Lets remember some of the lil names that have blown us away over the years !!
Who are some you remember and loved??
Nick Giaquinto
Charlie Brown
Virgil Seay
The entire no name HOGS
Sellars
Cooley
Mark Murphy
Mike Nelms
If some of these were huge draft picks or from other teams...You may remind me...but... I remember them as in-house products.
WHo else is/was there??
My point...Good scouting and great coaching are the ingreidients to a SB !!

Like the aforementioned Brown, Seay, Hogs, Murphy and Nelms, good scouting and great coaching for the burgundy and gold has become a thing of the past.

GENERALLY speaking, you are right. as a whole though, its difficult to make this as a blanket statement when you have third rounders like Chris Cooley and Ladell Betts playing, and playing well.

Seems to me that memories are a little bit short here. There have been a number of key Redskins that started with other teams. Off the top of my head I can think of:
- Sonny Jurgenson
- Ken Houston
- Dave Butz
- Pat Fisher
- John Riggins
- Joe Thiesman
- Wilbur Marshall
- Henry Ellard
- Bobby Mitchell
Furthermore, it is unrealistic in today's NFL becasue of the salary cap & free agency to only grow your own.

Sam Huff
Eddie Brown
Jack Pardee
Joe Washington (although we lost Mike Thomas on that one)
Ernest Byner
Lamar Parish
Gerald Riggs
George Rogers
Gary Clark and Kelvin Bryant (WFL)
Mike Curtis

Pittsburgh does and a few teams only take minimal free agents

All three of these guys were regarded as among the very best at their respective positions at one point or another. All were multiple time Pro Bowlers.

Danny Copeland and Brad Edwards were a couple of no names at safety that help win a super bowl. Martin Mayhew was another over achiever who left it all on the field.

Well, I get your point, and others have added many names of both great home grown Redskins and great Redskins acquired in other ways. I would also add, in regards to our present situation in Washington, that free agent acquistions Santana Moss and Clinton Portis both hold franchise records.

I am pretty sure we drafted Monte... (just checked and the Redskins did draft him in the 11th round...)

Yes, but not as a featured player IIRC. The OP didn't limit this discussion to FA's, just to relatively minor players who performed very well over time for us.
