Saw this on ESPN:

Bears want more for Briggs
<Mar. 29> Bears general manager Jerry Angelo returned to Chicago from the league's annual meeting Wednesday night and is believed to be preparing a counteroffer to the Redskins' trade proposal for Briggs, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

The Redskins are proposing a swap of first-round draft picks that would move the Bears from No. 31 to No. 6, but Chicago is thought to want a better package in exchange for a Pro Bowl linebacker.

Boy oh boy. As if they're not already getting a hell of a deal they want more!! It's happened in the past so why not this time? We're enamored with a guy that doesn't even want to play for his current team and is threatening to sit out! Where's our leverage?? Watch us oblige to what they want. It has happened in the past with many of the guys we've gone after. Unforutnately Snyder's history dictates how other teams will now approach us.

Simple...our past history says they'll get it. We throw away draft picks like no one's business. Why not try to get more from us.

On a general level, teams just think we overpay in trades (no idea where they got that impression), so they think we'll do it again. Pretty much every GM worth his salary is going to refuse the first offer and at least ASK for more anyway.

In that case, my feeling is more that the Bears just really don't want to deal him, and also they don't want to pay the #6 the money he would command. I just think it has more to do with that than figuring the Skins will screw themselves. Though, if we are willing to do that, they might as well take advantage.

I fear that we will give in just because the FO wants this guy so badly. And of course, we might as well assume the normal position for the Redskins in trades (with the exception of Coles for Moss) - we are gonna get it bad.

I still believe this is nothing more than smoke and mirrors and was done as a favor by the Skins for Drew to get Briggs back in the media and get other teams talking.

What more could the Bears possibly even ask for though? Another player on our team or *gasp* future draft picks? I'm thinking the latter, again due to our past history in trades!!

Why would any GM in their right mind take a teams first offer? It is called negotiation? And yes with Snyder's history anyone would be a fool not to try and milk more out of him.

Possibly. Or they could just ask for Rocky as a "throw in".

My guess (and it's only that) is they don't want the #6 and will ask for a completely different deal. Maybe next year's 1, this year's 5 and 6, and a couple of young players. Don't be surprised if Cooley's name comes up at some point.

Every team knows that once we become obsessed with a player we will overcompensate for that player. We did that in the Bailey deal. We also gave two draft picks for Lloyd when he was going to be released and a 3rd round pick for Brunell when he was going to be released.

We should be having all the leverage in the Briggs deal as he won't play for them if they don't trade him but it is Chicago who is playing hard ball. Unbelievable and won't be surprised if we cave in and throw in next year's draft pick.

Our FO is a joke!

Don't disagree with the general tone of your post (though I wouldn't put it so strongly, I guess). But Lloyd wasn't going to be released. He was tendered at a 1st round level of compensation.

I guess just being such a big fan I feel really on edge or uneasy due to what we've done in the past and am really afraid to see what we may give up to go after this guy in overcompensation. :( I really am scared.

Because our track record is not that good. If we want something bad enough we will do anything to get it no matter what the results will be. Until we start making smart choices we will always be looked at like idiots...

Obviously, you never accept the first offer.

And it's also pretty evident that the Skins will overpay in trades for players they want. So teams take advantage of that.

Our first offer was too lean. All negotiaions (sp) no matter what the situation, goes offer, counteroffer ect ect. Why we offered such a low deal to start with is beyone me

Such a low deal? Are you serious? Remember, this guy does not want to be in Chicago. It has been stated many times. He'll either sit out, and the Bears get nothing from him. Or they'll trade him and get some compensation. The 'Skins should have all the leverage here. Also, this does not fill a position of particular need for the Skins. Why offer the farm (other than the fact that they have historically done so) for a guy you don't NEED, but would be a luxury?

It's only logical they give a counteroffer.

When you negotiate a price for a car, the dealer can only deal down within a certain price margin. After that it's the manager's call on what to do. So basically you're paying too high of a price if that dealer doesn't talk to the manager at least twice.

The entire league views Snyder/Vinny as fools as well as suckers. That is our history overpaying washed up has beens, trading away draft picks, we are the laughing stock of the league.

Considering the franchise tag demands 2 firsts, and SF and Seattle are also in the mix, why must it be they think we're chumps?
what if San fran or the Seahawks make a similar offer and the Bears want more, is that because they think the 9ers are chumps, or that they want more for Briggs based on their due for the tag?
Not everything is a slap, y'know.

Considering the franchise tag demands 2 firsts, and SF and Seattle are also in the mix, why must it be they think we're chumps?

Because if we had to have another LB we could have just offered Thomas more than NE did and not given away ****.

But thats the way the Redskins do things every year and end up short on picks the next year while NE has signed a ton of players, who were all FA's and they will still have all their picks and some from other teams as well.

It's smart vs. stupid. Year in and year out.

Not saying they will do the Briggs trade, just saying that is the way a lot of us will look at it later if we don't win the SB.

Look back a few years. We gave up a 2nd and Bailey for Portis. Sure Portis is a great player but wouldn't Dillon fit the offense better and he would have cost nothing. Then we could have traded Bailey for another need, like a DE or DT, or even someone like Drew Brees instead. People talk about the 3 year plan, well Dillon would be gone by now anyway and we could sign the next guy but we'd have spent nothing but cash to get him for 3 years. We throw down a lot of draft picks for 3 year players, some don't even last more than a year.

Some look at the Coles for Moss deal as a good deal while forgetting the fact that the cap hit for Coles cost us Pierce and Smoot that year. And every year there are several good WR's available in FA, we just had to make the trade. Not that Moss isn't a great receiver, just that it wasn't really a good deal overall.

Trades like these that we make every single year end up putting us at a disadvantage with teams that keep all their picks and usually get a couple extra from other teams or comp picks from the league.

Then to top it all off, at the last minute they decide they don't really undervalue having some draft picks after all so they trade away other future higher picks for picks that they can use right away. That would be fine if we are looking at the difference between 10-6 and 13-3 but that isn't the case.

AMEN! If history is any indication by this time next week we will be seeing Briggs holding up his #55 in Redskins Colors.

Remember..... NOTHING has happened yet. Please wait for our FO to make a boneheaded move and then destroy them for it. Just the fact that this is being considered PUBLICLY shows Rocky that they have no confidence in him, same with can be said for Lemar. Its a shame we leave our guys out to dry. You think Rocky likes waking up everyday and having all his friends ask him why the redskins are looking to trade for an OLB?

Off-season is the business side of football. Teams are looking for players, players are looking for the dollar and “better situations”.

Ours guys have contracts and are still on the team. When, where and if they play is determined by competition.

If Rocky or anyone else is intimidated by competition or otherwise feels “dissed”, then they should use their educations for something other than football.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

:sucks:

The only purpose of this thread is to lob a softball at all the front office bashers. I'm not swinging. The Bears are going to ask for a better offer to see if they can get it. Not because they think Cerrato and Snyder are idiots. Not because they expect to pull a king's ransom from the biggest sucker team in the League. Because that is how negotiations work. The Bears know that the Redskins are interested in Briggs, and now they want to see how interested. That is all.

Just remember our so called patsy FO has already come to contract terms with a 2 time Pro Bowl LB that if they don't get a deal they like now they can wait a year and they have already negotiated without the worry of tampering charges. Call me a homer but that seems pretty savy to me.
