View Full Version : I enjoy watching Tiger Woods lose Majors

I enjoy watching Tiger Woods lose Majors almost as much as I enjoy watching the Cowboys lose.

Yes, he is will go down as the greatest golfer of all time when all is said a done and I an not disputing that, I just like watch the guy lose in Majors. Tigermanaia is shoved down our throats, even when he is not in the Top 10 Sports Center still gives updates on him. I have never been a fan of the “Trendy Athletes”

Last weekend at the Masters was great seeing an unknown beat the Tiger at the Masters.

Maybe it is because the guy has been known to be a jerk in real life but people still adore him. I remember a couple of years ago I posted something on how Tiger left a tournament during a rain delay when he knew he was not going to win and people jumped me for that thread like I had based Art Monk, Darrell Green or some Redskin Great, will I will probably get jumped for this thread…..

Yes, you will get jumped. You are obviously a racist.  Someday, godwilling, all whites, blacks, and CaBlInAsians will all be able to stand hand in hand.

Edit: For the record, I've always felt that sarcasm was more effective if you didn't immediately let the other person know that you're using sarcasm.

Anyways, I think the race comment was a joke, or maybe grhq is just trying to make this thread fit in with the rest of the Tailgate.

Personally, I was never a big golf fan before Tiger, so I am a prototypical bandwagon Tiger fan. I suppose that your irrational hatred is every bit as justified as my irrational fandom. :silly:

I refuse to let the media decide,(directly or indirectly), for me who I enjoy watch play any sport, vote for, go to the movies to see, ect. In this case, it's indirectly. Yes, Tiger is a big name player, (like many others in other sports), who gets a large amount of attention on air time. So what? I'll be damned if I'm going to not watch him play or root against him because of that. Because of spite. In this case, I've been a fan of Golf for most of my life. My dad and I used to watch tournaments together when I was a kid and I still enjoy watching it to this day. I can remember watching Jack and Lee Trevino in a great playoff. Trevino ended up winning it and though I was a Jack fan and disappointed, I loved the drama of that one, (keeping in mind that the Golden Bear was "shoved down peoples throats" at the time as well). Tiger is a magnificent golfer. Watching him mature over the years into the golfer he is now has been a fun to me. I'm a fan of his because of his play on the course and could care less about some of the other stuff.

I like to play golf. Very much so in fact. I can not stand to WATCH golf. And i get pissed off when golf takes up valuable seconds on sportscenter or xxxESPNradio. God himself could join the PGA tour, and i would be like "Really, there is a God?" And my friends would be like "YEAH! Turn on the US Open and look!" and i would be like "Um.........no."

To me, Tiger winning and losing is like a tree falling in the forest. It has absolutely no effect on me either way.

I don't know how much of a golf fan you are in general, fuj, but to me, Tiger Woods has a little bit of Jeff Gordon syndrome working against him.

The reason EVERY NASCAR fan (who is not a Jeff Gordon fan) HATES Jeff Gordon, is because for the first six or seven years he was in the series, he was untouchable. Needless to say, the fans of the other 42 drivers in the field didn't take too kindly to the same guy always kicking their drivers ***.

I think Tiger hits some people the same way. He's just soooo damn good, that if you follow another golfer religiously, you could learn not to like the kid pretty fast. For no other reason than he's such an amazing player.

All that being said, I think the reason Tigermania has been so successful, is that most people in the U.S. don't have a real passion for watching golf. A lot of us like to go out and hack, but we're not tuning in for the Buick Open like we would the Skins games or even a baseball game.

Anyway, being one of those people that casually followed golf, and was really pulled in by Tiger, I love the kid. I'm just amazed by what he can do when he's on. IMO, he's become more dominant than Michael Jordan was in his heyday, and I never thought I'd say that about anyone.

I have to agree with fuji. But, I watched every one of his U.S. Amateur title wins. I watched him turn pro. I watched the golf analysts drool over him...for good measure. He is one of the best of all time, and most likely will be THE best when all is said and done. However, I enjoyed PGA Golf before Tiger got there, and there are other professional golfers out there. Case in point . . . Tiger's shot on 17 at Augusta. He hits it into the greenside bunker. One analyst said Tiger must "be under the weather". And having watched a lot of golf, I notice when Tiger hits a certain shot that another golfer pulls off as well . . . Tiger's shot was UNBELIEVABLE! The other golfer hit a really good shot. I see and hear it all the time.

Think of it this way. Just be glad that the world's best golfer is an American.

How bad would it suck if Tiger was French, and all of Jack Nicklaus's records were being shattered by a Frenchman?

While I rarely root for the favorite, this fact alone will prevent me from ever taking pleasure in Tiger failing. :)

I understand why you would like to see him lose because he is kinda like a Cowboy since he gets all the limelight and such. However its pretty obvious that TIger Woods exponentially increases the fan base of golf considering its basically a white mans sport for the most part (just look at that ridiculous club that holds teh masters). Golf has grown pretty rapidly because of this and therefore they continue to show Tiger. Hell is donald ?breasher? was the best hockey player in teh NHL we would be hearing about him CONSTANTLY. There would also be a huge boost in NHL advertsing and many fans of hockey would learn to hate him as well.

He's not the great person he's made out to be, for sure. For the life of me, I can't understand why the keep micing this guy every week. All you ever hear from him is him dropping numerous F-bombs all over the place. The networks ought to have enough sense to know that adults aren't the only ones watching tournaments like the Masters. Kids shouldn't be subjected to hearing his foul mouth on tv like that.

Actually, Jeff Gordon didn't dominate in Nascar his first year. And a lot of the hatred towards him back then was how he came into the sport. A lot of fans didn't like the fact that he was basically handed a top-notch ride without ever having to earn it like a lot of the other big name drivers in the sport. He bascially spent no time in the Busch series. It's sort of like Jimmie Johnson of today. Same thing. He spent little time at all in the Busch series and then was given a top ride in Nascar's highest division.

How about some real reasons why "he's not the great person he's made out to be"? It's just too easy to say these things without concrete examples.

And please, spare me the occasional cursing and kids being subjected to it. Have you ever been to a PG-13 movie?

Uh, way to overlook his foul mouth. Yeah, you're right. I guess dropping F-bombs constantly during your round is ok. Because we all know kids aren't paying attention, anyway. Further, the guy acts like the biggest wuss when he's on the tee and hears something click. Always has to have some excuse in case he hits one in the trees. He's the only guy I ever see have a complete breakdown over someone's cellphone beeping or taking a pic.

That would be a vaild point, except that he has to hear a lot more "clicks" than any other player on tour and the fact that if he keeps having "breakdowns" he wouldnt win with the regularity that he does.

Also, re: Tiger cussing. Im not going to hold that against him, i swear all the time. **** ****ity **** **** ****. Especially on the golf course.

I seem to remember Arnold Palmer not being to fond of him in the beginning of his career. I think that was resolved though. I, like many, just want the underdog to win sometimes.

What I couldn't stand, and I don't think its his fault, was all of the hype over his race that was and is still there. Who cares what color he is? Doesn't matter to me, he's just a great golfer.

I'm sorry. I took your response to this thread as an indicator that you actually watch golf on tv regularly. Your definition of constantly must just be different than mine. Does it happen? Yep. Constantly? More like occasionally.

As far as the camera thing goes; apparently you have never watched Phil (when he was good) or Sergio, or any number of other players. Problem is, everyone of their shots aren't shown on live tv unless they are in contention on Sunday.

And a non-credentialed person taking photos during a golfers swing during tournament play deserves to be beaten down with a 460cc driver on the spot. There are signs at every entrance that cameras are not allowed.

(PS- That wuss would probably wipe the court with your in bball.)

Because I want a color-blind world? Is that too much to ask? :)So in a color-blind world we will not be allowed to talk about race at all?

...I think that is too much to ask. Talking about race is not the problem. What's important is that people aren't judged by their race. Being Black/Asian shouldn't make Tiger a better or worse golfer, but if his race has affected his life in some ways, there's no reason we shouldn't be allowed to talk about it.

Should it be wrong to say that someone has blue eyes? blonde hair? Like race, these are all physical attributes we're perfectly comfortable talking about - the world is already pretty much hair color-blind and eye color-blind as far as judgment goes. That's where we should try to get to with race ... our goal should not be to make any mention of race taboo, although that seems to be where society is going these days...

HOWEVER, Tiger brings in a lot of fans (which is GOOD for the sport) that would otherwise not watch. Nothing i hate more than a bandwagon fan that loves talkin' **** about YOUR team (or golfer, not that i have one or care) and claims a traditionally good team that they have no connection to, ever get to actually watch play, or know a whole lot about.

Experiment. Ask a Duke fan about football recruiting.

No one has "always been" a fan of any team. There is a reason they started rooting for that team. If your reason is "because they win" or "because they were winning when i started getting into that sport" then you are a bandwagon fan. If someone lives in NoVa, did not attend UM, and started watching college football between 1983 and 1992, then they are a bandwagon fan unless they can come up with a REAL reason they like the team.

If your team doesnt have both sports, fine, go pick another one. But if you pick a team because the win, then you jumped on the bandwagon.

I agree - but you said before 'anybody that cheers for two college teams is a frontrunner'. I was just pointing out there are loopholes. My buddy picked up cheering for Temple on his own as they were local - but his older cousin was a Miami fan, so he followed suit. It just so happens they were winning at the time. I would have called his cousin a bandwagoner at the time - but he is still a die hard fan.

Bandwagoners are often the most vocal fans. It takes a lot of heart to cheer on a winner. I'd have liked to talk to your buddy mid-December last year.

I love the, "it just so happens they were winning at the time" bit. My brother is a "die-hard" Duke fan. #1, Duke HAS a football program, older brother couldnt name 2 players. #2, every bandwagon fan has that line they can regurgitate everytime someone questions them. My brothers is something about playing against Grant Hill in high school. Yet, he's not an Orlando Magic fan. #3, MAN was i giving him **** when Duke lost in the first round of the NCAA this year. Couldnt get a rise out of him.

He's 30. So say he started getting very interested in college bball when most people do, in HS, call it 15 or 16 years ago. Oh what a schock! Guess who won the NCAA tourney in 1991 and 1992? Classic bandwagoner. I know the symptoms.

Just a little.

Plus, I'd lay odds that he has never attended a tournament that Tiger has competed in. If he had, he would of seen me there in my greasy t-shirt.

He was supposed to be there for the one I attended, but he dropped out because he had a tournament the week before.....but his fans still showed up for some reason....I think they were following Daly around :whoknows:

I have to give him credit - he cheers them on through and through. Though he was quite ashamed of the whole brawl incident. Believe me, I hear a lot of crap about all the U players on the Skins.

Big John is much more likely to attract the rednecks. He is also more fun to be around. One year as a marshall at the Honda, when he was at the height of his popularity, i was asssigned to him. There was quite a long walk there from the 8th green to the 9th tee. We walked together, the caddies took carts, and shot the **** the whole way. He gave a fan one of his Reds when asked and lit it for him. John is just a normal, everday, down-to-earth joe who can smack the hell out of a golf ball.

Yeah, but the obvious difference with that is you aren't an idol for so many kids out there like Tiger. I actually don't blame him as much as I do the idiots like CBS for micing him. They should share blame as well.

Tiger beat me in bball? Not a chance of that happening, dude. Trust me, I've seen Tiger shoot a basketball. Guy definitely has no game.

Must be a Phil fan who I might say is a bigger jerk in golf, all the pros have said it :)

I not a big lefty either. Actually I do not have a favorite golfer, just root against Tiger.

Kind of like in the National League, until Nationals came along I did not have a favorite NL Team. I just use to root for whoever was playing the Atlanta Braves. :silly:
