Definately a quality signing...Now Either Jon Jansen or he will likely be starting at LG next yr...We are poised to have a solid 9-7 or 10-6 season next yr w/08' being the first yr in awhile that we'll be way under the cap + have almost a full allotment of draft picks...
Looks like their finally starting to get it over there at Redskins Park!

Well, from memory here but,
1. He was released due to a serious knee injury and they didn't want to take the risk of him not being able to play and taking the cap $$$$.
2. He played damn well when he was in the game.
3. The players all said he is back and dominating in practice.
that said I can't figure out why he didn't garner much attention in FA. He is a solid backup/potential starter at the least and our line is probably deeper then it has been in a long time with hiim here.

I'm sure they are not keeping him just as a back-up at that money. He's gonna start somewhere on the line either at guard or at tackle and Jansen playing guard.
Absolutely LOVE this move, now we can focus on our main weakness in the draft, which is the D-line!!!

I agree that JJ did and still is a good/above average Tackle.
He does have problems with the outside speed rushers. Now that could just be because of his leg injury last year, but if he is inclined to it him moving to guard will negate that weakness and provide on hell of a pulling tandem on each side of the OL.

I am happy about this signing. He looked very solid last year, and I would have hated to see him go, even if it is just for depth. A man that is 6' 8" must be hard to get around regardless of the position they put him at (at least I hope). I see him as the same caliber as Leornard Davis only we spent 30 mil less than the Cowboys. I hope he becomes a real force for us. Great signing!

This has been a nice offseason in my opinion.
We've made some quiet re-signings that will obviously go unnoticed in the national media, but the types of moves that will go a long way towards solidifying the cohesiveness on this team.
What I love the most is the fact that the Redskins have stayed the course. Despite the sad season a year ago, this is clearly an organization that believes in itself. There is no self-doubt and this is largely attributed to the leadership at the top of the organization in the form of Joe Gibbs. He has not let criticism get in the way of positive decision making.
Rather than rebuilding the ship and going into a big panic, we've recognized the importance of the likes of guys like Todd Wade, Ladell Betts, Mike Sellars, and Vernon Fox.
This is clearly a team that is willing to do a little self reflection and recognize its mistakes. Maybe we see that letting go of the Ryan Clark's and Antonio Pierce's of the world isn't always the best thing to do. The days of making 4 or 5 big free agency splashes may very well be over.
The emphasis is being placed on building the house brick by brick.
This offseason has been a definite sign of progress in the approach that we are taking towards building a team.
I applaud the efforts of coach Gibbs, Vinny, and Mr. Snyder. I look forward to a nice draft in April.
I have a good feeling that last season may have very well been a speed bump in our progression under the watchful eye of Coach Gibbs.
Best of luck in '07 Skins !

I think they always have. I've never sensed any panic from this organization under Gibbs. Gibbs has always said that he wanted to keep everyone. It is just that sometimes, it isn't possible.
This is clearly a team that is willing to do a little self reflection and recognize its mistakes. Maybe we see that letting go of the Ryan Clark's and Antonio Pierce's of the world isn't always the best thing to do. The days of making 4 or 5 big free agency splashes may very well be over.
Well, it may be over just because it isn't needed anymore. The offensive personell is pretty much set, especially after this signing, and there isn't much more that FA can help with the defense. Also, the goals last season were different when visions of superbowls were in front of us.

Outstanding.
Nice to see the FO prioritizing those who have played well in this uniform, regardless of being a starter or not.
That's how the big boys do it, save the big money deals for the truly elite players and spend a little more on quality depth.
Sends the right message to the players...and fans.

Redskins Insider
from La Confora's blog
Hey there. I know that the NFL Network is reporting a deal with Wade is done. And I don't doubt it will get done (I think I had him at least tied for the highest score in America's Next Top Dock a while back). But I have multiple sources on both sides of the negotiations telling me that as of 11 pm ish Wed. night, they were very close but had not in fact agreed to terms.
So I got's to go with that. Have to play it safe and go with what I know. I do believe they will get a multi-year deal done by Thursday.
Several players said privately that facing Wade in practice last season was often more difficult than going against starting tackle Jon Jansen, and Wade's return, when coupled with the re-signing of Mike Pucillo, would give Washington solid depth at vital positions.
Wade (6-foot-8, 317 pounds) was originally selected 53rd overall by Miami in 2000 and was signed to a hefty contract by Houston in 2004, including a $10-million bonus. He started 13 games for the Texans that season but suffered a career-threatening knee injury in 2005, and was signed by the Redskins last September. He recovered fully from the knee problems and, should the sides complete a multi-year deal as expected, could fill a crucial role in 2007.
This dude could be an absolute beast if he stays healthy, could start at guard and be a stud back-up at tackle if need be. A year ago the O Line depth was a major area of concern. Skins complete this deal they should be in real good shape (and I would still be surprised if they don't trade down and get a young O Linemen to develop in the second/third round).
Oh well so it is not done yet. Schaeffer had a little premature spill it seems.

March-14th-2007, 10:29 PM
I love this move . . . But both Wade and Jansen are natural tackles . . . so it sure will be interesting to see if one of these guys will move to LG . . . or if this move truly is for depth.
Having said that though, I am glad to see the Skins finally doing quiet things that solidify a team . . . and do it without breaking the bank

Nice move. Either a starter or a depth guy. If he doesnt start he's earning a good paycheck which should keep him happy. If he starts he'll replace Dockery or Jansen nicely. The FO is really working well with line depth this year.
If they pick up 1-2 D linemen and another O-lineman they have excellent competition along both lines. As we all know, competition brings strength. Guys who started last year will be solid backups while solid backups last year wont make the team this year.

I'm glad we were able to re-sign him. I'm guessing teams didn't even know he had to fill in a whole game for Jansen at a time when our Oline was playing its best football, and played just as well. If he was able to handle the RT job than I'm sure he'll be able to play guard, and be able to pull well too. At least I hope so.

He has the size to play guard. I think they'll have him compete for the starting guard position. If he does start, we should still draft an eventual successor. In case of an injury to one of our guards, Wade can easily slide over and we would then have the draftee to plug in at guard.

It's good to have this guy on the team regardless of whether or not he starts. Still, he performed admirably at RT in the saints game, so hopefully he will either take over at that position with Jansen at LG, or vice versa.

Well, I guess that this means that we won't have any more interest in Ed Mulitalo. Doesn't it? :whoknows:

Todd Wade - It's Getting Close
Dude can see into the future, that is his secret.
Not only is Adam Scheffer a certified douche bag he usually makes things up or repeats a lot of things he reads on forums or blogs as official "reports"
remember the imminent trade of dre bly for ladell betts? "reported" a week ago? or the "reports" of randy moss going to the pats or phone calls between oakland and the packers for a deal when the calls never took place? yea all though were ficition of Mr. Scheffer....
even redskins.com has said that the deal isnt dont and adam scheffer already has the numbers to report?...
reporting on the NFL from NFL network is so easy a caveman(or in this case a douche bag in a cheap suit) could do it....

that said I can't figure out why he didn't garner much attention in FA. He is a solid backup/potential starter at the least and our line is probably deeper then it has been in a long time with hiim here.
Two things that might explain that:
1. The concern of him not being over his injury. (Skins knew better)
2. The stigma of having been a Houston Texans o-lineman. Seriously.

I'm really glad Wade will be back, interested to see were the will use him come training cap, at backup tackle or guard.

It was just 3 years ago that Wade was the hot FA LT on the market coming from the Dolphins, I said he was a steal when we signed him, that Texans deal gave him a real bad name, he is young(ish) and good.....
I don't know about him playing guard though, he seems pure pass blocking tackle to me, but maybe Buges can fatten him up a bit.

You all can thank me for this re-signing. A couple weeks ago, I wrote Todd Wade a lengthy e-mail on behalf of Redskins fans, urging him to come back and help fill the void that Dockery left, but wishing him luck with whichever final destination he ultimately chooses.
I take full credit for this apparent u-turn from Wade's camp.

Redskins | Team reaches agreement with Wade
Wed, 14 Mar 2007 19:39:54 -0700
Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports the Washington Redskins have reached an agreement with free agent OL Todd Wade (Redskins) on a two-year, $6.2 million deal. The agreement includes $3.5 million worth of guaranteed money.

All of the sudden we have nice depth at OL. Now sign Mulitalo and we're set. Russell, err... I mean Campbell will have plenty of time to throw. :D

I think this could be the best O-Line signing of this season. Some may think I'm crazy but I believe at the end of next season when we look back at the 07 season Todd Wade will be the O-lineman FA signing that meant the most to his team.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
That's GREAT news!
edit: I do wonder if he's planning on starting though. 6-8 is really tall for a guard, I dont know if that would work.

Wow, I'm very impressed with the offseason moves. I'm tempered as well in my enthusiasm because of previous years, however i think the team will react positively to all the re-signings. Hopefully a year under Saunders belt, campbells too will mean good things for us in 07...

I hope no one complains too much about this offseason. I think we've done pretty good and as long as they don't screw up the draft, I'll feel confident about this team in the fall. Not overly confident, just somewhat confident.

Is Todd Wade good enough to start for us or is this just a depth move?
Anyone have any info on Wade?

Wade will be our 3rd tackle. Hopefully though this year both Jansen and Samuels come into the season fully healthy and conditioned. Recall they both had offseason surgery last year
I still think we fill the guard need via a mid level signing, or in a trade down scenario and pick up a guard in the 3rd round

I think you're right about Wade's role on this team. Hopefully, he's someone we're comfortable enough with that he can spell those guys from time to time so that they can stay healthy for the entire year.
It would be nice to see us rotate some linemen into the game occassionally the way we had the luxury of doing it back in the glory days!

Yeah, I would agree with that as well. He's not the answer for Dockery, but he'll help shore us up in other areas and increase our flexibility should injuries become a factor this year.
This certainly seems like a pretty decent deal considering what else has been going on out there.

Wade may not be a Dockery replacement. Wade will add depth to the tackle postion on the o-line.
Dockery wasn;t worth what he got paid. Dockery will end up getting cut in a year or two by SF and we can re-sign him to for depth at tackle, because he wouldn't start.

I agree 1000%...Wade had a big game against the Saints, and having depth and a guy like Wade gives us options to move people around on the line.

BTW, you dont sign a young guy to 3 mill a year to be a backup.

This is a great move. Our FO is playing FA extremely smart this year.
Also, for those of you concerned about Wade's size, remember Dockery is 6' 6", Wade is only 2 inches taller.

Good. Now move Jansen's slow ass to guard and let Wade, who in one game last year looked better than Jansen did the whole year, at RT.
