Send hatemail to Sharpton and the other dishonest brokers seeking to use every possible situation of this type to increase their own influence.

Yep.

How about instead of sending hate mail like cowards, you get up off your ass and do something useful about whatever it is that you are upset about.

Imus didn't grab any torches or pitchforks. Some fat hypocrit in search of something, anything, to keep him relevant did. These pathetic sacks of crap that don't have the stones to take on BET for promoting things thousands of times worse then Imus leaped at the chance to nail him to the wall for their own gain.

What he said was bad... but it wasn't this bad. This has turned into a circus with this idiot Sharpton now demanding to discuss what can't be said over public radio.

But the team has gotten hundreds of emails. Two or three have been hate mail. So let's not turn this into the latest Act of the circus that's been going on.

LOL. Sharpton made Imus talk right? Silly argument. This is the type of mind set that had blacks as slaves, ignore the terrible actions on innocent people and focus on something one black man you dislike did.

A black man kills someone. Forget what this white man did. Look at this.:applause:

True, Sharpton really is a nothing. If this was say, Howard Stern, think he'd have the stones to do something about it? Howard says worse **** on almost a daily basis, but because so-called "black-rights champions" (and I'm being sarcastic when I use this term towards Sharpton" know he has too much support, they're afraid to challenge him. Imus was an easy target. Don't get me wrong, we all know Imus is an idiot, and about as significant as a penny.

That just just sounds stupid. Some blacks do not like him. ANYONE CAN SAY ANYTHING THEY WANT. IT IS FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

There is no little black community. BLACKS ALL OVER AMERICA FROM DIFFERENT CULTURES. Ghana, Nigeria, Americans. There is no such thing as a black leader.

So George Bush goes to war and has people dying every day. Is he doing it for white people? No.

He has the power. It does not mean everyone white person agrees with him.

I could go and talk. No one would care what i say. Sharpton talks and the media covers it. If they did not cover it he would have no power.

He has no weight in anything.

You are right, but the people that were protesting do. Think about it. If you don't want the negative publicity, you are going to do what you have to to shut the protestors up.

I didn't see anything wrong with MSNBC taking him off the TV. But when there is a protest in front of your building, and then you agree to have a meeting with Sharpton, and lo and behold not even an hour later you fire Imus. Well something is not right.

I really hope that the CEO of CBS will do something to clean up his Music label as well. If not, well then he is a hypocrite as well.

This thread shouldn't be about Sharpton and the other arguments.
These young women should not be receiving hate mail. They are completely faultless in all of this mess, and it's a damn shame they have to put up with it. That is simply appalling, but unfortunately not surprising. Hell, I get hate mail myself for my cartoons.
Plenty of whackos out there.

It's good to hear Mrs. Imus say that, it shows some attempt at responsibility, and it seems genuine.

Don Imus' comments didn't get him fired. It got him a two week suspension.

If CBS had really been that offended by Imus' comments, they would've fired him on the spot...but they didn't.
Instead, they waited eight days and basically looked to see what their sponsors thought about it. When they pulled out, they fired Imus.

Imus was fired for losing money, not his comments.

Well, If the black community would tell this guy to stop speaking for them, then perhaps I would agree. But as for now, he does.

Al Sharpton is NOT the voice of the black community. I feel bad for the ladies at Rutgers getting hate mail for a situation that was clearly blown way out of porportion by numerious media outlets etc. They were the butt of a comment that wasn't in the best of taste. Honestly, you can find racial jabs made on most morning drive stations. Back to the hate mail. This (IMO) situation is just giving cowards the opportunity to express their biggotry without showing their faces. Do you really think that most of these people sending hate mail had an agenda before Imus made his comments? This whole situation was made messy, and a lot of people have been exploited all the way around. Let me reiterate, that Sharpton is NOT the voice of the black community. Coming from an african american, Al Sharpton/Jesse Jackson are nothing more than two individuals with their own agendas. I have yet to see an apology from Sharpton regarding some of his comments involving the Duke LAX players. Who is Al Sharpton to be labled the "voice" of the black community? He has done some good and bad things in his life, but his face is shown in situations like these (Shawn Bell etc), you can't help but to wonder what the real motives are in his agenda....

Well, they're in business to make money. That isn't being a weasel, or a money grubber. It's how the world works. If it pays, it plays.
Whether or not Imus' comments had anything to do with his firing or not is a matter of speculation, but the fact is he lost a few major sponsors over it, and that is what is going to get the higher-ups attention.
That is pretty obvious, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Sack of scum is a little harsh. Sure, the guy screwed up, no question. But I know I've said and done worse things in my life, and you probably have too. I'd hate to be judged based on one stupid thing I said.

And just in case you weren't sure, it's not called the "Imus Ranch for Caucasian Kids With Cancer."

Sack of scum is simply too strong for a man (and his wife) who have donated a lot of their time and money to improving terminally-ill kids lives.

You want to criticize his words, go ahead. But do a little more research before crucifying the man.

This week I had the pleasure of traveling for business, and spending time in Los Angeles and Sacramento markets. As I drove to the airport on Tuesday I had listened to 3 radio hosts defend him in the morning drive, and my favorite radio pair (John and Ken on KFI) continued to mount the same defense.

1) What he said wasn't so bad. We hear it on black rap all the time.
2) Why is there a double standard against whites talking about blacks?
3) Sharpton and Jackson have said racist things in the past, they never apologized, they are never fired.
4) Many black people don't think Sharpton and Jackson speak for them.

Over and over again I was bombarded by the same talking points. From LA to Sacramento, Hannity to Ingraham to Cowherd to Armstrong & Getty to John & Ken. It drove me to the point of turning them all off... and then when I turned them on again coming back today, they were re-hashing the same points over and over again.

I'm here to say... you talk show hosts don't speak for this white listener. First of all, it wasn't the fact that Imus used the term "blankety blank blank" (can someone tell me why everyone enjoyed hearing the term over and over again?). It was only half the fact that a white guy said something derogatory to a group of black females. It was all about Imus slandering a group of young, African American girls IN COLLEGE who are examples to their younger peers. Period.

Now, everyone is trying to blow this up into a bigger racial issue, and yes, there are issues and double-standards, but if Imus was talking about girls in a rap video dancing with half their clothes on, and not a specific group of girls, who are role models... I doubt he gets fired.

The other problem was, the conversation didn't being and end with the slur. Imus contrasted the girls from Rutgers with the Tennessee team, calling the Tennesee girls "cute" and then his producer went on to say that the Rutgers girls look more like the Raptors. How is it that this type of speech should be defensible and encouraged to flow over the airwaves?

I think the fact that Imus has gotten into trouble in the past and should've known better, combined with the fact he didn't just use the term to describe girls in a rap video, combined with the fact that young black girls need to see more role models like the Rutgers team, were more than enough justification to fire him.

All the arguments from white talk radio, although some decent points were red herrings in the small scheme of things. Rap videos and Spike Lee movies have nothing to do about it... and if this bleeds into next week I'm going to kill my white talk radio!

I've thought this for a long time, only I'd add how smart she is and I'd lower Imus' designation to semi-scum because even if he constantly uses his charity to feed his ego, it's still a good cause. Although, considering all the Cancer-ranch coincided with Diedre's arrival, maybe I am giving the old slanderer too much credit.

I'm going to accuse you of something, Quixote; being human.

It's easy to get frustrated to the point of near-rage sometimes with the state of our country and our world. But we are truly blessed in these United States with the fact that we can change the things that we don't like; be they people, policies or damn-near anything else.

Only hitch is, to know what's wrong, you have to know what's going on. I frequently find myself wanting to pound the desk in frustration with things that are "so obvious" to me that other people, or even news agencies "don't get." I'm sure I've CAUSED that reaction from some of my friends on this board.

At the same time, I've learned from them, and I'd like to think they've learned a little here and there from me. Staying abreast of the news, and debating with people here has helped me grow intellectually and personally, and all of that will help me when I go to the polls in November '08.

I will commend you for this. If you're aggravated by the Imus controversy being a story incessantly for a week, detracting from other stories, you obviously already know what's really important.

Jaded-Dragon
April-14th-2007, 09:27 AM
Bottom line, the Anna Nicole thing is over, the media needed something else to keep the masses occupied. If the Duke charges were dropped a week earlier that would be the big story in the news and this would of been brushed under the rug. Maybe not completely, but I would not be hearing about for 43 minutes of my 45 minute drive home from work.

I think what Imus said was tasless and deserved some kind of a punishment. However, I think it is just as deplorable, the way that the women of Rutgers are being taken advantage of by everyone from the school, to Sharpton, to Oprah. I'm expecting one of the ladies to get a book deal offer any day now.

Although, I do wonder if ANY of the women at Rutgers have actually heard the comment for themselves? Just curious.

To get back on topic...

Anybody sending hate mail to these women over this situation, has some serious problems. I don't think that getting into college, playing basketball, and saying you are offended constitutes as doing anything wrong.

Riggins77

Imus should have known better than to say something like that on terrestrial radio. Al Sharpton had no business even getting involved and calling for his resignation. Imus was even a bigger idiot by agreeing to go on Sharpton's show.
