Paul Domowitch | Birds might be Super if...

SO MUCH FOR for re-signing Donté Stallworth. So much for Rod Hoodcoming back. So much for an Eagles linebacking corps that includes Donnie Edwards.

But hey, aren't you starting to get really, really psyched for that training-camp kick-return battle between Bethel Johnson and Jeremy Bloom?

A week-and-change into the free-agency signing

period, the Eagles pretty much have been spectators, which isn't necessarily a bad thing when you consider the ludicrous amounts of money that teams have been throwing at some very average players the last 10 days.

But, of course, Eagles fans

seldom have viewed financial restraint as an admirable quality, even in a bad free agent market.

The same people who have been questioning their intelligence for signing defensive

tackle Mike Patterson to a long-term extension last year are saluting the Patriots for

giving $9 million in guaranteed money to Wes Welker, a possession receiver who averaged 10.3 yards per catch for the Dolphins last season.

The Eagles' repeated offseason battle cry has been "21 of 22." That's the number of starters from last year's 10-win NFC East championship team who are under contract for next season.

Is that good enough for them to be able to make a Super Bowl run in '07?

It is, if Donovan McNabb comes back healthy and stays that way.

It is, if the Eagles find a way to replace the outside speed they're losing with Stallworth's departure.

It is, if Brodrick Bunkley

ever wakes up and realizes he's not in Tallahassee anymore,

Toto.

It is, if the Eagles weren't

kidding themselves in thinking Chris Gocong actually can make the significant leap from pass-rushing college defensive end to NFL strongside linebacker.

It is, if a lighter Jeremiah Trotter can give the Eagles more production in fewer snaps.

It is, if 33-year-old Brian Dawkins has one more Pro Bowl-caliber season in him.

It is, if Sean Considine can add 10 pounds of muscle to his frame and become a better run defender.

It is, if Jevon Kearse becomes a dominant pass rusher again and Darren Howard can be a lot more productive than he was last season.

And it is, if recently re-signed Will James stays healthy and gives the Eagles a corner with some size to match up against the Plaxico Burresses and

Terrell Owenses of the world.

Boy, that's a lot of ifs.

 The Skins returned 20 of 22 starters in 06 after a 11 win 05

beside the main reason (beside luck) the birds won 10 after being 5-6 is now playing in Tampa

His quote about returning 21 of 22 starters from NFCE Championship team is incorrect. Garcia and Stallworth are gone. However, McNabb > Stallworth + Garcia IMO.

I did like the pending training camp excitement comment about the duel between johnson and bloom. That was funny. Domo is one sarcastic son of a gun.

Yes. But if I had to choose a time of the year to go through hell, I'd take the off-season over the regular season every time. Not to mention, most of the hell comes from taking ish from opposing fans, the media, and the never-satisfied Eagle fan base, rather than a general feeling that we are missing oppotunities. I do feel like we miss opportunities in March, but never to the extent that the aforementioned groups seem to think.
