View Full Version : EMB/Sirus/League Rumors - Curtis, A Cowboy and Briggs?

March-8th-2007, 10:47 AM
Sirus Radio and the Eagles Message Board is saying the Eagles have contacted the Bears about trading TE LJ Smith and either a 2nd or 3rd pick for Lance Briggs. I heard the report this morning and saw it again on the EMB. This might work seeing how Randy McMichael is a FA who is a better pass catching TE than Smith. Plus Smith is in the final year of his contract.

LATER FOUND TO BE UNTRUE - PURE SPECULATION!!!!!!

**UPDATE** EMB Poster Eagles Nut posted a link stating a Former Cowboy ILB could visit the Eagles Friday...Ryan Fowler?\

http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070308/SPORTS01/703080395/1002/SPORTS

"At linebacker, Fowler played in 16 games for the Cowboys last season. He's a middle linebacker who's also received interest from the Eagles, and could visit Philadelphia on Friday. Since he's a restricted free agent, the Cowboys would have a right to match any offer sheet. Fowler was an undrafted free agent in 2004."

Discuss....though I doubt this would happen.

I read this rumor over at the EMB too. It's a fun rumor, but I can't see it going through.

Count me as interested, as if that is a surprise.

Also, the Adam Schefter is reporting they will bring in Donnie Edwards for a look as a potential replacement for either Trotter or Dhani Jones. The move would allow the team to groom the young LB core and provide help against the run as Edwards has the reputation as both a playmaker and a good tackler in space.

The guy on Sirus sounding like it was pretty serious, for some reason, I'm starting to believe that this might be legit, but then again, I've spent all week blasting them for their inactivity.

Please Eagles F.O....I dare you to make me feel stupid....I double dawg dare you.. :redpunch:

Thanks.....I'm kinda hoping he comes in and provides a little more leadership to the corps. Trotter for all his mouth, hasn't backed it up in two years. If Donnie signs here, that would give the LB corps a playmaker that they have lacked since William Thomas.

Hmm, in the thread on the EMB they are now saying that it was just a hypothetical thing from some fan that called in. This will never happen.

Just saw it too.....funny, when I heard it this morning, it sounded like a source putting it out there. Oh well...I guess I should have drank Dunkin' instead of McDonalds.

I guess I should go dig around for all the people in the Stadium who think Ladell Betts could garner a first rounder.

Replacing Trotter with Edwards would be suicide behind the Eagles DTs. Trotter is a 265 pound powerful hitter who stops runners in their tracks. Edwards is a 6'2 227 pound ilb who lines up behind the best NT in the league and gets carried for 2 yards when he hits. The eagles DTs penetrate and leave the linebackers to take on blockers a lot. Not to mention edwards is more of a wlb than he is slb or mlb. He is a amazing in coverage and an sure tackler, not a powerful one. The giants and chiefs are apparently interested too. Moving this guy to mlb in a 4-3 is a recipe for disaster imo. No one is blocking him with castillo (7 sacks), merrimen (almost DPOY), igor olshansky (freak), jamal williams (probowler for years), and shaun phillips (12 sacks) on the field. If he signs with the giants he will become injured (seems to be the FA thing to do) and never play well. If he signs anywhere else he will probably end his career like zach thomas is. I wouldn't even want him playing slb though, he has big bodies eating up the blockers and is usually given free shots at runners.

Edwards would be ideally suited as a SLB in a 4-3, perhaps moving to the middle in passing situations.

Replacing Jones makes a lot more sense than replacing Trotter, even though Trotter's play is on a steady decline.

I disagree, teams are looking at him mostly for his coverage abilities and sure tackling. I would assume teams would want him covering running backs and not trying to muscle with guys like cooley and shockey. This guy is the same weight as cato june but 2 inches talller, you don't want him to have to fight through blocks from tight ends, fullbacks, and tackles. At slb he would make much less of an impact imo. He isn't big or tall enough, or probably even fast enough to cover the nfc east TEs. He has wouldn't be able to blitz from the weakside (he can blitz well) as well. Having edwards coming off the weakside edge and picking up running backs would be utilizing him best imo.

Briggs is worth a first round pick in the 5-15 range. No second or third round pick is even close to that in point value. So LJ would have to make up the difference. Only an Eagle fan would think he COULD make up the difference.

Is that better? :silly:

Ummmmm....no comment. :paranoid:

I find it really amazing that the teams in the NFC East have been really quiet. Washington has signed 2 middle FA (Fletcher, Smoot),1 project (Tucker), Dallass has signed 2 middle kinda guys (Davis, Johnson) and Philly and the Giants haven't signed any. Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't know the exact numbers of signings, but really quiet in the NFCE this year.

Yeah...Dallas signed a "middle" guy in Davis, but payed him Anthony Munoz money.
