While we're all banging our heads wondering why the 'skins are suddenly making all these moves to create cap space I was thinking hmmmmm, maybe they're are getting ready to extend Cooley? I say this because it has been reported recently that they have been working on extending him.

This would make a lot of us 'skins fans extremely happy.

It's been reported that they are trying to extend him? I hadn't heard that.

I fear the extra cap space is for Bly. Not that I don't want him, but I want Cooley and ST to be extended with that cash.

I wish it was, but it's probably for the Dre Bly trade.

Not that much of it, Bly won't cost more then 3.5 mil this year to sign, hopefully they may try to throw a few more mil in there to lessen the cap hit later.

Cooley's extension is almost guaranteed in my mind. Either that or they are looking at a few other FA's we don't know about.

I think they let Cooley hang for another year. Though I'd like to see him re-inked ASAP!

My guess is so they extend Bly and then to absorb the cap hit on the Springs trade.

Of course we're gonna resign him!

Who else would we have if we let him go? No one, so we have to extend him!

Lock him up! PLEASE!

Why worry about Cooley at the moment? It's for the Blye deal. Cooley's under contract and carries one of the lowest franchise tag amounts for any position. We could tag him easily next year.

Oh dear god how many times does this have to be posted.

The extra hit for trading SS is only 100k over his current cap charge. There for it will only cost an extra 100k to trade him.

EX

If we have 10 mil in cap space.

We trade SS today

We will have 9.9 mil in cap space still available.

A lot of players REALLY dislike the franchise tag (I admit, I'm not sure exactly why).

Cooley doesn't seem like the type to sell out to the highest bidder so long as the 'skins don't disrespect him, but possible that tagging him risks alienating a great player/locker room presence/team guy...

If they are good enough for the team to place the franchise tag on then they will command a big signing bonus or guaranteed money. If they are Franchised and suffer a career ending injury in training camp or just suffer a season ending injury they will lose out on a lot of money if their career is over or they will miss out on money if they had a serious injury the previous year.

that is why Briggs is pissed now that he has seen the money being thrown around this year.

Does that include the charge that picking up Bly's contract would put on our number?

So is it that we swap SS for Bly, have Bly's number added and still have $9.9M available? Or we lose SS, our cap charge goes up $100k, and we still have to account for Bly out of the $9.9M?

I dont see bly costing more then 3.5 mil (that is a very high est, but it depends on the deal and years) but we would be at 6.4 mil left in cap space, by the ex numbers that are about 200k higher then actual at this point.

Actual numbers are
Currently 9.865 under with John Halls release

Trade SS = 9.765 under

Bly 3.5 = 6.265 under.

Take into consideration that smoots deal cost us 2.1 mil this year, and Fletchers cost us 3 mil on the cap.

it was mentioned a couple of times... once in a WP article, then again in JLC's blog, and I think even a Times article as well

said they were working on getting it down before the 2007 season :applause:

I would not care if Taylor wasn'y extended let him play out his contract till 2011, if he improves drastically, then, sign him. I like Taylor, but if he doesn't improve at coverage, he is a a horrible liability at FS

NOW, Cooley is completely different.

:2cents:Taylor can void his contract after 6 years, and he will. We will need to re-sign him before the 2009 season.

Yeah i hope these moves are for the extending of Chris Cooley, but for some reason i see the Dre Bly trade coming shortly. But you never know, we may still have the cap space to extend Cooley. And may give him pro rated bonuses that dont go towards the cap. Who knows tho. I just want Cooley to play here his entire career. We just brought Smoot back so we can say Smooooooooooooot on defense, and we need to keep Cooley around, for the whole Coooooooooooooooooooley. I just hope the FO gives him his deserved money and extension

Taylor needs a couple of years of no on or off field stupidity to justify the trust of a big contract.

Good call TLusby. Although I agree that his contract situation needs to be addressed at SOME point in the FUTURE what the FO needs to concentrate on is getting all our other needs addressed. I get the feeling that too many posters are inordinately obssessed with Cooley. Maybe some of the posters are the cheerleaders Cooley was said to have been banging...:silly:

Taylor needs a couple of years of no on or off field stupidity to justify the trust of a big contract.Well, that works out perfectly. He has the next two seasons to prove he can be consistent both on and off the field. I'm not really sure what being consistent off the field is, but you get the idea. No guns, no fights, no spitting. Only titties and weed. :)

It's because it offers no financial security for the future. If you get hurt in a year in which you are tagged were talking millions lost.

If they were cheerleaders they'd do a little more cheering.

They just moan and complain though. Cooley is just one thing they found to pick on.

Redskins have no doubt about Cooley's worth, unlike Dockery. My guess they have a good idea what he and his agent want, (or will), and know how much they want to spend on him and those are probably alot closer to each other than say, Dock's numbers and their numbers were. Funny thing too is that there was the same type of quick mention about Thomas, Sellers, and others that kind of went beneath the radar until things were announced. Certainly Portis and Moss came as a surprise. Wouldn't be surprised to see something similar here.

Business is business! Cooley will demand $16-19M in guaranteed money. I believe the tag on a TE is only around $4M. That guaranteed money is at least fours years in tagged money. I would not do anything at the moment. The guy could have a career ending injury. We have at least two years to use him (this year and a tag year). We could draft another solid TE next year.

Sean Taylor is locked up until 2011, why does everyone on this board keep asking why he hasn't been extended?

Cooley is not leaving DC, mark my words.
