Gilbert Makes Another 50-Point Prediction
Well, this is not going to make the Wizards PR people happy. Gilbert deliberately avoided talking to the media (http://blog.washingtonpost.com/dcsportsbog/2007/02/wiz_practice_damage_control_in.html) yesterday. The Washington Times's John Mitchell got some quotes out of him anyhow (http://www.washingtontimes.com/sports/20070213-123536-2348r.htm). But now we find out that one of CSTV's mad hoops bloggers ducked in on one of Gilbert's nightly practice sessions (http://www.cstv.com/hoopsodyssey/2007/02/12/) at the VC during last night's Georgetown-West Virginia game. This is totally against the rules, but I would have done it too.
Gil is shooting until he makes 100 shots at each spot. The mad hoops blogger seems surprised. Who would have thought it; Gilbert Arenas taking some extra jumpers. And, naturally, Gil says a few noteworthy things. Like, he discusses the Portland game.I ask Arenas about his recent fifty point guarantee against Portland. "I knew after I said that that they'd double (team) me," he says "so I came out not too aggressive and got my teammates involved. It was part of my plan. But when we go up to their place, they won't be expecting it, and they won't double me. That's when I'm really planning on dropping 50."Well, maybe they wouldn't have been expecting it if you hadn't gone and discussed it with a mad hoops blogger from CSTV. Now, the way these tube thingees work, there's a decent chance people in Portland will read what you just said. As will LeBron James. Whom you just totally called out. Someone tell Joseph White."The guy LeBron needs is Sam Cassell," says Arenas, "He needs someone who wants to take the big shots at the end of the game." I interject that LeBron would never stand for that -- it would kill his ego. "LeBron would much rather have Cassell take the final shot," says Arenas. "People don't realize that LeBron doesn't want it."Also Gilbert plans to finish "whatever's in front of runner up" during the three-point contest, and he says he's "taking over the world a little bit."
Aside from the smarmy self-congratulatory tone--Look at me! I talked to Gilbert Arenas! OMG!!!!!--it's a fine blog post and well worth reading, and it will likely be blogged about incessantly today and in the future. Plus there's video.

oh so his real plan is to get 50 NEXT game cause they wont expect it. He needs to just stop. Other teams are always going to try and slow him down, he is the best player. They will double him if they need to, regardless of what he says. I love Gilbert but he has got to shut up.

Do not ever compare Arenas to Owens. EVER. There's no such thing as symptoms, you either have it or not and Arenas does not go from city to city destroying teams.

I find it just as disturbing as you, my man. Do remember that before TO became the devil, he was just a very productive player with some amusing personality quirks. Once he got a taste of the spotlight, however, he went straight to hell.

Not A Leader Right Now
Feb 13 - Eddie Jordan addressed the leadership issue again yesterday and said he did not regret the comments he made Sunday. "No, I stand by it," Jordan said. "Absolutely. Leadership is very special, whether you are the president of the United States or the captain of a basketball team or the CEO of company. It takes a very special person to be that. I know I am the coach but certainly for every team, you need a team leader. possesses all of those qualities. He keeps people together." -- Washington Post
# "Eddie has been trying to groom me into a leader since I got here," (Gilbert) Arenas said. "As a player it's hard for me because when you are a leader you have to have a perfect air about you. My leadership is different. I'm not going to be the guy who speaks up all the time. My role is to keep the locker room loose. At the same time I put the pressure on myself and try to take it off of the other guys. But in our locker room there is no question who the leader is. It's Antawn. So no, I didn't take offense to what Eddie said." -- Washington Times
Monday's report ...
# Eddie Jordan then made some indirect comments about Gilbert's leadership skills or lack thereof.
"First of all, we didn't have the leadership out there that we needed with Antawn (Jamison) out," Jordan said. "And no one else has stepped up into a leadership role. ..."
Eddie on not having Jamison's leadership: "It's very special, very special and Antawn has it. That's why he's the only captain on the team. I've tried to have main guys the last couple of years to be captains and it doesn't work because they don't have the qualities."
On Gilbert Arenas being a captain: "I don't want him to do it. He's not a leader right now. He's a scorer and our best player and you'd like your team to take the personality of your best player in a sense." -- Washington PostNot A Leader Right Now

Man, CB, AJ and his father really need to keep an eye on him.
He's really loosing it.
He's acting like suck a wanta be. It's sad.
If he just stayed quit, his play would do all the talking. He is in such a hurry to be a super star.
That rarely works. There is a train crash a com'n.

Looks like Gil is a SG.. a scorer. Thats it. News Flash. Like I havent been saying that forever. Well, now it firmly out there.
AJ is the leader and if he isnt in, its going to fall on CB. He has the skills. No problem there really.
At least we know what we have. Im glad Gil admitted it wasnt him.
Now all we have to do is resign AJ, let CB step up into second co-captain and move Gil to the SG and play a PG next to him.
Im glad we at least know what need to happen. Now, lets do it.

There is no doubting him. He said what he is out of his own mouth. Why force a guy to be a leader that doesn't want to be. He want to be a star, not a leader. He want to be a scoring champion, not a PG.
Go with the flow and stop swimming up stream. That's all.

Bingo.
I heard absolutely nothing serious out of Gilbert's mouth. He was messing around with the CSTV guy and all of you are freaking out like he's T.O.
The only thing this convinced me of is that: a.) Arenas has the best work-ethic in the NBA, b.) Jamison's leadership really is so valuable to this team and Gil is too childish to ever be a real "leader" in that sense, which I think we all knew, and c.) the feud between Arenas and Jordan is over.
Gil can joke around about scoring as much as he wants against Portland. Every team knows his scoring capabilities. It's not really going to make them play any better against them. Gil knows his capabilities and will always try his hardest and get his teammates involved if he's not worried.
The T.O. comparisons made by Wizards fans are disgraceful.
It's just Gil being Gil.

what scares me about Gill is his crazy bets and having to make 100 shots at each point, in the portland game he looked tired which is why he went 0-8 or 0-9 from 3, the shots were coming up short

Shot Down
Feb 15 - LeBron James shrugged off recent comments by Washington's Gilbert Arenas suggesting that James didn't like to take big shots at the end of games. In the Hoops Odyssey blog at cstv.com, Arenas is quoted as saying, "The guy LeBron needs is [Los Angeles Clippers guard] Sam Cassell. He needs someone who wants to take the big shots at the end of the game. LeBron would much rather have Cassell take the final shot. People don't realize that LeBron doesn't want it."
Said James: "I made two game-winners in the playoffs against him and knocked him out of the playoffs. So I don't understand where he gets that from. That doesn't make sense to me." -- Cleveland Plain Dealer
