The Cowboys signed third WR Patrick Crayton to a one-year deal worth $1.6 million and now hope to work out a long-term deal with the receiver before the end of the season. The Cowboys really like Crayton because he has the best hands on the team and isn't afraid to go across the middle and make a catch in traffic. He is a good blocker, which means the Cowboys can still run the ball even when they have a three-receiver package because he will block a linebacker or will crack back on a defensive end. He's a solid punt returner who almost always catches the ball cleanly, even though he doesn't give the Cowboys a lot of big-play potential. . . .
The Cowboys want LB Bradie James to become more of a force on first and second downs, so they're probably going to replace him on their nickel package this season in hopes that he can focus on stopping the run on first and second downs. The team thinks he struggled in pass defense in the second half of the season, in part, because he was a three-down player. . . .
WR Terrell Owens, who's not expected to catch passes until July because of surgery to repair a torn tendon in his right ring finger, has returned to Dallas and will participate as much as possible in the offseason program. The Cowboys hope he will use the time to learn the offense new coordinator Jason Garrett is implementing.
