Briggs not a volunteer in program
Starting today and moving through the next few weeks, the Bears will begin to find out if anyone other than Lance Briggs has a beef with his contract status.
The Bears' voluntary offseason program begins today at Halas Hall, and one player certain not to be on hand is Briggs. The Pro Bowl linebacker is seeking a new home, upset that the club placed the franchise tag on him. But a proposed trade with the Washington Redskins, in which the teams would have swapped first-round picks, is dead, and no other interested parties have come forward.
Briggs boycotted the majority of the offseason program last year, along with running back Thomas Jones. Jones had his wish granted, getting dealt to the New York Jets last month as the Bears improved their position in the second round of the draft. They were not willing to swap picks in losing Briggs to Washington.
Cornerback Nathan Vasher also had a brief absence from the offseason program last year until a meeting with general manager Jerry Angelo got things back on track. Vasher is entering the final year of his contract, as is fellow cornerback Charles Tillman. Typically, the Bears have had strong attendance during coach Lovie Smith's three seasons.
