"Why did my father have to die when and how he did?"
That's depressing. :(

Sorry, but given the opportunity to get one straight answer from The Powers that Be; that would be the question.
The lack of a straight-forward answer for that question is what drove me away from the Lutheran Church, and every other organized religion that I turned to looking for an answer. It's largely why I believe that organized religion is a joke. Everyone has a right to believe and to worship as they please but my father's death really opened my eyes to what organized religion could and couldn't provide for me in my life.

Without getting too personal, would you mind elaborating on the circumstances surrounding your fathers death that bring you to the question you would have?
Or based on the fact that your father's death is a major moment in your life is there some part of your relationship that made this the way it is?
If this is too personal, please just let us know.

I'm on your ignore list, but I just want you to know that I think you are a very intellectual person. And while I disagree with 90% of what you say. I always enjoy reading, and respecting, what you have to say.
The tailgate would suck without you!!

No problem, bhayesp....
My father passed away on his 54th birthday from complications of skin cancer (melanoma) that had moved into his brain. He'd fought the Cancer for almost two years, never feeling sorry for himself, and until the last days of his life refusing to allow it to seriously change his life.
This man was the sort of person I could never be. Faithful to his family, his country, and his religion right up to the end. This was a man who turned down TWO separate potential "outs" and accepted the draft notice that sent him to Southeast-Asia because, as he put it..... "I didn't want someone else to go in my place and possibly never come back."
This is a man who came back from Vietnam and intended to dedicate his life to teaching young people technical skills (industrial arts). He got a Master's degree in Education and spent eight and a half years as a high school and junior high school Industrial Arts teacher.
During college he met (on a blind date) and fell in love with a young woman from Minnesota who had come east to teach elementary ed. at the parochial school attached to the Lutheran church he was an active member of.
As time went on he and my mother had three boys (I'm the oldest). No matter what work he was doing, my father always made sure we had the things we needed and a lot of what we wanted. Not necessarily everything we wanted but everything we needed. Even when it meant working 12-16 hours of Overtime a week. He also made sure to find the time to be involved in his son's lives and interests. Whether it was Paul's soccer games, Steven's baseball games, my Boy Scout events, or whatever else. His family always came first. He also instilled a sense of morality and ethics in each of us and helped us to learn and become the best we could be. That's probably part of why his sons currently hold 1 Assoc of Science degree, 1 Master's degree in Child Psychology, and (very soon) 1 PhD in Genetics/Microbiology.
My father was the sort of person who always did for somebody ELSE before he did anything for himself. The type of person who when they tell you they'll do something gets it done EARLY and UNDER budget whenever possible. He gave his time to his country, his family, his friends, and his church; but when it was almost time to start being able to do things for himself he was struck down by this terrible, whithering disease.
I'm sorry but if someone like HIM doesn't deserve the blessings and good things in life from his God, then I'm never going to deserve anything from that diety; and the sort of diety that doesn't reward His good and faithful servants isn't the sort that I have an interest in dealing with.

That's been an interesting point of discussion in the past. I would love to come down to the D.C. area and get a chance to see the 'Skins play at home. Unfortunately it's not likely to happen in the near future. Between my schedule for different events, the amount of money and time such a trip would cost, and the fact that the team hasn't been defending its home turf real well in recent years, I'm not sure how long it would be before I'd really seriously consider it.
As for tailgating.... probably not. As I've commented in the past, the social aspects of games are not what I really go for. My schedule is more along the lines of.... show up about 45-60 minutes before kickoff, watch the game until it's "over" (ie... no more hope of my team winning), then go home.

Sounds like what I do except during this VT season I used to arrive 2 hours before kickoff and wander around the empty stadium before the game started. Boo tailgating

MSF, what are your views on alcoholism and addiction?
I generally view them as a weakness in the individual. I know that there are often genetic components to these addictions, but I truly believe that the individual needs to be stronger and smarter than these things.
For example, one of my roommates has a history of alcoholism in his family. He CHOOSES not to drink AT ALL. I've known him for 14 years and I've NEVER seen him drink. He does this because he isn't comfortable that even a few drinks wouldn't turn him into an alcoholic. Would it?... probably not, but he isn't willing to take that chance considering his family background.

What is your opinion of the killers in school shootings? Evil maniacs that deserve to die, or mentally disabled victims of cultural shortcomings that should have gotten help?

I don't know about that. Three women is probably more than I want to think about being stranded with for the rest of eternity.
Don't bet that you'd love being on this end so much, KH. It's not all peaches and cream, let me tell you.
Not like you are going to have TV or internet. Yeah, but let's say (hypothetically)...one will get fat, one will get bitchy and the other will be dumb, so hard to choose. What if you just got stuck with 2, the dumb and the bitchy one? Give me the fat one every time if that is what I have to look forward to.
To the other point... I have no problems with being honest, even if it comes off as rude in other people's mind. Some people appreciate it, others don't. Well, that is not my problem, I am just telling the truth from my perspective.
EDIT: BTW - I am not into fat chicks at all, nor skinny boney women. Although some guys are, and that's up to them. I like women with a figure. A ten figure bank account... and maybe my usage of figure would be different. :)

A little bit of both, DGreen.
These school shootings are obviously horrible events that nobody would wish on even their worst enemies. Unfortunately there are a number of factors that contribute to them....
1. Total lack of security in schools. Obviously we don't want to turn our schools into jails, but let's get something straight.... 99% of the schools in this country have NO security whatsoever. Oh they may have nice old Mr. Jones who walks around with a security uniform on and a radio on his belt but he has no training and no means of enforcing anything. Besides, he obviously cannot be everywhere at once.
2. Lack of proper discipline in our schools. How many of these kids we see doing these things HAVEN'T been troublemakers of one sort or another? Yet these kids continue to simply be thrown back into the sea of potential victims called classmantes. I see public education as a PRIVILEDGE, not a right. If you choose to not want it, fine.... EXPELL THEM. If they don't want to be there, don't force them to be there. Most areas have alternative schooling systems for those individuals who cannot or won't get along in mainstream class situations.
3. Lack of parental involvement. I can't think of even one of these school shooters who has had what I would consider an appropriate home environment (2 interested and involved parents). They seem to come mostly from broken homes or ones where the parents are not INTIMATELY involved in their children's lives.
4. Lack of proper firearm storage. This one isn't ALWAYS the case, but it is most of the time. Suffice it to say that these kids aren't walking into gun shops and legally purchasing the firearms they use. Most of the time they're stealing them from their parents or grandparents. That tells me these firearms are not being properly secured by those adults. That's a major issue for me as a responsible gun owner. I'm not saying these kids wouldn't use a knife or stick to do some damage but with properly secured firearms the damage would be much more limited.
There are probably a dozen other factors, from improper school oversight of students, classmates who bully or tease, the medical records system that doesn't allow for reasonable availability of information to necessary parties, etc... Unfortunately really the only quick, easy solution to this sort of incident is armed security at all of our schools and pat-downs/bag searches at every entrance to the building. We all know that isn't going to happen, but the alternative (massive societal corrections) is even less likely to happen any time in the near future.

KH, I think you already know that you and I view women in very different ways. Personally, if I were to ever be stranded in a situation like that I would prefer only one woman in the rest of the group and I'd want it to be somebody that I enjoy being with and have a connection to. Whether she's fat or bitchy or dumb doesn't make a difference at that point. Just a difference of opinion, I guess.
To the other point... I have no problems with being honest, even if it comes off as rude in other people's mind. Some people appreciate it, others don't. Well, that is not my problem, I am just telling the truth from my perspective.
It's not just a matter of being honest with others, KH. It's also a matter of being honest with yourself. There have been some questions asked in this thread that I've had to sit down and honestly ask myself how I'd deal with that situation or what I really would say in answer. I wouldn't call it therapy so much as needing to look inside and truthfully answer the question, because the ES membership can smell BS a mile away.

Yes, there are and have been in the course of the thread, I believe. Somebody asked what one person in the world I would kill if I knew I could get away with it. There've been a couple other items I believe. Basically anything that's so far beyond the realm of good taste and common decency that all it will do is create problems I'm not going to answer.

While I would absolutely LOVE to be at the HOF induction of Art Monk and Darrell Green (my favorite NFL player of all time), I have another committment that weekend. What's even more frustrating is that the committment is less than 110 miles from the front door of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Unfortunately it's not a committment that I can break.
I was very pleased to see both Art Monk and Darrell Green elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I've always believed that Art belonged in the Hall, and it was great to see my favorite NFL player of all-time make it on the first ballot. It would've been even sweeter if Russ Grimm had been elected as well, but we'd probably be pretty greedy if we complained about that at this point.

I noticed from an early post that two books you would take with you to a deserted island would be The Art of War, and a book of Chilvalry. Two books from long before the U.S. became a country. I also remember your advocating a total ban on foreign goods, ideas, ect.
Would you give those books up if the United States became the isolationist nation you envision? Or is it a matter of your being intellectually capable of resisting their influence?
And as you cite the 2nd amendment right to bear arms as the reason you can own weapons (as I do as well), what about the first amendment and the right of free speech? Are only some parts of the constitution to be applied? Or do you simply read them differently than I do?

Interesting question. It's been asked a couple of times in the past (not in this thread). The easiest explaination is....
The Europe and Asia that I hate are their MODERN versions. I would have LOVED to have lived in medieval europe or asia during the time of the samauri. Unfortunately those areas of the world have devolved (in my mind) in the modern era and no longer hold any relevance or worth in my mind.

I probably tend to read them differently than you do.
I personally read the 2nd amendment to mean that the government does not have the right to deny gun ownership to the citizenry. I do believe there are people who shouldn't own guns... children, the mentally disabled, criminals, etc... however outside of such things the government shouldn't be limiting the ownership of weapons among the law abiding public.
In regards to the 1st amendment I believe that "free speech" should only refer to the TRUTH. I don't believe that anyone has the right to stand up and lie about things openly. I understand that's an unusual concept in this country, but it's the way I see things.

sooooooooooooooo Baby V, my wife and I were at the United States Botanical Gardens this past weekend, my wife spots Mexican Oregano in the medicinal herb greenhouse and goes in for "the pinch" - steps into the garden, pulls a leaf off and says - "wow that sure is lemony", i had to ask her nicely to fix the mulch where her footprint was left
lucky for us, i didnt have to bail her out of the joint with our 7 month old baby girl in tow
CLASSIC!!!1 - i saw people's jaws drop
my question to you MSF is this -
Would my wife have gone to jail for what she did, if she got caught?

Definitely. I'd love to move to the Southeast (NC, SC, GA, maybe even VA area) if I could find a job situation comparable to the one I'm in now. Unfortunately the pay scales seem to be decidedly different.
It's tough at times living in a bastion of Liberal scumballs. Thankfully the area I'm in is a LITTLE better. Not a whole lot but a little at least.

I don't agree with the idea of th Bill of Rights being rewritten every 20 years. I think that just opens it up to the ideas of the day rather than the over-arching ideas of Right and Wrong.
I don't see political partisanship as a bad thing and never have.

Not really, and here's why.....
At least in my experience Temporary Solutions are generally intended to be Temporary for a reason. Generally because people believe that there is a BETTER Permanent Solution than the Temporary Solution. Unfortunately all too often the Temporary Solution becomes "TRADITION", and a wise person once told me that TRADITIONS are more important than laws because they have the backing of the "people in general" rather than the backing of the "people in charge". If the Articles had been allowed to stay in effect for an extended period of time they would likely have become TRADITION and been that much more difficult to replace with a fully functioning and well thought out governmental structure.

Could please give us an abridged version of what would be your platform if you were running to be POTUS?
Essentially it would come down to one word "Nationalism" and/or one phrase "America First, America Last, America ALONE". Essentially we're talking complete and total isolationism. Militarily, economically, no international travel, etc....
Also, how much of your political beliefs would you say come from your interest in history? Because I am always interested in history and often become more tilted in certain directions when I revisit post-revolutionary history, and I'm wondering if you think I would be less tilted and more grounded if the majority of my readings was in that time period?
I think that my entire worldview is based largely on a combination of my interest in history and my small dabblings into philosophy. Personally I believe that it isn't what portion of history one looks at so much as how one interprets what they find in that portion of history that influences them. 10 people could read a book about the Knights Templar and come away with 10 very different theories on what was good, bad, or indifferent about them. History doesn't, or at least shouldn't have a single, set interpretation so far as I'm concerned.

MSF, what do you think of Baseball? Entertaining all the time? Only in person? Not a fan at all?
I used to be an avid Boston Red Sox fan and followed the game VERY closely. I no longer put anywhere near the time or energy into following it that I did even a few short years ago.
I find baseball interesting and entertaining because of all the strategic and tactical decisions that need to be made on a pitch-by-pitch basis.

Do you know how to do fourier transforms?
If you do, could you check this problem for me.
f(t) = sin (2*pi*wt)²
what is the fourier transform of this function F(t) and graph it.
My answer is F(t) = sqrt(2Pi)*((i*(Partial(f-w)-Partial(f+w))/2)^2 but I'm not sure.
If you don't know how to do this how long do you think it would take you to learn it on your own if you were really motivated to?

It seems that many restaurants are getting publicity for eating contests and dishes that set records. In Europe I recall hearing of a story where they tried to make the world's biggest outdoor pizza. Every July 4th they hold Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest in New York City , and coming soon to Detroit : The World's biggest Burger (http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080223/FEATURES01/802230305)
The question is , would you ever think of participating in any of these events , or consuming any of this record-breaking food?

Math, especially anything beyond algebra and geometry is something that I attempt to avoid at all possible costs. I went into the field I did (design drafting) rather than engineering or architecture largely because I didn't want to have to grind my way through trig and calculus, which I knew would be seriously difficult subjects for me.
As for how long it would take for me to learn it. To truly know and understand it, probably several weeks to a month. To be able to insert the numbers into the equation and do the math, probably 1-2 weeks.

I don't eat a whole lot and I don't eat very fast so the Nathan's Hot Dog eating contest and things like that aren't my forte. As for eating any of the record-breaking food, it would largely depend on what it was and why it was made... for charity, for profit, etc....

No I have not. I am allergic to the natural red iodine dye that is in most crayfish, crabs and lobster. Not deathly allergic, but I do break out something fierce I'm not sure how I would react to blue crab but I've never really had a taste for much seafood so I haven't bothered to try it. Besides, if I wasn't allergic and wanted crustacean for dinner, there's a little place up the road called MAINE whose residents would probably be very upset at me for trying Maryland Blue Crab over a good ole Maine Lobster.

I don't listen to a large amount of music. When I do it's largely country music but we have a couple of stations in the area that play 80's & 90's rock that I'll listen to from time to time. I enjoy instrumental, new age, 50's rock, and classical music depending on my mood.
Have you ever been ensnared in a large weather event, such as a hurrincane, funnel cloud, earthquake, flood, mudslide, blizzard, forest fire, or tidal wave? If so, what did you do to survive? Was it a character building experiance?
I've lived through a couple of hurricanes growing up in CT and I experienced a tornado warning in WI many years ago while visiting family there.
In a Connecticut hurricane you basically bring anything that might fly around indoors, tape the windows, and hope that the cellar doesn't flood with all the rain. Really it wasn't all that much more than the worlds worst Thunderstorm so far as I was concerned at the time.
I was about 10 when I went through the tornado warning. The tornado was in another area of Madison County so we sat in the cellar for three hours watching tv until it was over.

So long as it's an American truck, I'd suggest the truck. You'll get a lot more use and enjoyment out of the truck than you likely will out of the 2008 Redskins season if I have my guess.
If it's a foreign truck, spend the money on something else altogether that you might get some enjoyment out of than the Redskins season; like a huge flatscreen LCD HD television and surround sound system, or unlicensed backyard dental surgery.

If the Clinton family (Bill, Hillary, Chelsea, and Roger) came knocking on that cellar door, and had nowhere else to go, would you let them in? If so, would you feed them if they had to stay 5+ hours. If so, would you limit their rations?

That depends. Do I think that those people who felt he was a better choice than McCain but chose to vote for Romney instead are probably wondering about that very thing?... probably. Unfortunately it wouldn't have made a difference. There are not enough people out there in the Republican party who would have even looked twice at Ron Paul to have given him a chance. Take all of Romney and Paul's delegates together and you still don't even get close to catching McCain.
Do you think, based on the present canidates, that Paul might still have a shot at the Whitehouse?
No, I don't believe he has any more chance now than he did before or any more chance than Ralph Nader or Michael Bloomberg do. Their names will be footnotes in the history of the 2008 Presidential Election, just like Ross Perot's was some years ago.

From everything I've heard they're still not exactly sure what caused the problem to grow like it did. It started with a fire at a substation that knocked out two transmission lines. Beyond that nobody's quite sure what the sequence of events was just yet.
The electrical infastructure in the entire world is never as up-to-date and modern as we'd like it to be or as would be nice. It really depends on the area and the company as to how good or bad it is. Unfortunately for it to truly be as up to date as possible the rate payers would have to see a substantial rate increase and nobody wants that.

I eat it far more often than I should. Unfortuantely that's one of the down-sides to my current lifestyle where I'm on the go so often.
KFC is probably my favorite sin food in that regard. Regular, not extra-crispy with mashed and coleslaw. I could live on that stuff, at least until I died of a heart attack.

I'm a die-hard Boston Bruins fan and have been for years. Ray Borque and Cam Neely and Adam Oates were like GODS to me growing up. I also enjoy watching NCAA hockey. It's a little different game than the NHL but it's still enjoyable. We've got an AHL franchise in Worcester so I try to get down there every once in a while as well.
I think hockey's future is very difficult to predict. It's a sport that walks a difficult road between the brutality of the hitting and fighting and the speed and athleticism it can also be about. If the league ever finds a way to truly mesh its opposing interests into a manageable form I think it will become VERY popular. If not, the NHL may soon have to start looking at contracting teams for the good of the league.

Happy with Tim Thomas this year? He seems to be doing pretty well. Also, I'm not remembering the specifics off the top of my head, but the rules of international hockey, IE the game they play during the olympics, differ from NHL rules (the big things being rink size and number of lines iirc). Do you prefer the NHL rules or the International rules?

Thomas has played above average but he seems to have critical moments where he lacks concentration. He also seems to give up an unbelievable amount of questionable goals compared to the total number he gives up.
Yes, International Hockey plays on a larger surface and is a much less contact-oriented game. Personally I believe hockey is a physical game and that it should be played that way. Not with the clutching and grabbing of the past, but defenders need to be allowed to stand their ground against forwards more than they've been allowed in recent years.

That depends on why and how the individual is using the ignore list, h_h.
Personally I'm quite secure in my own skin. I just don't see and never have seen the point in listening to or reading dissenting positions.
Especially when they're coming from people who seem to assume that every discussion should be an attempt to change another person's mind, a position that I whole-heartedly disagree with.
As for articulating my position... I think I do that fairly well. Unfortunately a large number of people here have apparently taken it as a challenge to either change those positions or to point out to me where they're "wrong" at every turn. Again something I'm not interested in partaking of.
Basically the "Ignore List" is my way of ensuring I don't see the commentaries of the people I'm most likely to get Permanently Banned if I do read and respond to the comments from.

I enjoy soccer. I played it (very poorly) as a child and both of my younger brothers played it at lower level (Div. II and Div. III) colleges. It's a sport that I really wish more Americans would take some time to sit back and actually watch without the prejudice that many people come to watching it with. I think there are a great many things about the game that the American audience could learn to really enjoy if they'd give it a chance. The speed, grace, technical skill, and even the strategy of the game all hold something for the viewer who wishes to take the time to learn something about the game. It also has great history and personalities, especially at the International level.
I watch MLS at times and I try to follow the US Men's National Team as closely as I can. I had a chance to see the US Women's National Team beat Sweden in a "friendly" at Foxboro a couple years ago and that was quite an experience.

It's nice to see them in sixth place. Unfortunately that's just further proof in my mind that if they actually had some OFFENSE that they might be in the Top THREE in the conference right now. Especially since they're only 4 points behind Ottawa in the NorthEast Division.
They still don't play an aggressive enough style of hockey for my tastes and until the team proves to me that they can score 3-5 goals EVERY NIGHT over a month-long stretch I'm not going to believe that Julien's system is worth much. I also want to see this defense-first system win in the PLAYOFFS, where you only get a couple of mulligans. Right now the team is scoring about 2.75 goals a game and giving up 2.67 goals a game. That's WAY TOO CLOSE of a margin for me to have a lot of faith in this team right now.

My opinion is that AFL is just different enough from NFL that people going in with the assumption that it's more "football as usual," will be turned off and that the characteristics of the sport that have the most draw are more in line with faster back-and-forth sports like soccer than NFL. I was actually a season ticket holder for the former Connecticut Coyotes of the AFL for one year. It's a sport I enjoy watching, but I understand that it's a niche sport. Not everyone is going to enjoy it.

It's a VERY different game from NFL or NCAA football. It has only the most basic correlations with either of those sports to begin with. I really think they need to stop promoting themselves as a feeder league for the NFL and start trying to promote themselves as what they are.

I was REQUIRED to take three years of a foreign language in high school. I took French and I can remember words and an odd phrase or two but there's no way I could go to Montreal or Paris and be of any use with it.
As with any sort of information, it's not a bad idea to have some people around who know other languages, so long as it is for academic purposes only.

You're pretty close on what I believe is going to happen over the next couple of years. I see this team being torn down to its most basic elements so that a new coach and general manager can come in essentially with a fresh slate and start a complete rebuilding process that I have to believe will take 3-5 years to bring us back to a point where we might actually compete for a Super Bowl.
I think the talent level of this team right now is pathetic and disgusting. Given the power to do so, you'd see a turnover of probably 40-45 of the 53 players on this roster as soon as it was humanly possible. You'd also see a movement towards holding players responsible (via fines and firings) when they don't get their jobs done.

You'd also see a movement towards holding players responsible (via fines and firings) when they don't get their jobs done.
Do you mind discussing the players on the team that would stick around with you as GM, and what kind of systems you would be looking for offensively and defensively.
Also, are there points in time (like elections, free agency, regular season, etc.) where the ignore list seems to get the most new members, or have any particular threads that you remember contributed to an influx of members?

The five that I see in a quick look at the roster who would remain are: Albright, Frost, Landry, Sellers, and M. Washington. Beyond that there'd probably be a couple of low-price guys who might be held onto but not many more.
I'd be looking for an EXCEPTIONALLY AGGRESSIVE defensive system. The sort of system where you don't worry about what the offense does or doesn't do well, because you're going to simply attack whatever they try to do. Likewise on offense I'd be looking for a system that looks to do what it wants, not simply whatever the defense will give it. An offense that looks to score touchdowns every drive, not be content with field goals.
Also, are there points in time (like elections, free agency, regular season, etc.) where the ignore list seems to get the most new members, or have any particular threads that you remember contributed to an influx of members?
Not really, to be honest. Things seem to go in waves but I wouldn't say there are any particular times or types of threads that have lead to more additions than any others.

I think it fits right into the "conspiracy theory" that I've been discussing over in The Stadium for the last several weeks.
I don't believe you'll see the Redskins sign any Free Agents of consequence in the next two or three years. They'll sign a bunch of veteran minimum backups from other teams to be starters at the positions where we get rid of starters but nobody of any consequence.
Likewise, I don't expect the Redskins to use the #21 pick in the draft. I expect to see them trade down from #21 into the second round and possibly even further back. Over the next two years I see them stocking up on 2010 and 2011 draft picks instead of taking players now.

I see the team losing even more in 2009-2010 because there will be EVEN LESS talent on that team than there will be on this team. By the 2010 season, if there is no lockout and there is an extension of the CBA, I expect that at least half of the NFL commentators will have to look up the colleges that most of our players attended because NOBODY will have ever heard of most of the players on our roster by that point in time.

Serious questions, I'm not trying to give you a hard time but rather figure out your mindset as that is what this thread is all about.
Furthermore, you said you've dropped being a fan of the Red Sox, and are seriously considering doing the same for the Bruins if they lose to the Panthers coming up, could you imagine giving up your fandom for the Skins? No, it just means that I've seriously over-estimated the quality of the game nowadays. I've also under-estimated the ability of the Redskins team to play with emotion and drag themselves to wins that they in no way deserved to get.
However, with the removal of talent that I believe is happening in DC this year and in the next couple, I doubt that even emotion will be able to overcome the massive differences in talent level between the Redskins and even the bottom end teams in the league.
Furthermore, you said you've dropped being a fan of the Red Sox, and are seriously considering doing the same for the Bruins if they lose to the Panthers coming up, could you imagine giving up your fandom for the Skins? Both the Bruins and Red Sox no longer exist in my world.
The Bruins "died" last night when they couldn't even find the emotion to crush a pathetic Panthers team the night after they (Boston) got clubbed by another inferior SouthLeast Division team.
Yes, I could very easily see myself giving up following the Redskins. It's come very close several times in recent years and could happen very easily under the right conditions at this point.
The 2004 season is the season when I STOPPED following the Red Sox. I walked away from the team after Game 3 of the ALCS against the New York Yankees and just before the team went on an 8-0 run to win their first World Series in more than 80 years. I didn't watch a single pitch of the World Series and haven't watched a single pitch of major league baseball since.

How about because I don't believe this team has had anything near the level of talent to actually WIN anything since 1991. I don't believe this team has had a coaching staff or roster built to win at even the NCAA Div. I-AA level since the end of the Gibbs I era.

You are confusing the meaning of secure and ignorant there mate ;)
Seeking out different opinions/ideas/viewpoints is a sign of a secure person because it means they can accept criticism, and they are secure enough in their own standing to evolve their opinions based on increased information. The security comes in terms of knowledge from all sides of the equation, and knowing that they made the best choice with the most information available.
An insecure person will ignore contrary opinions because they are not secure enough in their own belief system to accept criticism, and therefor can not come to grips with an opposing point of view. They in turn ignore any opposing point of view, repress it and squash it out, because if they actually paid attention, it could challenge their stance. Because they can't be challenged, they can't be wrong, and are always right. In fact, people who are the most insecure come out the strongest and the boldest because they think it masks their own internal struggles. . .yet it is a beacon to those in the know.

Yes, I have two....
The first and main one is that I didn't spend more time with my father while he was alive. We both have similar temperments and were too much alike in many ways. Thankfully we had a chance to sit down and clear the air before he passed away, but I still wish I'd been smart enough to spend more time and learn more from him while he was still here.
The second has to do with a young lady I dated at the end of my time in college and for a short while afterwards. I really thought she might be "the one". Unfortunately things didn't work out. That's not the regret so much as the way both of us acted towards each other when we broke up. Let's just say it was UGLY and PUBLIC. Neither is a good thing, and in combination they're really not good.

In grade school grammar, we are taught that the way to turn a word that ends in "e" to the past tense is "to drop the -e and add -ed." In other words, skate becomes skated but NOT from just adding a "d." No, you have to drop the "e," then put it right back on there with a "d" attached. That's the actual official written rule. So, is this rule:
A. Painfully stupid.
B. Staggeringly stupid.
C. Inconceivably stupid.
D. All of the above.

Wrong question to ask. Both of my parents were teachers, so I actually understand why its taught that way.
The concept is to teach that the suffix is "-ed", not simply "d". To ensure that the suffix is taught properly, the existing "e" must be removed from the base word or you would end up with "skateed" which just looks awful, never mind trying to pronounce it.

And let's say just for the sake of discussion, that this man orders you to break into Democratic National Headquarters, in order to provide an edge in the upcoming election.
Would you do it?

Your question is based on several faulty concepts, but I'll get to that in a minute.
In answer to the question you asked.... HELL NO. That moment would be the end of my support of that individual on all levels.
Your question is faulty on a couple levels....
1. I'm not a Republican and I'm basically to a point where I believe they're as bad as the Democratic Party.
2. I don't believe that there is any INDIVIDUAL who could turn this country around on their own.
3. The idea that I could be loyal to the sort of person who would make such a request.

Are there any other sports besides the ones I've mentioned before such as golf, cricket, tennis, lacrosse, water polo, softball, or whatever that you follow or find entertaining?

No, not really. I'll watch NASCAR on occassion, but most of the other sports I just don't find interesting. Especially golf and tennis. I'll watch the Olympics for the non-judged competitions, but figure skating, gymnastics, and the other judged competitions I don't waste my time with.

I used to be a big Bill Elliott fan. With his retirement I've kind of followed Matt Kenseth and Kasey Khane a little bit, but not as closely as I used to follow Bill.
To me NASCAR is the ultimate test of an individual driver & crew's ability to get the most out of the equipment. I'm not a huge fan of the Car of Tomorrow, but it does definitely take EQUIPMENT out of the equation. When you look at CART or any of the open wheel race groups it's as much about who has the best engine and most money. Hell, if you get a lousy engine package in some of those groups you might as well not show up. Whereas with NASCAR working to make the cars as technically identical as possible, it's up the the drivers and their crews to make the small adjustments both before and during the race to take their driver to victory lane.

Do you have any type of formal combat training such as martial arts of fencing?
Also, what do you think of the Boston Bruins decision to replace Tim Thomas with a sieve fashioned to resemble Tim Thomas?

No. I have some training in the Western Martial Art (SCA Heavy List Combat) that I'm involved in, but that's not the same sort of thing as the Eastern martial arts, boxing, fencing, etc... I've never been able to find an Eastern martial art whose overall philosophy and state of mind I agree with so I've kind of avoided them.
I do have training in the use of firearms for self-defense, but I don't think that's what you were talking about.
Also, what do you think of the Boston Bruins decision to replace Tim Thomas with a sieve fashioned to resemble Tim Thomas?
Do the Bruins still play in the NHL? I know they used to, but since I don't follow them anymore I wasn't sure if they still existed.

Chipotle or Qdoba? Or "I don't eat burritos?"
I don't eat a lot of Tex-Mex or anything spicy. It does unfortunate things to my intestines that are not pleasant no matter how good the food may taste going down.

Between my roommates and myself we have four cats, an english setter and two Norwegian Fjord horses (which are boarded at a farm nearby).
Hey Mass,
Apologies if this has been asked before, but do you have a New England accent?
Not really. There are three main "accents" in New England and they're all different. The Rhode Island accent, the Boston accent (pahk the cah in Havahd yahd) and the Maine accent. People who grew up in central Connecticut (like me) don't really have an accent.

I drive a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. My "dream car" is probably a Hummer, but vehicles aren't really something I dwell on that much.
Do you believe in any environmental issues such as global warming?
I believe that Earth has an environment. I believe it was here long before human beings showed up and will still be here long after human beings have gone the way of the dinosaurs.

I have no idea. While I'm just old enough to vaguely remember the whole bru-ha-ha about the show; I never watched it and nobody in my close family or friends watched it; so I really have no friggin idea even who the potential suspects would be.

I'm not so sure that would be funny so much as terribly ironic in a sick, twisted, and demented sort of fashion. Kind of like if Chomerics and I ended up being related somehow.

So are the Redskins your only team now?
How are you able to so conditionally be a fan of sports teams? Have you felt any relief since dropping the Red Sox despite their record since?
Do you come from a family of sports fans, and if so what do they think of your interest in the Redskins?

So are the Redskins your only team now?
Yes. The Redskins are my only rooting interest at this point in time.
How are you able to so conditionally be a fan of sports teams? Have you felt any relief since dropping the Red Sox despite their record since?
Very easily. I see fandom as a two-way street. If the team doesn't provide the return on my investment of time, energy, money, etc... they're going to get dropped. That's why the Sox and Bruins are gone and why the Redskins are VERY CLOSE to joining them.
I felt a huge amount of relief the moment I dropped the Sox and earlier this week when I dumped the Bruins. It's like taking a huge weight off of me. No more having to watch disgusting performances by marginal teams. It's quite a liberating feeling, trust me.
Part of what you need to understand is that I don't get "up" when my teams win. That's the EXPECTED result and therefore nothing much to get all excited about. The only time I get really emotional is when they LOSE, which is the unacceptable result.
Do you come from a family of sports fans, and if so what do they think of your interest in the Redskins?
Not really. My father would watch the Red Sox on occassion but that was about it. Even my two younger brothers are luke-warm sports fans at best.
