View Full Version : Best NFL teams NOT to win a SB

Your thoughts?
My top 5 (No order) (I know it's heavy on recent teams - Cause I'm doing this from meomery)
1) 1998 Vikings - 15-1 Only loss was by 3 points. Missed the Super Bowl cause Anderson misses 1 kick all year... NFC championship
2) 1983 Redskins - Do I even need to explain?
3) 1996 Broncos - 13-3 (1 loss was a game at end of season where no starters played). Home field advantage - Some how Jacksonville pulled off a huge upset. Broncos would go on to win the next 2 super bowls
4)2005 Colts - They were dominant - but cursed. Head coach loses his son during the season. And remember the biggest fluke? Colts D Back gets stabbed by his wife in the leg night before the game with the colts. He plays anyway, with time running out and the colts loosing by a field goal, steelers fumble, this guy picks up the ball, and gets triped up by Ben Rothensburg. If he was .01 seconds faster (I.E - Not stabbed the night before) he's in for a TD?
5) 1987 49ers - Hey - Not complaing here. Skins won that year - But they were 14-2 and played great all year. Vikings came out of no where to have thier best game that year (Vikes were 8-7 that year!). Biggest playoff upset I remember watching. Skins got to play a team that snuck into the playoffs to go to the super bowl.

You mean the 2005 Colts, but I agree, if Nick Harper was not stabbed, that extra speed he would have had would have sprung him all the way.
I would add the 2006 Chargers though, they were seemingly unstoppable.

I did mean 2005 Colts - Thanks! I edited it.
I ALMOST put the 2006 chargers - But then it would be top 6 not top 5, and who has a top 6 list?

I'd add two teams to the list:
1968 Baltimore Colts- They finished 13-1 and lost Superbowl III to Broadway Joe Namath and the Jets.
1976 Pittsburgh Steelers- They finished 10-4 and were gunning for their 3rd consecutive Superbowl win. They shut out 5 out of their 14 opponents that season and lost the AFC title game to the Raiders.

Has to be the 98 Vikings.
Gary Anderson doesnt miss a FG all year and misses a chip shot against the Falcons in the Title game, then Chandler drives the Falcons for the tying score and Morten Anderson nails the winner in OT. I was at 3 Dollar Cafe in Buckhead (ATL) and it was bedlam when he hit it.

Uh- how can the Colts play the Colts? I think you meant the Steelers. Also, 87 was a strike year- so 49ers only played 15 games. Think their record was 13-2.

Yup, the 90 Redskins were pretty good too. 1990 Giants...luckiest team evah!

1968 Colts.
There is a reason Joe Namath is legendary for guaranteeing victory. Its because no one thought the Jets stood a chance against that Colts team.

How about the 90 Bills?
i wonder why it took so long before one of the bills teams showed up. they were really dominant.
i'll also go with one of the bengal's teams of the 80s.
you can also make a case for some of the eagles teams of the late 80s/90s and recently.

I was thinking Bills - But I never remember them being overwhelming faviorates in any of the SB. They were clearly the best team in the AFC for years... but there was never a time where they seemed to be the best team in the league....

Had the fellas not gone out and partied the night before, we might have another trophy in the trophy case...

I think you mean the 87 Saints. I remember hoping against hope the Vikes would win because I knew my Dad would take me to the Championship game if the Skins hosted.
Between that game and the Bears/Skins - what a weekend of football.

no - It was the 87 49ers....
Saints lost to them in the wild card game - 49ers lost to them in the divisional game

you're right. I remembered the Saints/Vikes game vivdly though. The Saints were awesome that year to and I remember the media playing up the fact they haven't won a playoff game ever or something. That was a huge upset too.

How about the 2001 Rams? The biggest reason why Warner and Co were bottled by the underdog Pats was because of Warners Injured hand. He couldn't throw the deep ball that game and it cost them a big play or two.

It wasn't just that
Remember that the Pats secondary knocked the snot out of the Rams WRs all day and Mike Martz, the Rams idiot HC kept right on throwing into the Pats coverages and didn't run the ball more with Marshall Faulk to pull up the safeties and set up the pass a little better

'83 Skins and '98 Vikings are the two highest scoring teams in league history but had their seasons end in misery.

Yeah I remember I was really bitter about that game. The Rams became a second favorite of mine after the 1999 season, but things weren't the same after Dick Vermiel left.

You know, I was in the USSR on a school trip over winter break and this was the one playoff game I didn't see, but.......how good were the '86 Bears team that the Skins knocked off. I know they were defending champs, and followed their 15-1 championship year up with a 14-2 mark. I don't think I ever got to even watch highlights of that game where we beat them. I remember being so psyched to hear we had won (a classmate of mine on the trip had called home and found out the scores), but then got really apprehensive about the next week when the guy them mentioned that the Giants had destroyed a good 49ers team 49-3!!
Between the Niners, Skins, Giants, and Bears, the NFC had some beast teams in the 80s.

I agree with this choice. There was no way the JETS were going to beat the Colts.

98 Vikings
83 Skins
Those are the top two for me. It is no coincidence that they both had the most prolific offenses to date, and at the time of their season held the record for the best Offense in history.
After that. . .
06 Chargers- 14-2 All time prolific offense (#16 all time and great defense)
84 Dolphins- 14-2 (Best season for a QB ever)
05 Colts- 14-2 2nd in points scored & 2nd in allowed for the season

How about the '78 Cowboys? They were the defending champions and took a great Steeler team to the max at 35-31.
They were one of only two defending champions to lose the Superbowl.
I won't mention the other one.

I believe our 1983 team was by far the best team to not win the Super Bowl. We lost 2 games by a total of 2 points.

That play would have never happened had the refs not made the worst blown call in NFL history on the Polamalu interception. If the call was made correctly, the Steelers would've had the ball at midfield with only 5:26 left in the game and would have most likely scored again. There would have been no Edge TD, no Bettis fumble, no game saving tackle by Big Ben, and no Vandershank FG miss...the Steelers would have won by double digits.
