View Full Version : QUESTION: Why haven't the Reskins pursued any DL FA's?

Clearly we need help in rushing the passer. So I ask why hasn't the FO office brought any DE's or DT's in? Does the lack of interest mean...
A) Will show our hand in what player we want to draft (IE we sign DE, then everyone thinks we're after a DT or vice versa)?
B) FO think Golston, Evans or other DL will suffice?
C) Try to get one with trade down?
D) Waiting for June 1 cuts?
E) A little bit of all the above
I just find it curious that we are one of the worst pass rushing team in the NFL and no attempt to even look at a FA. What say you? Thoughts...ideas?

Not much cap space and money tied up in Andre Carter? :whoknows:

Bring in a free agent could be benificial but it will cost us a lot more right now Goldstein is cheap and could be a diamand in the ruff. im thinking you put another good DE up there and teh DT play improves about 70 percent next season.

you probably should have made this a poll....but if it were my guess it's probably cap space and we are probably going after draft prospects....either with our 1 pick or trading down and getting 2 DL

Well, DL in FA this year was very weak. The best guys were franchised. Look around the league and you'll see very few D-linemen being signed. I think Pastabelly said with the Browns signing Robaire Smith, the DL market would start to pick up.

It is pretty obvious when you look at what was available: There just wasn't anyone out there who was worth it. Kerney probably was the most capable, but he's older and coming off of an injury plagued season. Everyone else was either resigned before FA, or are RFA or franchised.
Also, we have a lot of money invested in the guys we have, not to mention that it is a pretty deep draft for DL.

Im going with B. I think they are in a wait and see mode with them. But i think also that they are going to get a DL in the lower rounds of the draft.

I don't think the front office is free agent crazy anymore.
Believe it or not, I think the team is shifting to a draft first approach...

You'll never find a lot of quality D-lineman in the free agent market. Teams always make it a top priority to keep them. The ones that are available will come with a lot of question marks (character, age, injury, etc...). So, it is better to build your line through the draft. That is probably the way the Skins are thinking this year.

We will never be a draft first approach, esp with FA BEFORE the draft.
But I think were learning to be a little bit more balanced instead of FA only.
But to answer your question, can you name any good FAs that can actually HELP us on our d-line instead of coming in at a high contract but produce the same with what we got? I think having Daniels and Wynn gives us security. Are they great pass rushers, no, but with Carter turning it on at the end of the year and Wynn and Evans backing up both spots, it gives us lotsssss of options heading into the draft. We can take Adams or Anderson, or trade down and get Carriker as well as some help at other places.

they probably are going to draft anderson or carriker in the first and maybe get a DT later in the draft....but who know none of us work for the skins so all we can do is speculate untill they actually do something.

I think you can say that about any team in the NFL.

My guess is that they've decided to address the problem via the draft. Which is fine by me because the team needs to rebuild with youth upfront.

Agreed, but some teams don't even use FA. Look at the 6 teams who have yet to sign one.
I think a balance is the best way. Keep all your draft picks, but pick up one or two FAs that will help your team.

I would say that on the DE front, depending on contract:
Kerney, Wistrom, Dewayne White, James Hall (was had for minor trade), Darrion Scott
I would say that on the DT front, depending on contract:
Kevin Carter, Tommy Kelly, Ron Edwards, Ian Scott, Robaire Smith, Alvin McKinney
Basically, plenty of guys that are better than what we currently have or at minimum could help. Granted, some of these guys priced themselves out and would not be worthy to sign for that amount. My whole point is why not at least look at some and see before? Again, we had one of the worst pass rushing defenses in the league, so why not try to get some help?
I'm not saying go and trade for premire DL, so please don't misunderstand. Just wondered what people thought about our inactivity on the front. Didn't want to do a poll just wanted some people to throw in their $.02.
Thanks!

Yes, but those 6 teams change every year, dependant on how much cap room they have and what their needs are.
As long as FA is before the draft, FA will drive who teams draft.

1. The depth of FA DL is extremely weak
2. They are content with Mongomery and Golston being backups
3. They will draft a DL (hopefully a large DT) in the 1st round.

Maybe Branch is why.He would be a great young run stuffer who would eat up 2 blockers and let our LBs make plays.

I think the team is satisfied with their defensive line, for the most part. Would we like a better pass rush...obviously. Carter started to play well toward the end and Daniels was fighting, I think it was ankle injuries last year. Griffin is great when healthy and Salavea is servicable. With the hopeful emergence of Golston, I hope we go with a DE in the draft to get younger with Daniels age. If we trade down, we may be able to get an Okoye, for the next 10 years, and another pass rusher on the outside. Who knows but there are alot of good scenarios. The thing I like the most is we may have learned from the past.

Perhaps the Redskins are happy with their D-line?
Think about it. Carter was getting into his own and starting to do serious damage near the end. Phillip Daniels is getting older, but he still has some left in the tank. Demetric Evans has shown that he has POTENTIAL to be a starter.
Golston was a fantastic for a rookie. Imagine a whole off-season to work on knowing he can start. Griff, when healthy, is arugably one of the best DT's in the game. Montgomery has some potential and is a solid backup/work in progress.
Maybe we are planning on drafting a WR name CJ?

I want to draft Branch. If the Skins don't think he merits the #6 pick and they prefer a DE (our greatest need), then I would try to sign Ian Scott, UFA, of the Bears right now. He would add some depth to the DT position.

Call me stupid....but i feel like Golston could be a very good player. Hes strong and very tough guy... I think he will just benefit with NFL experience.

I would have to agree with this as the reason. - We'll be drafting DL.

I believe it's a combination of things. With all the injurys we had last year on D they seem to be taking a more cautious aproch. With the singing of Fletch and Smoot and the high draft pick ,perhaps they believe when healthy with these few players that will be enough to return our D back to the top 10.

why pay more for an old car when you can get a new one cheaper? :)
this is the year to draft DL. best draft for DL since the year Henderson, Stroud, and that group came out and we missed on getting one of 'em.............

With all the restructuring, we're 15 mil or so under the cap, so that's obviously not the reson.

I wish all the Carriker talk would cease. That dude is not worth a first round draft pick, or a second for that matter.
