The draft approaches more rapidly than most teams would like, and the Giants are no different in that regard.
They would like more time, but that isn't possible. It is also the same complaint teams register every year, since they are well aware of the vagaries of fortune involved in exercising selections in the higher rounds of the annual NFL college player draft.
Needs do not always coincide with available players when a turn comes, and the lower the team is in the round (the Giants are 20th in the first) the more likely it becomes that the position they need and the appropriate player for that position will already have been taken.
"The one thing you want to avoid," said the late general manager, George Young, "is to 'force' a player up into the first round, or any round for that matter. You must take the best available athlete regardless of his position if your need-player is listed too low."
So what do the Giants expect this month? Fortunately (or unfortunately) they have a passel of needs, and to simply pick the "best available athlete" who fills one of those needs will be a simple task.
