I was lookin at buying a new mattress. I always heard you should never skimp on shoes and beds, if you not standing on one you are laying on the other. But I also don't want to throw a grand or 2 away and not like it.
I was looking at the sleep number beds. Anyone have any experience with these? Or any advice from own mattress or experience?

I would be able to justify spending $$$ on a good mattress. when you think of the amount of time spent there, it makes sense.
One stat I haven't been able to get out of my head ... and I'm not sure I believe but still gives me the shudders ... is that the average mattress will double it's weight in 10 years from dust mites. This was quoted in an ad for the memory foam mattresses. Very effective advertising as if I research this and find it true I'll spend the money to get one (closed cells of the foam not being conducive to mites infiltrating.)

Just think, you're sleeping with these things:

Scanning Electron Micrograph of the bed predator mite (Cheyletus sp.), and its prey, the European house dust mite (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus). D. pteronyssinus is a cause of allergies.

Q: Can dust mites get in a Sleep NumberŪ mattress?
A: As with any mattress, dust and dust mites are capable of getting inside a Sleep Number mattress. However, you can unzip the mattress cover of a Sleep Number bed and vacuum the inside of the cover to remove dust mites and other allergens.

After a lot of research, we got a Simmons Beautyrest mattress. Very happy with it. The Tempurpedic mattresses get too hot (and are expensive as heck), while the Serta, Sealy and other midrange mattresses just weren't as comfortable as the Simmons.

Wife and I just bought a Tempurpedic Celebrity bed about three months ago. I love it and cannot hardly sleep on my old Sealy box spring mattress anymore. I do not get hot at all when I sleep. The classic tempurpedic is the one that gets hot but there are many more models above it. I do not regret spending the money one bit. Wife has bad disc in her back and used to never be able to sleep the whole night in our old bed, now she sleeps every night good and no pain in the morning.

High end Tempurpedic is good, but it still gets too hot for me. I think that the Simmons provides equal comfort at a fraction of the price.
The Sealy is terrible, because all the coils are netted together. It doesn't give at your pressure points the way the Tempurpedic does (due to all the memory foam) or the Simmons does (due to the individually wrapped springs and smaller amount of memory foam)

My boyfriend had a sleep number bed. Best bed in the entire world.

Those tempurpedic beds are great if you have back trouble and need the really soft bed, I have back pain too, but I still need something a little firmer then the tempurpedic. Oh and solution to it getting hot, turn down the house temperature, or open the window.

Thats why you go with the sleep number bed ...
You can change the firmness of your mattress everynight!

That doesn't work. You don't get hot all over - you get hot and sweaty where your body meets the bed. I don't like turning over 35 times a night to let my overly warm side air out.

My ex boyfriend had one. I truly loved that bed. There were some nights where I couldn't sleep on a firm bed, so I had the ability to change the firmness. And it's also great because if you prefer a firm mattress, but your partner prefers a soft one, there's no problem.
