my friends and I can get sued!!
I guess defending yourself is a bad idea now adays.

I just hope that the ultra-violent ways of the Canadiens don't spread southward. Its common knowledge that its their love of violent video games, rap music, and their corrupt decadent culture that makes nearly all Canadiens extremely dangerous.
