I remember posting back and forth with spearhead about Stevenson when we first signed him. I was excited to see what he could do in DC, but I must admit that I didnt think he would fit this perfectly. His defense is a shot in the arm and he is way more efficient then any 2 guard we have had here over the last few years. He feeds off the big 3 perfectly and the scary thing is he doesnt even have his legs all the way back yet. I smell a nice extension for DeShawn. He is extremely unselfish and a Gil/Deshawn backcourt over the years sounds damn good to me. Heres to EG making it happen...

He's a great team player, someone who doesn't try to do too much. He knows his role.
On the same note, he can step up when needed.

I like him better than I thought I would. I thought he was just another mediocre player who should have never jumped from high school to the NBA. But he is a savy, smart, and clutch player. How many times have we desperately needed a bucket and Steezy is the one that comes through for us? I thought he was gonna en up being a one-year fill-in, but now I'm hoping for an extension.

We better re-sign Stevenson..I hope to see an Arenas and Stevenson starting backcourt for a long time.

really hope his play will put to bed all the posters that want daniels (never proven anything as a starter) to be a starter

He has exceeded all my expectations and he's a great fit with Arenas in the backcourt.

No it doesn't because I'm not comparing the 2 like that.
DS is a much better 2 guard. My problem is that I don't think we have a PG. Gil is a better 2 guard the DS. To me, that's the problem. We have 2 starting 2 guards and our best PG ( Gil ) is our best SG.
So the team offense is at the mercy of a player who is more likely to dribble it up and shot a 3 with 18 seconds on the clock then he is to start the offense and get other players involved for a higher quality shot or an easier shot for himself.
Gil is great, but you could get all of that from him at the 2 guard while having a PG that is focused on managing the game and getting everyone involved.
So while I love DSs game, I see this as a challenge. Someone has to be focused on running the offense. That's a PG and we have 2 SGs of which Gil is better.

the best thing about the whole situation is that he is not even 100 percent healthy. Once his knee gets to where it needs to be he will be the teams high flyer as well.

He had a really good game last night. He's done very well during his time here. Another find for Mr. Grunfeld!

How many other players are playing at his level for the Vet Min right now? He has got to be top 5 value for the money offseason additions in the league. And i laugh everyday at that Fox Sports article that named him the worst at his positon.

I can't see him.
Classic.
He has proven to be better than advertised on the offensive end and has really picked up his game to help the team in Antawn's absence. I still think his defense is overrated, but at least he tries.
He is playing so much better than he did at the beginning of the year and blowing away his previous career best in terms of efficiency. I blasted him earlier this year because it seemed as though he blew as many layups as Jared, but that could have been due to him recovering from knee surgery.
I'd just like to admit that I was wrong about him, but in saying that, I wouldn't break the bank in trying to resign him. SG is the easiest position to fill in the NBA.

I don't think anybody can say anything but positive things about Deshawn. He plays his guts out out there (whoa, sounded like Joe Gibbs there  ) and it's come to the point to where he can sink baskets when needed. Not to mention he is an aggressive defender and just has a great overall personality. I'm with everyone else when I say that I hope he's here in DC for a long time

Deshawn is just one guy. We are not functioning as a team right now. Placing all of the blame on Deshawn is pretty ridiculous when IMO he is one of the ONLY players consistently contributing.

I'm not placing all the blame on him, I'm simply stating that his shooting from the field hasnt been very good lately

big step up from JJ for a bargain price. as said before - beautiful management / FO work, and even better is the way that stevenson's game and personality mesh so well with this team.

Your a nut. We agree on more then you seem to remember. It's just we disagree on some things also. Hey, we are here to debate stuff. I don't get to worked up over the things we disagree on, I just post the evidence I think supports my view. If people get a little touchy about how I do it, so be it.
This DS thing bothers me. I like the dude on our team but I want Gil at the SG pretty badly. If we could get Kidd in the off-season, that would be amazing for us. Then in a few years when Gil matures, he can take what he learned from Kidd and move back to the PG.
Also, following the How to Build a Championship Team instructions, Kidd qualifies as a missing piece we need.
But this would leave DS as a bench player. Only, that isnt what he said he wants to be so it doesnt seem like a good fit unless he wants to be on a championship team, more then he wants to start. I can't remember where he came from, but I know it had to do with wanting more money.
If it took loosing him to get Kidd here, I would have to live with loosing him.
Anyone that is an EJ lover should really like the idea of bringing Kidd here. I think it would be a Nash type move for us.

WOW...Jason Kidd would be the missing link I believe that will make a good team great by providing a steady force that will improve our consistency.

DS is nothing special. This team needs a floor general to run the offense.. Gilbert has shown that he is not a great decision maker.. Many of his assists come thru the fast-break and are not considered true assist. What i mean is that, those passes are not passes that cut thru the lane, backdoor screens, pick and rolls. Alot of his assists come from CB when he does his silly 1 on 1 move

I can make 70% of my free throws. :silly:
I like him - especially his defensive game.

Exactly. Gil assists dont look like Nash assists. Not that many others do either but you now what I mean. Gil gets the ball on a rebound or an inbound an tosses it full court on a fast break. Now, that is amazing also, but it isnt running the set offense which is needed when you have a rough D team. Specially in the playoffs. Also, Gils shot first mentality doesnt lend well to running an offense.
Jidd coming here would be the home run. Gil can be Gil while he learns from one of the greats.

When his teammates make plays, Gilbert gets assists.
No lead guard/Kobe-Tmac-Dwade-Lebron type has more assists ruined by bad playing than Gilbert.
I'm sticking by that, because I have seen Gilbert put up 15 assists on occasion since he was in GSW, when his teammates make their shots, he is a set up man, when they suck, he isn't.
Having a guy who can catch and score in the post helps with assists also.
BTW, DS is something special because he is doing all this with a bum knee and is just 25 years old.

I'll be honest, at the beginning of the season I hated Stevenson. I thought he sucked and I didn't want him on our team. But seeing what he's done and what he's capable, I feel comfortable with him playing in the backcourt with Arenas. He knows his role as a roleplayer and he does it extremely well.

Can we afford to lose our best perimeter defender? Give DS 25-30 million

One really important thing people need to remember about Deshawn is he was playing on a bum knee all year and its been about 2 weeks now since he has even come close to the athleticism he has, even if he never gets back to his pre injury explosiveness, just getting back to last years would be a huge jump.
and SkinsAddict - why did you think Deshawn sucked and you didn't want him on the team - I assume this was before he was signed at the vet minimum, right?
