t is difficult to fathom the reality that the Giants are at the moment able to boast of just one offensive left tackle -- and he is left guard David Diehl.
After the surprising release of veteran Luke Petitgout, the Giants indicated that Diehl would simply slide over from his guard position and take over at left tackle.
Not so fast, offensive line coaches. There is a world of difference between the positions, and for starters Diehl doesn't have quick enough feet to play in space and not risk Eli Manning's health.
But general manager Jerry Reese, during a recent press conference, said: "We have won games with that left tackle (he did momentarily forget Diehl's name, or at least it certainly sounded that way). Perhaps he should have said "game," since Diehl played the position twice last season -- the final game of the regular schedule and the first-and-out playoff game.
It is almost guaranteed that either a veteran left tackle or a blue-chip rookie is going to get the chance to make Diehl happy and send him back to guard.
DRAFT STRATEGY -- Reese says that drafting in the 20th position in the first round "is a good spot for us." When someone suggested that the first spot might be a tad better, he disagreed. "No, 32nd would be better.
