View Full Version : Shaun Suisham...Long Term Kicker?

After joining the Redskins I believe he missed just one kick (his first one) and then preceeded to go 8-8, 12-12 on PAT's and even boomed a 52-yarder.
Two of the most inconsistent positions for the Redskins over the past 15 million years that they have struggled, are quarterback and kicker. These positions are positions that require stability in order to succeed.
I, personally, feel as though Suisham is our long-term kicker. He was flawless last season and, although I am not against bringing in someone else to compete, I believe he should be the one signed to a long-term deal and kept as the future at the position.
With Jason Campbell and Shaun Suisham, The Washington Redskins may have finally solidified the quarterback and kicker position, something it has failed to do...well...ever.
What do you think?

Suisham has a long way to go to prove to be a long term NFL kicker. Not saying he won't be or that he can't be soon, just sayin.

Campbell has a long way to go to prove he will be a long-term quarterback...doesnt mean he wont be.
Based on last years performances, however, its easy to see how these two really could solidify two important positions for us.

Flawless is a bit of a stretch, but I think he'll turn out to be a more than capable kicker.

I like him. Hopefully, he'll stay that way here.

What are the requirements or the intangibles that a "long-term" kicker should have?

We need to bring in some new kickers this offseason to challenge him, and keep him fresh. I dont think we brought in any kickers last offseason to challenge Hall. Thats how some players fall off. That to thinking they their position on lock, and start to slack off.

Good luck with him. He missed a fair amount of kicks in Dallas. Every field goal I was sitting on edge hoping he would make it.

I agree with the post above. I wouldn't annoint him yet. He was cut for a reason. Bring in fresh talent and see how he fairs.

goes 8-9 after joining the team including a 52 yarder.
doesnt get hurt...
Doesnt need multiple chances to make a game winning kick, and then when does make a game winning kick, everyone doesnt wonder how the hell it went in....

I would bring in an experienced vet to compete with him in training camp. Not an Olindo Mare type who would absolutely have to have the job but an experienced guy to push him. Suisham could develop IMO and I would give him every opportunity.....

I hope so...for once to find a talent instead of buying one.

Actually, for some reason, I felt comfortable when he kicked. Novak and Hall had me gripping the couch cushions so tight, I left DNA in the material.

I hope so, would be nice to have along term homegrown kicker like Lohmiller, and he's a fellow Canuck so I'm rooting for him

I agree you just don't know with Kickers. I remember some guy that was here and left after a bad outing oh what's his name? Oh wait, i've got it David Akers! I don't know of too many solid options out there. Feely is probably the best one and has the longest and best track record for accuracy. Olindo Mare has struggled in recent years. What about Vanderjagt? I know I'm going to get flammed for that one, but he is one of the most accurate kickers of all time. So long as you don't have Troy Vincent on the FG Block team.

we could always bring in Mike Vanderjagt...you know, because he is a sure thing.

people around here think that just because someone has been cut somewhere else that they cant play for us.
Smoot was cut in Minny...I guess we shouldnt have given him a shot.
Bad Front office! bad. bad.

I really don't trust Suisham. I see him as a minor upgrade over Novak. OH yea, ^^^^ the point about Smoot and Suisham is lame. You can't really compare complicated defensive schemes involving all 12 players and strategy to kicking a ball through the uprights. All you need is a good hold and the line preventing the block. Easier said than done I know, but it's not at all even close to the same.

How about we start with acknowledging he is more dependable than Hall, at least in the short time he has been here. The rest we'll just figure.

I agree. I really think Suisham is our solution to our kicker problems. I hope he proves me right next season.

I completely disagree.
First of all, kicking a ball through the uprights is all mental for all these guys. Its not about talent, aside from leg strength, kicking is 100% mental for the guys that have made it to the NFL. They all have the talent.
In minny, Smoot struggled but he obviously has plenty of talent.
Suisham has struggled elsewhere, but in Washington he did well and is now confident, as well as comfortable playing for this team.
Smoot is confident when he is out there playing for the Skins, and is comfortable in this scheme.
Talent is easy to come by in the NFL but its the other factors that seperate them.

i never understood why we're not looking into Vanderjagt. somebody's going to give him a second chance & he's going to prove his mettle, watch. it's just a confidence thing in crunchtime. he'll figure it out for somebody & everybody else will rue the day. it's hard to go wrong with the most accurate ever, especially when choosing between him & some nobody who's trying to prove himself. I say bring him in cheap & let them compete.

and did he? yes, he did.
here's another thing that i always look for in a kicker: when they make the kick, how well are they really "making" it? are they wobbling like a shot duck three feet in from the post (see Hall), or are they floating powerfully up and down through the center portion of the uprights (see Suisham)? this tells me he's on his game, and hitting the sweet spot, so to speak.
David Akers' kicks look like that.

The idiot kicker is not going to be given a chance here not because he has missed some kicks recently but because he would be a distraction to the team.

I know nothing about the guy. Last season my area stopped airing all Redskins games and the sad part about that is I am only 1 /12 hour drive away from D.C. But I still coultn't get channell 5, and 45 would never air it, and thanks to the Ravens CBS decided to never air the Redskins in my county. The only way I got to see a game the second half of the season is when they were on NFL Network thanks to my Dish Network. Which by the way, Dish Network took away all my D.C. stations.

Yep, Suishams kicks for us were powerful, and accurate. His 52 yarder against the Rams was dead center and had more than enough distance. Suisham without a doubt has the potential to be our kicker for a long time.

Is Suisham going to be a top NFL kicker 5 years from now? I dont know.
What I do know is hes performed better and been more reliable than any kicker we have had for a long time. Dont overthink it.

I hope that we found our kicker in Shaun Suisham. It would be nice to see a decent kicker who could handle the pressure and stay away from injury. But if he isnt, Im always available for a try out.

So unless we are playing an afc team you arent going to see the skins on cbs...

I don't think Suisham is the long term answer. There are a lot of good kickers coming out of college this year. Bring on the competition and let's see.

I would bring in Feely in a heartbeat. He's solid, proven and consistent. I'm sick of the weekly kicker tryouts.

Let's let him loose the job on his own. no need to create a controversy. Give this guy a chance. he hasn't let anyone down yet.

I agree with the above poster. Not only has he proven reliable on field goals and pat's, but he's able to boom the kickoff high AND deep, which is something we haven't seen in a while. Coupled with Frost as an emergency backup in case of injury and I think we have a good kicking tandem.
Let the coaches just work on form with one kicker. Until he's injured or proves otherwise (like missing 4 out of 5 inside the 30), I say make him comfortable.

I really liked nick novak, but he let me down. I NEVER liked Hall, hes awful-- suisham might be the guy, we have to wait-- but i think the difference between a stable kicker and a stable quarterback is that a qb with a bad season can rebound, a bad kicker is out after a year

I agree 100%. Kickers get on hot streaks and no doubt that Suisham was on one at the end of last year. I want to see how he reacts under real pressure and not when the season is basically over.
I know that the season being over was not his fault but kicking is such a mental game. I think that 8 for 8 gave is giving me some hope for this year but I am going to be hopefully optimistic.
