By all accounts, the recovery of WR Amani Toomer from a torn ACL is going very well and there is a possibility he could be ready for training camp. Still, his return to form has to be labeled an uncertainty until he actually steps on the field. That adds importance to the development of Sinorice Moss, who suffered through an injury-plagued rookie season. Moss is most likely to step into a starting role if Toomer isn't ready, especially now that Tim Carter has been traded to Cleveland. Moss and Toomer are vastly different, though. Toomer is a big receiver with good hands, good field awareness and has always been more of a straight-ahead runner. Moss is small, shifty and figures to get most of his passes underneath. That's why the Giants are likely to draft a big receiver on the first day of the draft -- someone who can eventually take Toomer's place. . . .
With TE Visanthe Shiancoe gone, the Giants are without a viable second tight end on the roster. That will eventually change. Their hope is to add a blocking tight end who can free up Jeremy Shockey from those duties as much as possible. Another reason why they were searching for a new fullback is because Shockey was often sent in motion to block up the middle and fill that role. Shockey is never happy when he's on blocking duties, and the Giants would prefer to spring him to run routes as often as possible. Last year they often used an offensive lineman as a second tight end, but that detracts from the offense's versatility because the lineman wasn't a viable receiver. Expect them to add a tight end late in the draft if they can't find a veteran to fill that role before then.
