View Full Version : Different take on possible Briggs trade

I'm a big fan of the site who doesn't usually post, but thought I'd share one possible take on the Briggs trade speculation that I don't think I've seen here yet.
Is it possible the Skins want to acquire Briggs to include as part of a deal to get the #2 pick from the Lions? This would fit with the latest discussions of Coach Gibbs saying we might move up in the draft, the large Redskins contingent at Calvin Johnson's pro day, the fact that linebacker does not outwardly appear to be a pressing team need, and the fact that the Lions actually play the Tampa 2 defense (the defense in which Briggs apparently thrives). The Skins would probably have to sweeten the deal for the Lions (maybe throw in Springs? Another pick from 2008?). But the real point here could be that the Skins want Johnson, not Briggs.
No inside information, just pure day dreaming at work.

prolly not, cause the trade would be contigent on us giving briggs a new contract...and once we do give him that 20MM to sign, there is now way to trade him

For 6 posts in three years, I do like the day-dreaming aspect of your thread. :applause:
No slam from me, but couldn't the Lions do this without the Skins? I think it would take Briggs, the #31 pick this year and next year's first round. Now the Lions may think our next years will be higher than Chicago, but Chicago could also add one of their second rounders from this year.
If I was the Lions, I would deal with the Bears directly.

Actually in Briggs rookie year under Jaruon he did pretty well if memory serves me and they played a 4-3 two gap.

An odd idea, to say the least.

That's a possibility. Even if it's not to the Lions. But what if Briggs doesn't agree to the trade unless it's for that $20 mil signing bonus. That would be the craziest cap hit ever if we immediately traded him. Better to trade him with the franchise tag on him if we could pull that off.

If this had a chance, either the Lions would deal directly with the Bears (As said already) or maybe have a 3 team trade. I couldn't see us moving up in the draft anyway, just doesn't seem logical.

No inside information, just pure day dreaming at work.Your assessment merits a reply, Briggs would constitute a tremendous acquisition and if he could be used as "bait" to include in a package to move up to get Calvin Johnson would be great however, I feel like we would be abandoning our basic need. If we stay at the 6th overall pick we're in good position to "nab" Jamaal Anderson, a needed DE, if we trade down we may acquire a second rounder and pick up a quality OL and also a talented big receiver.Calvin Johnson will come off the board very early. !

But the Lions probably don't want to drop all the way down to #31 if they did a direct deal w/ Chicago, as they have other pressing needs. We don't have anything to trade up with besides future picks. So by aquiring Briggs (who is valued as a #16 pick, according to the trade rumors) we could move up to #2, and the Lions stay in good position at #6.
Draft Value:
Lions #2 - 2600
Redskins #6 - 1600
Briggs (#16) - 1000
That's as even-steven as it gets.

To tell you the truth i thought about this. The only thing thats wrong with it is like someone already said in here.He wants a new contract and thats going to be part of the trade. So that would make him hard to trade unless we already had something lined up.

So how do we keep our 6th pick and still get Briggs?

Well the #16 and #31 together is only 1600. So like the original poster stated we would have to package other picks or players.

Another reason why a direct Detroit-Chicago deal might not be on the table is because 1) Chicago probably wouldn't trade Briggs directly to a divisional opponent, and Detroit knows this and 2) Chicago doesn't seem to want to pay money to a very high draft pick. In other words, they might not want the #2 pick.

Good point i also have a feeling that the skins want Calvin Johnson, i don't think the Lions would want to trade with Bears, that they play each other twice a year. The Lions would have to get Bly back, and draft corners and safies to match up with Johnson. If the Skins want Johnson i think they would have to make a deal with Oakland, but being at #1 Russell would temp them.Decisions,Decisions

Intersting speculation, but our defensive needs are so great and our drafting resources are so weak that I cannot believe we would go after CJ. It would be the biggest, most boneheaded stumble by our FO to date.
But you could be right.
