wonder who will replace him.....
In a sharp blow to the Orioles' 2007 hopes, right-hander Kris Benson will miss the entire season due to a partially torn rotator cuff, FOXSports.com has learned.

Yea thats a blow and a half. But atleast we'll get to see some of the future. I'm thinking Garret Olsen will get a nice long look in big league camp. He and Radhames Liz both got invites this past week. Whats the new roto? Bedard, Wright, Loewen, Cabrera, Penn?

Benson was supposed to be the 170-190 inning, .500 winner and help the rotation stay on even keel.
Looks like it'll be
Bedard, Cabrera, Wright, Loewen and Penn/Olson/Liz/scrap heap

Maybe he can get one if he makes the starting 5.

Man this will hurt us..I was hoping to see how Benson does this season, he was our 2nd best pitcher after Bedard last season.

Hopefully Nancy will make some apps during this year's game threads. I look forward to doing those write ups again...even if the posts don't count anymore. :(
As for Trachsel...I'd rather give Olson, Penn and Liz 5 or so starts to see if they can't get good experience and maybe stick around -- especially Penn, who doesn't have much to prove to minor league batters, or Olson, a guy with all the tools to be a solid starter.
I guess Trachsel is some insurance in case another starter goes down, and were not throwing out Kurt Birkins or Alabama man Eric DuBose out there every 5th game.

Ouch. No Kris or Anna Benson.
Why does this team refuse to address their starting pitching? It's all spit and gum wrappers every year. Arrrrgh!

I don't know about every year. With a healthy Benson, the Orioles rotation looked to have a great upside. Bedard is a front of the rotation guy, and Cabrera and Loewen have VERY good stuff. I actually LIKED the idea of cleaning house with the Rodrigo Lopez's and Sidney Ponson's of the world-- good riddance to the guys who can't really win ballgames and DON'T have high end potential.
I'd even go as far as to say that I's rather see a rotation of Bedard, Cabrera, Loewen, Penn and Olson (Radhames Liz, Brian Burress, et al.), and see who can pitch. The A's did that last year, looked horrid for two months, then became a contender! That with Harden hurt for a lot of the year.
Why waste innings on Steve Trachsel and Jaret Wrright at all except for spot starts and pen work..or to skip some guys here and there who are strugggling.
Oh, and @ least this isn't a rotataion that sees names like Eric DuBose or Kurt Ainsworth. yeesh. Where's Damian Moss and Josh Towers when you need em. hehe :silly:

Yeah, I don't think arms are the problem at all in B-more...they've got 4 young guys who've proven they can pitch at the major league level, and if Cabrera gets his head together like the second half of last year, they could have one of the best 1-2 punches in the league. They also have some quality young arms who should be ready in the next couple years.
What this team has failed to address the last few years is POWER! They have some of the league's weakest bats at the core power positions--corner infield and outfield. If this team hopes to contend in the AL and the East they've got to make a trade or sign a bigger FA then Jay Payton. Markakis, Payton, Mora, Millar, Gibbons...these guys are okay hitters, but they scare no one, and there's not a legit 30 HR threat among them. Well, maybe Gibby, but he can't stay healthy.
Flanny and the FO have got to address the power shortage in B-more, or it'll be more of the same for this team. A guy in the middle of the order to protect Tejada, and another guy to pitch around will make the entire lineup better.

i agree with you completely, we need some homeruns out of this lineup. Millar is terrible, Gibbons hasnt been as good as expected, Mora is getting old, Markakis is great average guy but has little pop in his bat, and Payton has little power too, overall i think Tejada is the only guy on this team who even has a chance of hitting 25+ bombs this year.

Last year everyone was complaining about not locking up Mora, now he is old....
Markakis was learning major league pitching last year, and late in the year his bat came alive for HR's, I bet he will blow ppls socks off this year in that catagory
Gibbons will do well if he doesn't get injured, I see him good for 30 if he can stay healthy, but that is a big if
I also think that Huff could be good for 25 this year, along with Hernandez.
We have some real promise in our lineup
As for the topic at hand, I think this will be a real blow to the team. Losing Benson with the way that he pitched last year will be killer, hopefully we will se our young arms develop a little more and they will be able to pick up the slack but I think this one hurts a lot.

I'm glad everyone is so high on our starting pitching. Obviously I like Bedard and Cabrera could be something. I'm not sold on Loewen at all. And Penn is a joke. I'm afraid losing Kris and Anna is gonna hurt.

I can understand not being sold on Loewen, he had his ups and downs, but I don't understand why the hatred for Penn. He is only 22 and he came back too fast last year after emergency surgery to remove his appendix. He may need to be groomed a little more at the minor league level, but he is only 22 and has shown that he has the potential to win at the major league level...
As for Cabrera, I am hoping for a bit of "major league" magic for him with his glasses after last season. He looked real good late. Bedard still needs to grow, as does every one of our young starters...
The thing is that we have a really young group of really talented pitchers who have at least some experience at the major league level. Not a lot of people were sold on Detroit's pitching staff untill last year, and I think that our guys have more talent and the advantage of a better pitching coach.

But if I understand right, Traschel is not doing too good.
First off its just the sping, second he is supposed to be a "innings eater" which means that he is meant to be average and pitch a lot of innings so that the bullpen will not get worn out as much.
Traschel has shown that he can be a veteran and can eat innings like a beast, he has a slightly above average era (above in the wrong sense) and he has had the benifit of good run production behind him, but usually he isn't horrendous in an outing but hardly ever stellar either.... basicly I look for him to sit in the middle of the rotation and help with the bullpen between our young starters.
But yeah, he was supposed to be a stop gap to help give Penn and Olson some good time in the minors to finish getting ready for the majors without being rushed.

I just lost all respect for Benson. Read the article down towards the bottom where he talks about his future in baseball the next decade.

He plans on making a lot more money? You're making 7.5 to sit on your ass. Give me a break! You didn't even perform that well last year. I know that most players want to make their fair share, but don't say it out loud or to the media, it looks like Anna's class has rubbed off on her husband.
I don't know why this spurned so much anger in me, but I used to want him to come back next year (at a discount) to rebuild his career. Now I hope he never becomes more than a AAA journeyman.

ok so here is the direct quote from the article
I want to play for another six or seven years. I want to make a lot more money in this game," Benson said earlier this spring. "I want to accomplish a lot more things in this game. I think the decision I make is going to be the right one for the future. ... I think they know that I want to come back and pitch at this level. The people that know me and know what I want to do in this game [know] the money is not the issue. I want to be in this game for the long haul.
Basicly he says that he wants to make a lot more money IN THIS GAME. Meaning in baseball, I don't know that he necessisarily was saying that he wanted more money than he is making now for next year, but that he was trying to say that he wanted to play a lot more years in the league at a high level, of course that would make him a lot more money.
I think you are overreacting here, He wants to play for a long time, and that will bring money with it if he can be good
As for the "he wasn't even good last year", BS, he was way way better than his record showed last year, he should have had 15 wins easily but they were either lost to the bullpen or he had a no decision because of the bullpen... and then there was the times he went and threw 8 innings and gave up 2 runs just to lose 2-1 or 2-0... He was better than his record although he had a bad streak in the middle of the year which ironicly enough they are saying was due to his problems with his rotator cuff which he is going to have surgery on...

You do make a few good points, i was remiss to discount the skill he posseses, either way, I still have a deep seated dislike for Benson and his whore of a wife, who really is trash and does nothing to help his or the teams image, except of course. I think he should be more concerned with getting back in a uniform as shoulder injuries are much, much more difficult to come back from than elbow injuries.
I guess the Anna comment I just made does nothing to discredit his skill, so I admit he is talented. I suppose it does more to explain my dislike of him as a person. Anyways, just wanted to rant, he should be gone next year if he wants to make his money, as Angelos won't want to keep a well paid player around.
