View Full Version : Five Albums on a Deserted Island

Sure, this has probably been debated before on these boards, but it's always fun.

So here's the situation... You're stranded on an island with a CD player, but you only remembered to bring a few CDs. You can never listen to another CD for the rest of of your foreseeable life. What are the FIVE (no honorable mentions- that's cheating) albums that you wish you had?

My list:

1) Pink Floyd- Dark Side of the Moon
2) Bruce Springsteen- Nebraska
3) Oasis- Don't Believe the Truth (an album that nobody has or respects, but is absolutely incredible)
4) Smashing Pumpkins- Siamese Dream
5) Counting Crows- August and Everything After (just means something to me for the time of my life that it happens to represent)

You see, I think that a contrarian view is probably needed here. If I'm on a deserted Island with no hope of escape, and only have 5 cd's to succor me, than I might want the five cd's that would drive me the most insane. After all, it would be better to be delusional and irrational, if alone and bereft eternally on a Desert Island.

With that in mind:

Napolean V's They're Coming o Take Me Away Ha Ha
Yoko Ono's Greatest Hits
William Shatner's Greatest Love Songs
Sound Effects Vol 6
David Bowie We Can Dance

I thought "August and Everything After" should have been on that Rock and Roll Hall of Fame list of "The Essential 200" albums of all time. It's a really, really good album.

Man, this is really hard...and it could change daily....

Hendrix- Electric Ladyland. Though any Hendrix would do.
Metallica- Kill 'em All. Though anything pre black album including the black album would do.
Sublime- 40 Oz to Freedom
Led Zeppelin - III
Snoop Doggy Dogg- Doggystyle

Sublime- 40 Oz to Freedom

Crap...nice call on Sublime. Dammit! 5 CDs is just not enough. :)

Led Zeppelin - III

I love Zeppelin - they are so good, you could just grab a Zepp CD at random and it would kick ass. Of course HoH is the best by far. :silly:

Hey, thanks.

Again, thats a band you just really can't lose with whatever CD you pick. I think 40 Oz beats their self titled cd, but not by much. "Stand by your van" is also a good live compilation of their stuff.

Pretty tough call....do box sets count as one? :)

Avail - 4am Friday
Hendrix - Axis:Bold as Love
Chili Peppers - By the Way
Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Hellacopters - Strikes Like Lightning

Funny, I basically unwittingly did this experiment already. When I deployed to Desert Storm I grabbed a walkman and 4 cassettes at random. I was stuck listening to Black Crowes, Zeppelin IV, Eagles Greatest Hits, and Faith No More for 7 months. None of the albums was bad....but I still have trouble listening to them.

Different tastes I guess, although IMO you can't go wrong with either album. The first Phish album I heard was Story, so maybe thats why I generally consider it my favorite. That, and because Guyute will make your face melt. :)

Coheed and Cambria* - The Amory Wars
Coheed and Cambria - The Second Stage Turbine Blade
Coheed and CAmbria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3
Coheed and Cambria - Good Apollo, Im Burning Star IV: Volume I: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness
Coheed and Cambria* - Good Apollo, Im Burning Star IV: Volume II

These two albums havent even been made yet and I already know that they will be amazing. Plus these 5 albums put together tell a complete saga and therefore they need to be kept together. Good apollo II comes out this summer, can't wait. But yeah that is my 5

Off the top of my head

Common Sense - Resurrection
BDP - Criminal Minded
Black Star - Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Star
Stevie Wonder - is it cheating to say greatest hits? If it is, then toss up between innervisions and songs in the key of life.
Michael Jackson - Thriller

There's lots of others that could have been in the five, it's not really a clearcut top 5 or anything

This is a tough question because I like so many albums. Well, here's my five:

1. The Clash - "London Calling"
2. X - "Wild Gift"
3. Beatles - "Revolver"
4. Bad Religion - "How Can Hell Be Any Worse?"
5. Devo - "Freedom of Choice"

1. Lateralus (Tool)
2. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (Flaming Lips)
3. Hail to the Thief (Radiohead)
4. Amnesiac (Radiohead)
5. Aeroplane Over the Sea (Neutral Milk Hotel)

Great list, Liberty! Dude, I remember telling you about Aeroplane a few months back in your "Recommend me some bands..." thread--it's awesome to see that you like it! :D

I'd have to go:
1. Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
2. Radiohead - Amnesiac (picking this over their other albums based on "You And Whose Army?" and "Life In A Glass House" alone)
3. Tool - Aenima
4. Sigur Rós - Ágætis Byrjun
5. Funkadelic - Maggot Brain

*edit: I know it's against the rules of the thread, but my conscience won't allow me not to mention Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot as my imaginary number six. That is all. :)

I'd have to say:

1. Led Zepplin- Houses of the Holy (I know cliche, but so good)

I'm actually very suprised "Houses of the Holy" is being chosen over all the other Zep albums. I'd take Zep 1, 2, 4, Physical Graffiti, and In Through the Out Door over it. Not saying "Houses of the Holy" isn't good, it just isn't much compared to the others I mentioned, in my opinion.

I probably responded to this thread the first time around and I bet if I responded again, I'd pick 5 different albums. Just goes to show you how hard it is to narrow it down to just 5.

Hootie and the Blowfish - Cracked Rear View
Used to listen to them growing up in the 90's and somehow forgot about them until Pandora radio played a song by them, reminding me why I listened to them so much.

The Allman Brothers Band - Stand Back: The Anthology
What needs to be said here? It's the Allman Brothers. If not Anthology, I would go for Eat a Peach here.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication
I could easily swap with any one of their albums, as I always have a hard time deciding which one I love the most. I'd be happy with any of their albums.

Dave Matthews Band - Under the Table and Dreaming
I simply enjoy this band and the way they sound.

Counting Crows - August and Everything After
I like this band just about as much as Hootie and the Blowfish, and chose this album because it's one that I've listened to the most (although I think their song Colorblind is underrated.)

Honestly, I listen to a very wide variety of music, and could have put albums by bands like Pink Floyd, Nirvana, etc. on there but if I am going to be on a desert island with just 5 albums, I want music that will make me the most comfortable and happy.
