Classic Rock station 94.7 died today and was replaced by something called the globe. I was riding home from work and noticed the change. What is CBS trying to do to me. No more Surf in the afternoons. No more Shelby during the day.

Their website at www.947thearrow.com has been replaced by http://947theglobe.com/

That's too bad, 94.7 was pretty good.

Remember 99.1 HFS? Now they are a Spanish station. I like it way better now. It's good backround music plus I can work on my Spanish.

94.7 sucked. I'm 22 years old and pretty much listened to that station because there was nothing better. Waaaaay to many commercials, and the same old songs over and over again. You guys don't know how bad it is until you go somewhere else.

I moved down to Norfolk last semester to go to ODU and 106.9 the Fox is a million times better than that crap station. Good riddance.

Man, I'm going to miss this station.

It was real good for so long and it had novelty and homliness on the radio. It was the first station I would turn to before any other crap. The rap stations all have too many commercials and talking, and 101 plays some soft crap most of the time. 98 Rock is good half of the time. They are streaky.

100.3 came out and was direct competition to Arrow's format. It wasn't hard to acknoledge it plays a wider range of songs on a consistant basis. But the dynamics of 94.7 made it exciting to race to when you turned the radio on.

But Arrow has been around since we were kids. I'm going to miss Surf, darn. Hope he gets the spot in 100.3. RIP Arrow 94.7.

there really aren't many mountains between where i live and the dc area.

the eagle is pretty good. like most radio stations, they tend to play certain songs too much, but it's a pretty good classic rock station. i listen to it all day in the summer when i'm painting.

This is horrible. 94.7 is (I won't acknowledge its death) the greatest classic rock station I have ever come across among the Eclectic Lunch, Live from the Archives, and especially Weasel's box sets. To anyone that says 94.7 plays the same stuff all the time is flat-out wrong. If you could here the garbage classic rock they have here, you would know exactly what I am talking about.

Every time I drive to D.C. I turn on The Arrow and call in a request as soon as I hit Fredericksburg. HFS was one thing, but this is a travesty.

94.7 was a really good classic rock station. oh well, this is why I abandoned the radio years ago....Ipod control through the stereo will change your world!

Its happening all over...in Philly we now have 1.5 rock stations. 1 is all day rock, the other is talk radio during the day, rock at night and on weekends. There are 3 or 4 rap stations, and 2 "new hits" stations, and 1 steady rock station. No mix anymore.

94.7 did 2 things very wong and 2 things very right.

Shelby's ecclectic lunch and Weasel's box set at night were great radio shows.

But they played way to many lousy songs - too much Boston, Styx, and Journey - and the commercials at times seemed to drag on forever. Also, songs like Free Bird, Stairway to Heaven...we've all heard those songs a zillion times. Those songs are jokes today. WARW seemed either unaware of this or they just couldn't deviate from the songs that the corporate computer spit out. Either that, or they needed a new focus group analysis.

I'll miss it, but last night, the new guys played some Talking Heads, Beck, Stones (It's Only Rock N' Roll, not just satisfaction every fricken time)...so it's not all bad. I also heard "I got my mind set on you" by George Harrison, so it's not all good, either.

But time marches on and the new station seems intent on bringing in new genres. If the new format includes stuff that WARW left out, like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, etc., then I say it's a change for the better.

I'll agree with this. Their commercial breaks were marathon-esque.

I heard the managers spiel, too....seems to want input from the listeners and try to make it a better radio station as time goes on.

I just emailed them. We'll see if they respond.

The thing I wouldn't want to see is a station that is going for the "softer classic rock from the 80's & 90's for aging yuppies" audience. But based on what I heard last night, that's at least 50% of their format. But hey, if it means I never have to hear "Come Sail Away" again, then it's a fair trade.

And I've always got some King Crimson & Jeff Beck Group in the CD player when I need a break from commercial rock/pop. :)

How I ever lived without satellite radio is amazing.
FM radio commercials might be the reason for so much road rage.

There are never enough good radio stations, or too many of the same ones. With satellite, I can pick and choose what I am in the mood for at any given time and tune in without commercials. I havent listened to conventional radio for years. Its not worth the aggravation of commercial after commercial, or its extremely repetitive nature.

OUR MISSION:
WE WANT TO BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION.

1. THE GLOBE - We All share and have a vested interest in The Globe.

2. MUSIC MATTERS - Music is our priority. That's why we're here.

3. THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY - As a Local Radio Station, we'll support our community...because we live here too.

4. REAL DEEJAYS, REAL PEOPLE - Our DeeJays know The Music and have a say in what they play.

5. LISTEN TO THE LISTENERS - This is your radio station. You will co-create it and author its evolution.

6. MUSIC DIVERSITY - Do you know anyone who likes just one kind of music? Neither do we.

7. BE ADVENTUROUS - We'll be open minded about new ideas, innovation and New Music.

8. DEEPER TRACKS - As we all know, there are songs worth playing that are not just the Hit Singles.

9. LESS REPETITION - Without repeating, belaboring, or saying this over and over and over again...well, enough said.

10. WE WON'T INSULT YOUR INTELLIGENCE - The Globe will have commercials (got bills of our own to pay) but we will try to keep them to a minimum and present them in a way that respects our listeners and our advertisers.

11. LET'S HAVE FUN - None of this is a joke, but seriously...let's have some fun.

12. WE'RE NOT TRYING TO SAVE THE WORLD - Oh wait…see #1.
http://947theglobe.com/

This is why standard radio is losing, they have no effing clue as to why people are not listening anymore. People are sick of commericals, people are willing to pay $13 not to listen to 30min of commericals an hour. Now, all of a sudden they dont want repition? wow it took them this long???Good Riddance to standard radio they got what they deserved.

Finally I come in to this thread and people are posting with some common sense. 94.7 was not a good as many of you think it was. You just didn't know what you were missing because you just hadn't heard anything better.

I've spent at least a 1000 hours in traffic ready to put my head through my window if the commercial break went ONE MORE COMMERCIAL. For every 6 or 7 minutes of music, they would torture you with 10 minutes of commercials. It was insane and the arrow was asking for it.

We get that down here. It's pretty standard, definitely pales(d) in comparison to the Arrow IMO. Lots of Dani California, Allman Bros., Boston, etc. Gets old pretty fast for me... but I drove all the way to Radford, VA and it pretty much was in reception for me the entire drive, which was impressive to me.

96.1 out of Raleigh, on the other hand, is the best current rock station I have heard. Much better than DC101 or 98Rock in DC/Balto.

If you are into the indie/college stuff, 88.1 WKNC (NC State Radio) is great during the day.

106.9 the Eagle is a terrible radio station, but at least they play SOME good rock tunes from time to time.

I join in those that have said that free radio is dead. I've got Sirius in the car and I'd never even think of turning on regular radio again. I can get whatever genre I want, whenever I want it, no commercials, no annoying ass DJs. You've got stations that play anywhere from death metal to easy listening, and about 30 stops in between. You've got one station ("The Vault") exclusively dedicated to playing songs that you don't typically hear on classic rock radio, and about 5 times a day, I say, "Damn, I can't believe they're playing this. Awesome..."

Above all, the best feature is that you get to see what song is playing on the radio station as you're tuning in, meaning I can immediately cruise past Boston in the off-chance that it's being played for no reason whatsoever.

(Seriously, there cannot be enough fans of Boston to justify the amount of airplay they get.)

By the way, does anyone pick up 106.9 the Fox in the Norfolk area? When I go home to Gainesville, it comes in loud and clear almost all the way to Fredricksburg. It plays a great variety of good old classic rock and has few commercials. Easily my favorite radio station ever and I spent the first 21 of my 22 years of my life in the DC area listening to nothing but 94.7, 101.1, and 106.7 (Don and Mike, my favorite show ever).

Anyone enjoy this station?

Ok, I've been listening to the Globe for a few hours as I clean up around the house, and and I've got to say, this is definitely a change for the better. Lots of variety, staying away form the more predictable stuff...

Oh lord...just as I say that, they play The Smiths. How could they follow up "Roots, Rock, Reggae" with The Smiths? But that shows what kind of variety they're going for, I guess.

Anyway, so far, I'm not missing WARW. I've really liked about 80% of what I've heard. "Hey Hey What Can I Do"..."Shattered"...some Clapton, Squeeze, STP, Van Morrison...not bad.

The new 94.7 plays newer rock along with some classic rock. I don't like it. Give me my Zeppelin, give me my Stones and CCR. Fresh-smesh. The new music they play gets annoying MUCH faster than the classic rock songs they used to play. That's the reason those oldies are still being played, they have longevity. 100.3 & 100.7 > 94.7.

I don't listen to OTA radio anymore (it is XM and my MP3 player for me), but Lee Abrams of XM got to hear some of The World, and he thought it was decent. He feels it is still a little too sterile in comparison to what he feels is the ideal, but it is at least the right idea.

Personally, I think the point of radio is to discover music you may not have heard before. Otherwise, how is it any better than an MP3 player. In fact, it isn't as good as an MP3 player, because you don't have the control over the content. If you get a song you don't like, you can't skip it.

Down where I am RnR is spotty at best. When i get in range I like to listen to it, but I must say, too much Grateful dead for me,,, (Truth is ONE Dead song is too many for me.) and I think the "adult alternative' genre they dip from should be renamed "spineless wuss music".
I like things harder,, i like the punk garage sound,, doesn't have to be technically perfect,, just rock and roll baby... that is why I created the Bang Music Hour (http://www.bangcartoon.com/musichour.htm) ... for those like me who have to have something new.

Well, can't say I'm a classic Rock listener, but I thought I would chime in on 99.1

It sucks, period. I still don't know the circumstances behind the format change, but I'v heard it was very shady. And I fail to see how an all spanish station can be drawing in more revenue than HFS did.

On the plus side, they don't play Nirvana every other song anymore. But, I really really miss the HFstival. I remember watching MTV once (when they used to actually play videos and such) and Kurt Loder did an entire MTV news segment on the HFStival, and how it was the concert that officially kicked off the big summer events. Again, I fail to see how your radio station can be doing that, yet you want to do a format change all of a sudden, to a format that only targets a specific range of people.

Maybe it's just me though.
