Today marks losing my Ebay virginity (late to the party...I know)

So, it's a signed baseball of Ed Kranepool. Ed is a Mets legend and me being a big Mets fan, it sort of feels like my birthday.

Ed was with the Mets his whole carreer (from the ages of 17 to 34..17 years) and never played for another team. He was part of the "Loveable Losers" of 1964 and the "Miracle Mets" of '69. Hugely popular, and entered in the Mets HOF, he wasn't really good enough to reach Cooperstown.

I paid a total of £3.59 for the ball and £3.50 for delivery. Which in total is about 15 US Dollars. I've seen an exact same ball being sold for 89 US Dollars (minus shipping on a website)...so if anything an investement. Though I'll never sell it!

Now to find a display case for it...

As a seasoned eBayer, let me say this: Beware of fraud.

Otherwise, congrats!

Thanks Mark...I emailed the guy about the ball cos I was suspicious. He said he went to New York and casually took in a baseball game which happened to be a Mets game and outside was Ed signing balls and giving them away (he was also selling a Mets cap he said he bought at the same time). So I researched it a bit and it appears Ed is known for hanging around Shea signing stuff for fans. Also, I compared the signature to other balls:

My ball:

Another Ed signed ball:

And this ball was retailing for 89 dollars (I'm sure you'll agree the signature on mine is even better):

I'll admit, when I read the title, it wouldn't have surprised me if you had bought a worn pair of panties on ebay.

No, I wouldn't buy worn panties on Ebay. I only ever buy them here:

I wonder what they do in "gross" sales per year.

Don't know...but I do know this thread was great publicity for them. They had 41 hits now they have 62.

edit: I'm going to send them an email to ask them if they'll do a discount for ES members

Congrats Blighty,

not to rain on your joy, but as another poster mentioned fraud is a big concern with memorabilia. Most things need authenticating today and any autographed ball needs to be on an official MLB baseball for true value.

But I think its cool you follow the Mets so loyaly, thats a great piece.

Does the MLB logo on the ball mean it's an official MLB baseball or do you mean it has to be a game ball from an actual game? Because this is the ball (I doubt it's a game played ball):

Personally I think the chances of this not being geniune are very slim. For one thing, why would anyone choose Ed Kranepool, in Britain...seems odd. If I wanted to sell a forgery of a Mets signing I would probably choose someone like Reyes, Wright or Beltran... Also, the fact the seller has only sold 14 items since 2004 and seems just to sell personal stuff. And the autograph looked pretty original and hard to fake..

Anyway, hope it's original...I once won a competition in an F1 website and the prize was a signed Michael Schumacher photo...I was well pleased. A year later I took it down from my wall to put it in a better frame and I found out it was a copy...so I tore it up. :D
