The Beta Bridge at UVA near Greek row probably has an inch layer of paint on it from all the painting its gotten from undergrads over the years, particularly from all the Frats there. Sometimes it gets painted more than once an evening! Painting are messages, promotions of parties, etc.

As a Virginia Tech grad I visited friends during a couple of Easters Weeks and remember walking (or stumbling) past the spot many times.

Here's the latest overnight paint job. I have new respect for the Wahoo frat boys for reaching out to Hokie Nation:

Let's use this thread to post examples of school tributes to Tech. . .

THere's more than an inch of paint on that bridge. Hell, if you scrubbed it down with paint thinner, it would probably fall apart:laugh:

Nice tribute though

From Penn State:

"George Thompson isn't asking for much. He just wants Penn Staters to give up their blue and white colors.

But only for the weekend.

Thompson, a Penn State junior, is urging football fans to wear maroon and orange -- the school colors of Virginia Tech -- to the Blue-White scrimmage Saturday at Beaver Stadium.

And he has plenty of company. Thanks to the magic of Facebook, a social-networking Web site, Thompson's idea drew more than 1,700 supporters within hours on Tuesday."

Bonding Over Bloodshed
33 Perish at Virginia Tech in Deadliest U.S. Shooting

Campus

Christina Burton, a sophomore print journalism major at Howard, has yet to contact her cousin—a Virginia Tech student—following the mass murder on the school’s Blacksburg, Va. campus. Burton attempted to call her cousin, Trisha Ford, a 20-year-old undecided sophomore at Virginia Tech three times yesterday. Burton assumes that Ford’s mother has also been attempting to contact her to no avail.

Monday afternoon, approximately fifty faculty, students and staff assembled on the Howard University Yard at 4 p.m. under the gray and rainy sky to reflect and pray for the slain members of the Virginia Tech community. Burton was one of many students who attended the vigil in observance of the tragic shootings. Her cousin’s situation made the vigil a personal, emotionally taxing issue.

On Monday morning, an unidentified man wearing a black leather jacket and a maroon hat walked into West Ambler Johnston Hall on Virginia Tech’s campus, according to ABC7 News. He went on to shoot and kill two people in the building before murdering 30 others, and wounding an additional 15, hours later in classrooms in Norris Hall—a half mile across Virginia Tech’s campus. Virginia Tech has scheduled counseling in the athletic building and a convocation service is set to begin at 2 p.m. in the Castle Coliseum this afternoon.

This incident is being called the worst mass shooting in United States history and preceded the anniversary of the Columbine shootings in Littleton, Colo. by only four days.

Jennifer Owens, HUSA president, offered words of appreciation to the members of the Howard family who were in attendance at the vigil, despite the weather. Owens urged those gathered to remain supportive and said she had been in touch with student body presidents on other campuses who have been very supportive. Additional speakers at yesterday’s vigil included, The Rev. Bernard Richardson, dean of the Andrew Rankin Chapel and President Swygert, who advised students to use the university’s resources to do whatever it takes to vent about the tragedy at Virginia Tech.

Following Swygert’s address, Dean Richardson told students he would have to alter his style of addressing the audience for this occasion. Prior to the benediction, Richardson asked the audience to form small clusters near the flag post in order to pray for the victims and their families.

Michelle Wilson, a junior biology major said, “I feel that our campus is united and right now all we can do is pray. We also need to pray for the family of the killer—they are probably wondering ‘why?’”

Mike Harrison, a sports medicine major said, “This is life and we have to deal with life as it is. We’re not exempt from what will happen in life.”

Harrison continued saying, “This tragedy reminds us that we’re still in the real world. People forget that stuff happens like this.”

Monday’s shootings on the Virginia Tech campus prompted President Swygert to say Howard’s policy of students showing identification as they enter residence halls will be strictly enforced. Swygert stressed the importance of mental health of parents and members of the Howard community both on and off campus.

“I want people to understand that safety is very important,” Swygert said. He added that there would be more campus police and they will be more visible on campus. There will also be an increase in the presence of the Metropolitan Police Department on campus.

Ive Pierce, a freshman psychology major offered her advice concerning unstable students. She said, “You should pay attention to warning signs. When people confide in you—because you never how big or small the problem really is.”

Pierce continued, “What they tell you could only be the surface issue. Watch the way you respond to people-what isn’t a big deal to you may be a big deal to someone else. It could be the thing that breaks the camel’s back.”

Burton said she wanted to be in the presence of like minded individuals during the vigil following the shootings.

“You realize life is a gift, you have one of those epiphanies. Things like that can happen at Howard. It just makes me think that I’m lucky to be alive; to be going to school. It just shows to never take life for granted,” Burton said.

They ring the bell every day at that time, I believe, to commemorate the sinking of the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor.

http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/daily/local/48693.php

USS Arizona bell tolls today for Va Tech victims
The Associated Press
Students, faculty and administrators at Arizona's three state universities have begun observances in support of their peers at Virginia Tech after Monday's massacre that took 33 lives.
Among events held or planned:
On the University of Arizona campus in Tucson, the Gallagher Theater was opened to televise the Virginia Tech convocation and a journal and a card were made available for signing within the theater all day.
A podium and microphone also were provided for anyone wishing to speak.
The journal and card were to be placed at the Student Union information desk for the remainder of the week, then sent to Virginia Tech to be shared with the university's students and staff.
At 12:07 p.m. today, the Student Union Memorial Center will ring the bell from the USS Arizona seven times in memory of the victims of the Virginia Tech tragedy and their families. A moment of silence will be observed on the campus mall at that time.
The University of Arizona also will host a vigil at noon Thursday at the fountains in front of the Old Main building.
Arizona State University students in Tempe will hold a candlelight vigil on the Hayden Lawn at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Plans are in process but not finalized yet at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff for an observance marking the Virginia Tech tragedy.

As a UVA grad, it's great to see fellow Wahoos extend their support to Virginia Tech. I thought the Beta Bridge painting was a nice tribute.

On Monday, I went all over the internet to find whatever info I could find on the shootings. Eventually I found myself looking at social network sites like facebook and myspace. I was taken aback at how quickly people responded with tributes and prayers. It's a shame that it takes a horrible act to help show the best that humanity has to offer.

  To anyone who has made some sort of tribute. Whether it's building a memorial or doing something as simple as wearing a VT cap, your actions will go a long way to help the healing process.

Students Hold Vigil for Va. Tech Victims
Four Student Councils Organize Candlelight Ceremony, Read Names at Sundial
By: David Xia
Posted: 4/19/07
Approximately 300 students, faculty, and administrators gathered together at the sundial last night for a candlelight vigil held in memory of the 32 victims of the Virginia Tech shootings.

University Chaplain Jewelnel Davis delivered a message of inspiration and hope to those gathered at the base of the sundial. Davis said that during this time of national mourning, it was crucial for members of the Columbia community to band together in solidarity and offer their condolences and prayers to those grieving over Virginia Tech.

"Life will always overcome the darkness of hate, despair, and violence," Davis said.

The undergraduate student councils provided 1,500 white candles, according to Ana Ortiz, CC '07 and Columbia College Student Council vice president of campus life, who spoke at the event.

As the candles were lit and the flames passed along in silent respect, those in attendance exchanged glances of support.

"We who believe in learning believe in hope," Davis said. "Light, when it is shared, overcomes darkness and spreads more light."

Only the soft pattering of the drizzling rain was audible as attendees, heads lowered in respect, observed a moment of silence.

Ortiz stated the names of the 32 students who were killed.

"One great thing about the Columbia community is that when a horrible incident like this happens, we are able to come together as a family," Dean of Student Affairs Chris Colombo said after the event.

For Mark Johnson, CC '09 and vice president of the CCSC class of 2009, the shootings in Blacksburg, Va. struck very close to home. Johnson, whose hometown is Virginia Beach, said it was unsettling to see such a tragedy occur at a place he considers home. "I'm happy we had something like this. It allowed me to vent," he said.
